#L&SR #WednesdayBloggingchallenge 2.27.19

Those of you who know anything about me know I am a here-and-now kinda girl. I like living in the time I am currently ensconced in and it’s the main reason I write contemporary romance. I, simply put, dig the now.

Today’s prompt for the L&SR Wednesday Blog Challenge is Fictional worlds I’d rather not visit. This one’s a no-brainer for me: Middle Earth. So not the here and now.

I’ll admit this freely and face the wrath of Tolkien fans everywhere. I am not…a fan. Don’t get me wrong. I know he’s an icon, a brilliant writer, a fabulous linguist, and a visionary.

I get that. I really do.

But….

I’ve tried numerous times during my lifetime to read Lord of the Rings and have never been able to get passed the first few pages. I tried reading the Hobbit, too. Same result.

And to further irritate and annoy Historical Fantasy and Sci Fi fans worldwide, I don’t want to visit Westeros either. Sorry, George R.R. Martin minions.

 

I’ve never even seen the popular HBO series.

So, go ahead and hate me if you must. Le sigh.

    Honestly, I can’t blame you for not wanting to visit Middle Earth. There were a lot of dangerous places in it, and some of them didn’t necessarily announce that ahead of time at all.

    And I had the Game of Thrones universe on my list, too, this week.

    Thanks for coming by! I can see both of your choices (even though I love the Tolkien books and am waiting with bated breath for the return of GoT!) Like visiting them vicariously, but would rather live in a Maeve Binchy novel 🙂

    I’ve tried to watch the LOR movies and couldn’t get through 5 minutes. I’ve never watched GoT, either. Just can’t do it. I’m not a middle Earth kind of gal, either. Good post. 🙂

    I read the Hobbit in fourth grade for a book report and loved it, but I’ve never been able to finish the rest of the books. I actually got as far as about half through “Return of the King”, but Tolkien’s writing style is very difficult reading. I did, however, LOVE the LOTR movies. The Hobbit movies were okay, but horribly dragged out and didn’t follow the book well at all. Still, Middle Earth was a pretty scary place, so regardless of whether you read the books or not, it’s a good choice for this post.

    I haven’t read GOT or watched the show. I have absolutely zero desire to, which is surprising, honestly, because I love fantasy. But it sounds SO dark and there is so much death I just can’t get interested.

    I didn’t even think about Westeros. Hmmm. That said, I can’t blame you for not wanting to visit either of those worlds. In Middle-Earth there are all kinds of insane creatures and in Westeros, just a whole bunch of insane people. Hahaha.

    And hey, after all the crap I’ve taken over the years for reading romance novels, I’d NEVER EVER judge you for not reading fantasy (even though I love it myself). 🙂

    You’re not alone when you’re talking about Middle Earth – too dark. I like the movies but I won’t read the books. Same with Harry Potter. I wouldn’t ever want to visit … with HP was the scene with the spiders. That, right there, made me shut off the movie. If it’s in the book, nope, never will read it. And for contemporaries .. ha. ANY world written by Nicholas Sparks I would never ever want to visit. NO HEA! someone you come to care for in the book always DIES! No – Some here and now stories are great…some are to be avoided at all costs.

    Well, I’m a solid LOTR fan, though I can understand that some people just don’t like it. The first time I read The Hobbit as a teen, I didn’t like it at all. I fell in love later when my tastes changed and I started to read lots of fantasy.

    I heartily agree. I couldn’t get through the LOTR books and have never picked up Game of Thrones. I’ve never been into fantasy.
