A #Valentinesday #romcom about #family #chocolate & #food

The book that introduced my beloved San Valentino family to the world – 3 WISHES – is a Valentine favorite. Filled with family angst ( a cheating husband), mistaken identity ( our hero) and a strong, Italian chocolatier ( our heroine) 3 WISHES is a fast, fun, and flirty read and part of the Candy Heart Series from The Wild Rose press.

Do wishes have expiration dates?

Valentine’s Day is chocolatier Chloe San Valentino’s favorite day of the year. Not only is it the busiest day in her candy shop, Caramelle de Chloe, but it’s also her birthday. Chloe’s got a birthday wish list for the perfect man she pulls out every year: he’d fall in love with her in a heartbeat, he’d be someone who cares about people, and he’d have one blue eye and one green eye, just like her. So far, Chloe’s fantasy man hasn’t materialized, despite the matchmaking efforts of her big, close-knit Italian family. But this year for her big 3-0 birthday, she just might get her wish!

At about five minutes of ten, I was almost ready to turn the Closed sign on the door when it opened. I heard Janie’s breath hitch and turned from where I was sweeping up. Staying open late is always a risk, with the thought thieves will invade at the end of the day.

If the guy standing at the door glancing around the shop was a thief, then Dio mio, I wanted to be robbed.

About six foot, his hair was the color of a deer’s pelt, with autumnal golds and browns shot together in a glorious patchwork that grazed the collar of his jacket and curled a little at the ends. He wore a faded brown bomber jacket over a shirt I couldn’t see, but he had shoulders almost as wide as my doorway. A pair of well-worn jeans covered his mile-long legs, and the fabric on the stress points at his knees was practically white.

“We’re about to close,” I heard myself say. “Can I help you?”

It was at that moment he looked over at me.

His face could have been sculpted by Da Vinci or Michelangelo. A broad, smooth, forehead housed naturally arched eyebrows I knew some of my gay guy friends would have paid a fortune to have on their own faces. His cheeks were carved from marble, high, smooth, and deep. And his mouth, mother of God, his mouth. Full, thick beautiful lips sat perfectly over a chin with a dent you could shove a button into and have it stay put.

“Sorry,” he said, those fabulous lips pulling up a little shyly at the corners. “I got stuck at work and couldn’t get here until now. I’ll be quick. Promise.”

So here’s the thing: the guy was gorgeous. But even if he’d looked like a frog with raw antipasto smothering his face, I would have dropped to my knees when he opened his mouth. Warm honey, a shot of raw whiskey, and a little hot puff of smoke wafted from his mouth like a fine and rare brandy being decanted.

A visit with author Jana Richards from Wild Rose Press

I adore my Wild Rose Press sisters, and Jana Richards has been a sister since the beginning of my writing journey with WRP. Today, I’m featuring her and a few of her books in the Victorian Mansion Series. Have a look….

Jana, take it away.

The Story Behind the Victorian Mansion Series

I originally wrote RESCUE ME, book 1 in my Victorian mansion series, many years ago. Like over twenty-five years ago. I submitted the story to Harlequin’s Duets, a line devoted to humorous, light-hearted love stories. Harlequin passed on RESCUE ME, and not long after, a computer crash wiped out the digital copy of the book. The last surviving copy was a printed manuscript that I’d stuffed into a box and pushed into the back of a closet.

Fast forward to 2007. I’d finally sold my first novel to a small publishing company. I’d read that offering a free book at various retailers was a good way of getting attention, but I didn’t have anything to offer. But then I remembered the completed story stuffed into a box at the back of the closet. I dug it out and wondered how I’d turn this pile of paper into an ebook.

Where there’s a will there’s a way. I took my pile of papers to my day job and fed it through a scanner. (Just to be clear, I did this after office hours.) The scanner turned the paper into a PDF, which I emailed to myself and converted into a Word document that I could revise. Because, oh boy, did it need revision. My writing had changed over the years, hopefully for the better.

I also had to come up with cover art. I couldn’t afford a cover artist, so I purchased a piece of vector art for $5 and a friend helped me put the text on it. Using software at Amazon and at Draft to Digital, I put the cover and the manuscript together and magically turned them into an ebook! I offered it free at several retailers.

That low-budget free book served me well for several years. But by 2018 I decided I needed something more. A free book isn’t terribly useful unless it leads to further sales. So I wrote a companion book to RESCUE ME called TAKE A CHANCE ON ME. Both are set in the same, somewhat shabby Victorian mansion in Toronto. This time, I commissioned a really great cover from artist Rae Monet, and it’s one of my favorites, probably because of the pug! I put the cover and buy links in the back of RESCUE ME, hoping to entice readers to buy the new book.

But I’d made a couple of fundamental flaws in my marketing. First of all, I didn’t change the cover of RESCUE ME when the new book released. It still had my homemade cover. Secondly, I wrote TAKE A CHANCE ON ME as a spicy, sexy book while RESCUE ME is a sweet romance. I reasoned that most of my other books were of the spicy variety, so it represented my writing better. Perhaps that was true, but it meant the Victorian Mansion two-book series (or duet) was uneven when it came to heat levels.

So, in 2022 I decided to do something about it. First, I commissioned a new cover for RESCUE ME. It was finally time to get a professional cover and once more Rae Monet came through. Second, and most difficult, I rewrote TAKE A CHANCE ON ME to make it a sweet romance. I found it wasn’t simply a matter of removing the sex scenes. The tone of the book had to change as well. It required a lot of work and took much longer than I’d expected.

But finally, by December of 2022, I was able to relaunch the Victorian Mansion duet with a new cover for RESCUE ME and a rewrite of TAKE A CHANCE ON ME. Both are now available on Kindle Unlimited. It’s been a long time coming!

Chelsea Andrews can’t decide who’s more dangerous—the creep on the Toronto city bus, or the handsome stranger who rescues her. Was he acting as he claimed, or is he that weird in real life? She doesn’t stick around to find out. Fate intervenes when her rescuer, out-of-work actor Matt Malone, sublets the apartment next door. Chelsea soon discovers the most dangerous thing about her charming new neighbor is the damage he’s inflicting on her heart.

Or is it? Soon after Matt moves in, strange romantic notes begin showing up at the art gallery where Chelsea works. Then she’s followed home from the bus stop late one night, and her apartment is broken into. Despite her growing feelings for Matt, all the evidence points to him as the culprit.

Matt is at a crossroads. His acting career is stalled, and all his siblings are getting married and having babies while his love life is non-existent. Something has to change. Things begin to look up for Matt when he moves next door to Chelsea. He’s totally captivated by the beautiful blonde and wants to take their relationship to the next level. But when he discovers what Chelsea suspects about him, his plans are put in jeopardy. And how can he protect her from the real stalker?

Is Matt the kind, funny, sincere man Chelsea is falling in love with, or some kind of letter-writing stalker? She must decide whether he is a dream come true or her worst nightmare.

But no matter how far she roams, she always returns to the genteelly shabby Victorian mansion where she grew up, the last place her father lived. Darcy’s world is turned upside-down when the Victorian is slated for demolition.

In a desperate attempt to interest him in something once more, Nick buys a beat-up Victorian mansion and draws up plans to replace it with a Victorian-inspired condo. He hopes his father’s old spark will return if he helps him build the new condo. But he doesn’t expect such opposition from his new tenant, Darcy Ferris. Nor does he expect to fall in love with her.

Jana Richards has tried her hand at many writing projects over the years, from magazine articles and short stories to full-length contemporary romance, paranormal suspense and romantic comedy. She loves to create characters with a sense of humor, but also a serious side. She believes there’s nothing more interesting then peeling back the layers of a character to see what makes them tick.

When not writing up a storm or dealing with dust bunnies, Jana can be found pursuing hobbies such as golf (which she plays very badly) or reading (which she does much better).

Jana lives in Western Canada with her husband Warren and two senior cats named Layla and Leelou. You can reach her through her website at http://www.janarichards.com

#firstlinefriday 2.3.2023

Okay, so in book 5 of the MacQuire Women series, PASSION’S PALETTE, we’re back to that action sentence again. And I did what all the experts tell you to NEVER do in a first line – I had my heroine waking up to greet the day.

Le sigh….I’m better now, I swear. LOL

#firstlinefriday 1.20.2023 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Book 3 in the MacQuire Women’s Series, FIRST IMPRESSIONS, give us today’s first line Friday.

“Dr. Rogers, the dog-bite patient from the veterinary clinic is here.”

As you can see, with this book I learned to change up from strict exposition to a line of dialogue that puts you right in the thick of the story, LOL!

Hopefully, after reading that line, readers want to know who Dr. Rogers is and who was bitten by a dog.

I’m starting something new this year on Fridays – I’m going to post the first line from one of my books to bump up my backlist profile.

So here’s the first one from my very first book SKATER’S WALTZ, published in 2015.

I definitely got better the more books I wrote, lol!

My #top10 Contemporary Romance Authors I think you should know…

One-click authors are, for me, heaven on earth! Whenever I see one of their names scroll down my feed or across my coming-soon link on Goodreads, I immediately click the book to order it without even reading the blurb. These authors are always consistent in the quality of their writing and the beauty of their romance stories. Whenever I read one of their books, everything else in my life fades away because I just can’t stop reading the story. Laundry doesn’t get done, dinner is late, and sometimes I forget to get dressed for the day. (this is okay since I work from home, heehee)

In no real order, just how they popped into my head, here are my top 10 contemporary romance authors I think you should know and read.

Kari Lemor

Marianne Rice

Donna Simonetta Stevens ( and her alter ego Louise Stevens)

Charlotte O’Shay

Jennifer Wilck

Claire Marti

Katie O’Sullivan

#author JAN SIKES SADDLED HEARTS #newRelease

You all know I love when my author friends come to visit and bring me their latest work. While Jan Sikes and I have never met, we are very good email and social media buddies! Today she is visiting me and talking about her newest release SADDLED HEARTS which is garnering fantastic reviews from readers everywhere. Let me have her tell you a little about it…

Jan….

Thank you, Peggy, for reaching out to me about a guest blog post for my newest book release, Saddled Hearts! I am honored to be visiting!

While the book is no longer on tour, there were still some parts of the story I had wanted to feature but ran out of time, so I’m going to share one of those here with your followers.

While doing my research for this book, I visited The Gold Horse Ranch. The owners shared a story with me about a colt born on the ranch. The mother died giving birth, and they had to pair the colt with an adopted mother. It was a process to find the right mare who would accept the baby as her own. On the Gold Horse Ranch, they named the baby Magic, and she has a star on her forehead. They said all the other horses gathered around the stall to witness the birth. I was so taken by the story I had to include at least something similar in Saddled Hearts.

Here is the excerpt:

Colt rambled on about the horses while he drove. Genuine caring came through his words. “Lightning is a horse I’ve had since I was a boy. He was born right here on this ranch, and it was a magical experience.”

“Magical?” Sage glanced in his direction.

“His mother died giving birth. I was there with my grandfather that night, and I swear to you, a light shone down inside the stall. I know it sounds corny, but like the pictures you see of baby Jesus and the Star of Bethlehem.”

The description made the hairs stand up on Sage’s arms. “That’s amazing! What do you do when a mom can’t feed her baby?”

“We have to pair the colt with another mare. We had to bottle-feed Lightning for a while. It took a few tries, but a mare finally adopted him and raised him. Now he’s getting up in years. The average lifespan of a horse, if it’s well-cared for, is twenty-five to thirty years. Lightning is sixteen.”

“How did he get his name?”

“You’ll see when you meet him. He has a mark on his forehead that looks like a lightning bolt, and he could run like the wind. Still can when he wants to. His mother was a Thoroughbred, and his sire a Quarter Horse. That’s a great combination. I won many a race on his back.”

***

I’ll always treasure the day I spent on The Gold Horse Ranch soaking up the way of life and all the stories. I shared some versions of several of them in my book. I’d love to hear from you. Have you ever been around animals that had to be adopted by another to survive? Let’s talk!

BLURB:

Colt Layne owns the Layne Horse Sanctuary. He lives an idyllic life between caring for the animals and playing music with his band. That is until a stranger appears with unreasonable demands. When someone murders the man, Colt is arrested. He’s been framed, but by whom and why?

He needs to talk with his deceased grandfather. But that’s impossible. Or is it?

Sage Coventry is gifted with the ability to communicate with the deceased. Skeptical but desperate, when Colt consults with her, he gets more than messages from beyond the grave as she breezes into his heart with sweet patchouli fragrance and tempting lips he longs to kiss.

The race against time to clear his name and save the ranch launches them on a mission that brings shocking revelations.

A new #bookrelease from talented author C.B. Clark FORGING FORGIVENESS #romanticsuspense

You all know – because I say it all the time – but I lovelovelove when my Wild Rose Press sistahs come to visit and bring me their new books. Today is a treat for me and you! C.B. Clark has a new romantic suspense out titled Forging Forgiveness and she is allowing me to share a bit of it with you! Take a gander at this sure-to-be-a-bestseller novel…

When small-town college instructor Candace Cooper discovers bloody, bare footprints in the snow while running in a state park deep in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, it brings back the horrific nightmare of her past.

Detective Aiden Farrell is determined to redeem himself in his new position in Colorado, even if that means ignoring his growing feelings for the beautiful professor he meets during an investigation. His fear that the footprints she saw are connected to a recent spate of missing teens intensifies when Candace is assaulted on campus.

Aiden and Candace join forces, but as they start unraveling the truth, they get closer to each other—and to a killer who’ll stop at nothing to achieve his nefarious goal.

Caught between duty and love, Aiden fights in a race against time to save the woman he loves.

Candace Cooper’s breath fogged out in plumes in the frosty, late afternoon air as she pumped her arms and loped along the narrow trail. Yesterday’s rain had turned to sleet, and overnight, two inches of fresh snow blanketed the path and weighed down the limbs of the tall pine trees.

Hey, what was that?

She slowed to a stop, turned around, and walked back three yards.

What the heck?

Indentations—a heel, the pad of a big toe, and the four, smaller indents of the other toes—were clearly formed in the smooth dusting of snow. The set of small, narrow footprints tracked along the snowy trail, veering into the deeper shadows of the forest. Someone had walked in his or her bare feet down the cold, snow- covered path.

The wind gusted against her damp face, and she shivered. Late November was too cold for anyone in their right mind to be out in the mountainous backcountry of northeast Colorado walking around without proper footgear, let alone barefoot. She squatted for a closer look.

A smear of dark red, stark against the white snow, marked the heel depression of each left footprint.

She touched the red splotch with the tip of her gloved finger. A rust-colored smudge stained the light blue cotton. Her heart rate kicked up.

Blood!

Sinking back on her heels, she peered into the forest’s deepening shadows and shuddered. Only four o’clock in the afternoon, and the sun was already disappearing behind the mountains. Nothing stirred. Even the squirrels were quiet, as if the silent forest watched and waited.

She knew this area of the park, ran the trails in the summer and snowshoed over the flatlands in the winter. Nothing manmade existed out there—no houses, no cottages, nothing but trees and wild animals.

Most visitors to Creighton Springs State Park stayed on the well-groomed gravel walkways and didn’t venture far from the parking lot. She never saw anyone on the hilly trail, not in winter. Yet, as recently as this morning, or early afternoon, someone had gone this way—and in bare feet. They’d left a blood trail. If that person was injured, maybe they needed help.

She slipped off her gloves and traced her finger along the impression. Too small to be an adult male or female’s footprint. Her gut clenched.

A child?

God, no! Please don’t let it be a child. The unspeakable horror of the past reared over her like an attacking beast, and she sagged onto her knees, her heart pounding as if threatening to burst from her chest. A piteous moan escaped her lips. Not again. Dear Lord, please, not again.

Hot tears burned her eyes.

A loud crack reverberated throughout the silent forest.

She bit back a scream and surged to her feet. Gunshot?

An instant later, another sharp boom filled the air.

The piercing sounds of distant rifle fire were unmistakable. But no way would anyone be shooting. It was illegal to hunt in the park. Besides, it was too dark for a hunter to see his target.

Her heart thundered, her breath frozen in her chest. Seconds passed, turning into minutes. Her back tingled with the certainty she was being watched, but she couldn’t move, could only stand there and listen, waiting for the next shot.

The forest remained hushed.

The sun dipped behind the mountains, and the valley filled with dark shadows as night settled in.

A snap of a branch breaking shook her out of her paralysis. The breath she’d been holding whooshed out, and she fumbled in her backpack and drew out her headlamp. Slipping the elastic strap over her forehead, she switched on the light.

Following the thin beam of light cast by her headlamp, she jogged down the trail. Her legs wobbled, and she stumbled over slippery roots and rocks, staggering, almost falling, but she dug deep and kept running.

The parking lot where she’d left her car was an hour’s walk, but if she ran, she could make it in half that time. Heart thumping, her lungs burning, she raced around a bend in the trail but lurched to a stop at a flicker of movement in the trees on her right.

A large shadow separated from the trunk of a fir tree and formed into the shape of a man.

She shone her headlamp into the forest.

The beam of light revealed a tall man with broad shoulders wearing a camouflage-patterned coat and baggy, green cargo pants. A gray woolen toque hung low over his forehead, and a thick black beard covered the lower half of his face. A rifle was strapped over one shoulder.

“He…hello?” Her voice was thin and reedy. He wasn’t a park ranger. Not in that getup, but he had to be the person shooting, considering the enormous rifle slung over his shoulder.

Not one part of his body moved. He didn’t even blink.

Hands shaking, she peeled off her gloves, letting them fall to the ground, and yanked out the can of pepper spray she carried in a canvas holster strapped around her waist. Sliding off the safety guard, she held the can up, the nozzle pointed at the unsettling stranger. “Who are you? What do you want?”

The man remained still and unspeaking.

Her heart thundered in her ears. “Hey, I asked you a question. What do you want?”

Behind the beard, he smiled, his lips stretching wide, his teeth gleaming in the headlamp’s beam. In the encroaching darkness, his muscular frame appeared larger, his demeanor even more threatening.

Fear clawed her throat, and her primal instincts kicked in. Run! The urgent command roared through her, but her knees locked and refused to obey. Her breath puffed in and out in frantic huffs. “Don’t come any closer.” Gripping the can of pepper spray so tight her hand ached, she shifted her finger on the trigger.
