Okay, today’s topic – THE STRANGEST THING(S) I’VE EATEN – is going to be a very short piece for me because I am a food-shunner.
Let me ‘esplain.
I have MULTIPLE food allergies, the largest of which belong to the NIGHTSHADE family.
Just from this classification alone I can’t eat potatoes, tomatoes, onions, peppers or eggplants without getting violently sick. Just think of all the dishes one or a combo of those ingredients are in. Spaghetti sauce, any kind of Mexican food, most Asian foods. Yeah. It sucks…big time.
But I also have other weird food allergies, such as one to FUDGE – I can eat chocolate, but whatever the chemical combination is that make’s fudge fudge, if I eat a piece, I break out in vibrant hives that last for days.
And let’s not talk about strawberries.
I had one – once – and wound up being transported to the ER via ambulance in anaphylaxis. And I’m not joking…not even a little. Because of that allergy I shy away from any fruit with a “hair” covering like peaches. Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, passion fruit and kiwi all make me violently sick to my stomach so I stay away from them as well.
So….from all that you can surmise that I don’t eat food I’m not certain I’m allergic to if I can help it and that narrows my scope of trying new dishes and recipes.
The weirdest thing I’ve ever tried – and actually liked, though – is snails. Or escargot for those of you who like to Francophile the word.
The first time I had them I was 7 and they were smothered in a lovely garlic butter sauce. I’ve eaten them that way every since. Yummo.
I know….I’m really boring, aren’t I?

That has to be tough working around your allergies. I’ve never tried escargot.

Sorry to hear about your food allergies. I have a milk allergy and a soy intolerance. It sounds like you’re much more limited, though!
Snails sound interesting.
My post.

Wow. I’m so sorry for your allergies. That must be so hard. I can’t even imagine. I’m not too adventurous when I eat, but other people probably think so. I eat just about anything, but it’s hard for me to think of any of it as weird. My kids think I’m weird. But I feel sorry for them because they are missing out!

Never tried escargot, but that’s okay. I’ll bet it is hard getting around those allergies. ((hugs))

Oh no! You’re allergic to the nightshade family?! After reading about the San Valentino family, I always imagined you eating lots of Italian food with tomato-based sauces. For about a year, I was on a no-nightshade diet, and it was hell. Hugs! I had escargot once in Paris, but the strangest thing I’ve ever eaten was hakarl (rotten shark) when my husband (then my fiance) and I visited Iceland. Truly revolting!

OMH MY hubby at hakarl when we were in ICELAND too!!! We’re twins! hee hee. Yeah, it’s a bummer not being able to eat anything tomato based, Once in a great while I will do some sauce that I’ve cooked, and I still get as sick as a diggity!

I completely can relate, kinda, as my daughter is allergic to dairy.. like all forms of it, even the lactose free kind. Food allergies are hard. Both our children have severe allergies and so do my husband and I and they’re different foods. Planning meals used to be a challenge but you get used to what’s possible for you, don’t you? I certainly learned to read labels! When I say “Take care,” I mean TAKE CARE!
