Today, I want to tell you about 5 books that impacted my life. A few of them I read years and years ago, a few, recently. But all of them left a mark on me and made my life, and my insights into life, a little bit better.

UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN by Jan Krakour. I knew nothing about the Mormon faith until I read this book. It is an encyclopedia of info and deals with a modern-day murder involving the belief system. Very powerful.

MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL by John Berendt. The most fascinating look into a society murder. The book was much better than the movie, but the movie wasn’t bad.

SHANNA by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss. The very first grown-up ( read SEX ON THE PAGE) romance I ever read when I was 16.

THE 7 HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This book truly impacted me and gave me a great deal of insight into the issues with being gay in this country. I adored this story, the characters, and the phenomenal ending.

7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE by Stephen R. Covey. Insights into how the mind works and what makes habits turn into success, this book is a must-read for anyone who wants to get ahead int he word be it financially, socially, or academically.

So today, five things to know about me…(I’m not too conceited, am I, lol!!)

~ I recently lost 62 pounds. The fact that I had that much weight to lose makes me crazy, but it took over a year and I am determined it stay off!

~ I sleep only 2-3 hours a night due to menopause-induced insomnia- and yes, it’s a thing! No cure.

~ I am techNOsavvy. Truly. I freak out whenever something goes wrong with my computer or phone or Ipad. I turn into a toddler having a tantrum and no one can deal with me.

~ I hate traveling. I am a real hermit and would never come out of my house if I didn’t have to. The pandemic shutdown and isolation? Didn’t have any effect on me because I was already staying home every day.

~ I have voted in every election since I’ve been legally allowed to, wherever I have lived. I’ve even voted for categories like dog catcher and coroner. It is a privilege to be able to vote and I never shirk the task. Ever!

5 more tips for new authors. These are some more things I wish I’d known before I got my first publishing contact.

  1. plan for the long game. There’s a saying that everyone has one book in them. That would make you a one-and-done author. Don’t be a one-and-done author. Make this a serious career and plan for it like you would if it were a job out in the workforce.
  2. don’t write to market. Ever. Today’s hot vampire is tomorrow’s cliche. Today’s dark fantasy fae is tomorrow’s no-sales story. Write what you want to write, not what the market at the moment is telling you is hot.
  3. don’t overload yourself with social media. You don’t have to be everywhere, posting constantly. I learned this lesson early on when all I was doing was creating content and not creating stories. Pick a lane and make yourself an expert at it.
  4. never stop learning the craft. Take courses. Go to conferences. Read craft books. Never stop learning. Your writing will only mature and get better if you do.
  5. networking works. Join a writing group. Start locally and move to the national level. Many times it really isn’t what you know but who you’ve met that can give you a leg up in the business. Learn that lesson early in your career and it will truly help you.

To go along with the myths from last week’s post, today I’m talking about 5 tips for new authors. Things I wish I had known before I ever published.

  1. Back everything up. To the cloud, to a different drive, a different computer, a thumb drive. No matter what it is you want to use, just back up your work. Every time you write. Every time.
  2. Don’t accept the first offer for publication that comes your way. I know you want to be a trad published author. But not every publishing house is the same and some won’t have your best interests at heart at all. research research research them before you submit, and if you receive an offer of publication. Hand in hand with that…
  3. get a lawyer to go over any contracts you have to sign.
  4. NEVER pay a publisher to have your book put in print. THEY incur the costs, not you. If they want $2000 upfront, run. Fast. As far away as you can.
  5. Start writing that second book while you’re shopping your first around. You want to build momentum and the only way to do that is to produce.

Today I want to debunk a few misconceptions, so my Friday five is 5 myths about being a writer.

  1. writers are master plotters. When half the group pants a book and half plots, and a combination of the two PLANTS a book, this one is just silly. No one writes in the exactly the same way as another.
  2. we are arrogant and have inflated egos. **Snort** Really? People believe this? Oh if they only knew the depths of my daily despair about my inadequacy as a writer!
  3. we don’t care about reviews. We all say this, but the reality? Yeah, we do. A lot more than we should, but we do.
  4. writer’s block is just laziness. This one makes me mad. Although I’ve never suffered from it I have writer friends who have and it’s debilitating when the muse takes a holiday. It’s real, people. It’s not laziness.
  5. writers make loads of money. *Snort ( again)* If I wasn’t married I’d be out working my butt off at a day ( and probably night) job. Let’s put it this way: tax season is upon us and I’ve got no worries about owing anything to Uncle Sam.

Today’s five are my favorite one-liners in movies. I’m a sucker for a one-liner, throwaway line! In my writing, I try to be creative and give my characters really good, memorable one-liners. Sometimes I get it right; sometimes…not so much, LOL.

But these are the lines that have stuck with me forever.

  1. “Get off my plane” AIR FORCE ONE
  2. “There’s no place like home” THE WIZARD OF OZ
  3. “Leave the gun, take the cannolis” THE GODFATHER
  4. “I would die for you” ROBIN HOOD, PRINCE OF THIEVES
  5. “I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.” NOTTING HILL.

And I have to add one more because I quote it sososo much.

“I ain’t got time to bleed.” PREDATOR

Are you a romance reader? Or did you just stumble upon this blog because you were scrolling Google and liked the name? Hee hee.

I ask that question because for today’s Friday Five, I’m going to list the 5 books I recommend a novice romance reader read in order to discover what the genre is all about. Ready? Here ya go. My recs…

  1. SHANNAFrom New York Times bestselling author Kathleen E. Woodiwiss comes one of her most iconic and beloved romances of all time…A pact is sealed in secret behind the foreboding walls of Newgate Prison. In return for one night of unparalleled pleasure, a dashing condemned criminal consents to wed a beautiful heiress, thereby rescuing her from an impending and abhorred arranged union. But in the fading echoes of hollow wedding vows, a solemn promise is broken, as a sensuous free spirit takes flight to a lush Caribbean paradise, abandoning the stranger she married to face the gallows unfulfilled. Ruark Beauchamp’s destiny is now eternally intertwined with that of the tempestuous, intoxicating Shanna. He will be free . . . and he will find her. For no iron ever forged can imprison his resolute passion. And no hangman’s noose will keep Ruark from the bride— and ecstasy—that he craves.”  This was the first real adult romance ( read: SEX!) I ever read. To this day I think I’ve reread it 25 times! Perfection from a master writer.
  2. FRENCH SILKWhen she becomes a murder suspect, a New Orleans beauty and lingerie tycoon must share her most deeply buried secrets with a disturbingly handsome district attorney in order to clear her name.

Like the city of New Orleans itself, Claire Laurent is a vibrant beauty laced with mystery. As the founder of French Silk, a fabulous lingerie company, she has fought hard to achieve worldwide success. Then a TV evangelist attacks French Silk’s erotic sleepwear as sinful. And when he is killed, Claire becomes the prime suspect.

District Attorney Robert Cassidy knows Claire is damning herself with lie after lie about the murder, even as he feels her drawing him into her world and her very soul. But neither Cassidy nor her protests of innocence can save Claire unless she reveals a shocking truth — one she has sworn to take to the grave . . .” Sandra Brown has been a one-click author for me since I read this book. Mystery, sex, romance, and a great story are the definition of an SB book!
  3. THE NOTEBOOK “At thirty-one, Noah Calhoun, back in coastal North Carolina after World War II, is haunted by images of the girl he lost more than a decade earlier. At twenty-nine, socialite Allie Nelson is about to marry a wealthy lawyer, but she cannot stop thinking about the boy who long ago stole her heart. Thus begins the story of a love so enduring and deep it can turn tragedy into triumph, and may even have the power to create a miracle…” He’s called schmaltzy and vanilla-y in his writing, but this story is a love story for the ages!
  4. THE THORN BIRDSThe Thorn Birds is a chronicle of three generations of Clearys—an indomitable clan of ranchers carving lives from a beautiful, hard land while contending with the bitterness, frailty, and secrets that penetrate their family. It is a poignant love story, a powerful epic of struggle and sacrifice, a celebration of individuality and spirit. Most of all, it is the story of the Clearys’ only daughter, Meggie, and the haunted priest, Father Ralph de Bricassart—and the intense joining of two hearts and souls over a lifetime, a relationship that dangerously oversteps sacred boundaries of ethics and dogma.” Hands down one of the best books every penned. A love story for the ages – forbidden love, family intrigue, secrets, and heartbreak, This book has it all!
  5. DEVIL IN WINTER “I’m Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent. I can’t be celibate. Everyone knows that.” Desperate to escape her scheming relatives, Evangeline Jenner has sought the help of the most infamous scoundrel in London. A marriage of convenience is the only solution. No one would have ever paired the shy, stammering wallflower with the sinfully handsome viscount. It quickly becomes clear, however, that Evie is a woman of hidden strength—and Sebastian desires her more than any woman he’s ever known. Determined to win her husband’s elusive heart, Evie dares to strike a bargain with the devil: If Sebastian can stay celibate for three months, she will allow him into her bed. When Evie is threatened by a vengeful enemy from the past, Sebastian vows to do whatever it takes to protect his wife . . . even at the expense of his own life. Together they will defy their perilous fate, for the sake of all-consuming love.” So no one writes a steamy, LONG, love scene like Kleypas. The hottest scene in this book takes place with the h/h standing upright and against a door. I’ll leave it to you to go read it!!! Kleypas is another of my one-click authors. I don’t write historical romance, but I read it because of her!

#fridayfive 5 Must-haves in a Romance book… 1.5.2024

For my first Friday five of 2024, I give you…the 5 MUST-HAVES in a romance book. And I struggle sometimes to get them all in my books, lol!

  1. the meet-cute. Whether they bump into one another, literally (!), suffer from mistaken identity, get introduced as new co-workers after having a one-night anonymous stand, the meet-cute is vital in setting up the conflict for the romance to thrive and reach its conclusion with everyone happy ( reader and characters)

2. Strong characters. No one is going to root for boring, flat, or negative characters who defy growth and change. That, after all, is the premise of the romance novel. Take two people who would never have gotten together if left to their own devices, throw them together, and then allow them to grow and change into a couple we all, as readers, adore. I’ve read too many books ( and DNF’d most of them) where the main characters were just…wrong.

3. Believable tropes. Just like we need to root for the hero and heroine, romance readers need to know the basic premise, or the tropes used, to get them to their HEA. Forced proximity, best friend’s brother, secret baby, mistaken identity and scores more, all help define the road these two people will take in order to have them find love in the end. And all romance readers have their favorite tropes to read, and writers to write. My personal fav to read and write is friends-to-lovers because I am always on the edge of my seat to see who lets the other person know their feelings first.

4. Believable conflict. Again, you want to lose yourself in the story and not be reading and then think, this is just too dumb and no one would ever do/say this. I heard a great definition of a true conflict in a romance story at a conference once. Here’s the set-up: a fire marshall is called to investigate a scene of obvious arson with a death associated with it. The supposed arsonist? His girlfriend, a girl whose family died in a fire and the person responsible was the one found in the above fire.

Conflict to a T!

5. HEA. Or happily ever after for those not in the anacronym-know. In recent years, the HFN (Happily for now ) ending has also been used to define the end of the story. Whichever you choose to read or write, the end goal is for the hero and heroine to be together, have a defined love relationship, and be committed to one another.
