                                                   One Kiss  ( Misty Simon)

Blurb:perf5.000x8.000.indd

The last place Lorena Weber wants to be on Valentine’s Day is a singles party thrown by her newlywed best friend. But how can she say no? She’ll give it an hour—two, tops—and then she’s heading back to her normal life. But she didn’t plan on seeing the one man who had turned her world on its side New Year’s Eve with one kiss that opened doors she had firmly locked.

Caleb Manning got coerced into attending this ridiculous party by a co-worker. He’ll stay for an hour at most and then he’ll head home. That was the plan until he recognized Lorena across the room and had to see if that kiss was only New Year’s Eve magic or something more.

Excerpt:

By thirty-three he was on the verge of a divorce. The heart attack never came to pass, but the divorce had finalized just before New Year’s Eve, in time for the taxes to be screwed up.

But at least it was over. And he had celebrated New Year’s by going downtown to a local celebration where his new town actually dropped an eight-foot wrench from a crane in celebration of the New Year. The absurdity of the eight-foot wrench had distracted him from his loneliness for the moment. But then he’d been alone while everyone else was hugging and kissing at the stroke of midnight. He’d turned and seen the woman next to him was alone, too. They’d both laughed, shrugged, and then hugged. He hadn’t meant to kiss her, but she’d looked up at him with her mismatched eyes, and he couldn’t resist. Something had flared between them, something impossible to deny. Hell, he hadn’t even tried. It had been short, as kisses went, but it had packed a wallop. He hadn’t been able to get her name, and that was his only regret.

“Caleb!”

He hadn’t moved fast enough into the room for the ball of energy that was Melanie. She must have thought he wasn’t doing enough to immerse himself in her party. “Hey, Mel.”

“Did Dillon get your coat?”

“Yep.” He tucked his hands into his pockets and hunched a little. He felt gargantuan next to her.

“Well, come in and get something to drink. Mingle. The games are going to start in a few minutes, and I want you hydrated.” She smiled, and he blew out a soft breath. He’d had no idea what to expect, and the prospect of games did not exactly inspire confidence in him. But he could always step outside into the frigid February air if he had to. At least she’d calmed down on the exclamation points that had infused her voice for the last ten days. She was like one of the perpetually happy people he wanted to throttle except they were just too cute for him to actually do anything like that.

“Are you sure I can’t help you with anything?” He wasn’t above offering himself to kitchen duty to get out of playing games with a roomful of single people. Knowing Melanie, it would probably be something like Spin the Bottle.

“No, you can’t.” She grabbed his elbow, and he let her lead him out into the living room. “Mingle. And I can find you if you try to sneak away, so don’t.”

With that, she walked away in her four-inch heels like a drill sergeant on a mission, to greet more people coming through the door.

He made no eye contact as he headed for the buffet set up in the spacious dining room. He’d promised Melanie he’d come to her party to get her off his back about finding someone, but he had not agreed to participate in party games. An hour tops and he was leaving.

A woman laughed at the front of the line with a bunch of other women. The husky sound shot like one of Cupid’s arrows down his spine and landed in his gut. Where had he heard that laugh before?

He didn’t place it for a moment. But it all zinged into place when she turned toward him and he caught a full-faced glimpse of her mismatched eyes.

Je T’aime ( Ursula Whistler)

Looking for inspiration, designer Genevieve Hoffman agrees to an apartment swap and heads to the south of France. But when the apartment owner’s brother returns from deployment, she finds herself with a man who inspires fantasies rather than fashion.

Etienne Gagnon barely made it out of Syria alive during his last special forces assignment. All he wants is a little R&R in the apartment he shares with his sister. But the woman making breakfast in his kitchen isn’t his sister. He might not understand a word coming out of her mouth but he has no problem reading body language and likes what she’s saying just fine.

Excerpt:

With no more delays, he strode out the door and smiled at her dancing as she cooked in the small kitchen. Her back was to him. Her long black ponytail swung back and forth, opposite her hips. She’d lost some weight, too. Her bare legs had more tone than he remembered from last summer when she’d joined him at the gym. She was singing with such volume she didn’t hear him.

He took advantage of her distraction and grabbed her around the waist as he announced in French, “Surprise! I’m home!”

She snapped her head back, whacking the back of her head into his nose. Sharp pain made him grab his face, letting go of her. Her well-placed elbow cracked against his rib cage. An oof escaped his lips as he absorbed the blow. He backed away just in time to avoid a round kick to his knee. He let go of his side and put both hands in front of his chest in self-defense mode. She’d not land any more hits. “Brigitte! Why? It’s me! Stop this!”

This wasn’t his stepsister. This woman resembled her greatly, except she had larger breasts, better legs, and excellent self-defense tactics. She yelled in English. What she said was a mystery, but her face and body language told him everything he needed to know. She was fully prepared to kick his ass.

About the Author:

Ursula Whistler

A few years ago, Ursula Whistler got annoyed at a misunderstanding that happened with a group blog. That anger spurred her to write an erotic romance, which after many rounds of editing, became her first published story. Through some more writing and plenty of support from her colleagues in the Southern Louisiana Romance Writers group, she kept writing contemporary erotic romances mostly set in New Orleans.

Now that she’s moved to Florida, she’s writing and publishing with The Wild Rose Press as she adjusts to beach life and caring for her ailing mother. You won’t hear much about her mother unless you follow her on Facebook or Twitter, but at her website, she writes the stories behind the stories and other snapshots of her life.

ever after

Blurb:

Dillon Greenleaf is a member of Mythreal royalty and head of his planet’s security. Debutantes have been chasing him his entire adult life in order to wed a man of power, and he’s totally off women in general. But when he meets Keira Foley, an Earth officer, who he suspects is a pirate spy, he finds he quite likes the Plain Jane female.

Keira has been pegged brilliant and unattractive by her fellow officers, something she doesn’t mind until she meets the hot, royal stud-muffin who believes she is capable of treason against her own world. When they meet again at the Earth Embassy’s Valentine’s Day ball, Keira however blows Dillon’s mind.

Yet, in the midst of trying to find the real traitor, Dillon’s match-making grandmother, and a night made for love, Keira and Dillon must decide if they can put aside their differences in time to find a love that will be ever after.

Excerpt:

What the hell was he thinking?

After raiding Earth’s greenhouses for a way to get his undivided attention, she’d traveled to the remote local in the woodlands, two hours away from any civilization. Aside from this being what she’d romantically referred to as her spot, she’d picked the location because it’d be free of any surveillance devices.

When the sound of a very fast, powerful shuttle sounded in the distance, she stood in the middle of the lovely glen. The time it’d taken him to arrive hadn’t diminished her anger one bit.

As he came closer, slowed the shuttle to a stop and hopped out of it, she didn’t miss the sidearm strapped to his side. Her own was handy on her left hip, being left-handed as she was.

If things went south, there was going to be an investigation that’d rock the whole planet to its core. She prayed he’d listen. But his treacherous act—his obvious sense of being above any laws—led her to believe he wouldn’t.

As he approached, with narrowed eyes and a warrior’s wary stance, she held onto the remaining threads of her temper. How dare he stare at her as though she was the one to be suspected? Where does he get off?

Finally he stopped five feet away. Since she’d called this meeting, she meant to go first.

“I believe this is yours?” she remarked as she held up the small, silver burnt casing of his bugging device between her right thumb and index finger, leaving her gun hand ready. What was left of the device after being remotely fried—in such a way that it wouldn’t even produce a small puff of smoke or any odor—wasn’t much. But the casing had stayed attached to the underside of the embassy desk. No bugging device could be completely eliminated from a remote local, though she was sure he’d counted on her ignorance in even knowing what the remnants of the little round case were.

“The device you used was so highly advanced it heavily scrambled our security camera’s recorded images,” she claimed, “but I managed to piece enough of the video together to see who you were and the date. There was no mistaking a megalithic Mythrealian planting something beneath the general’s desk. All I had to do was check the damned guest list for the last time you were in our compound. The date you were there matched what was on the image!” She slowly shook her head. “Did you honestly think nobody would ever run a security scan? Do you think we’re that backward?”

He lifted his chin and came clean. “I’ll say this for you…your technical skills are beyond good. You managed to reveal my actions so let’s not tarry. Let’s get straight to the point.” He took a deep breath. “Yes…I’ve done exactly as you claim. I bugged your embassy. The act was mine and mine alone. I had no orders to execute this plan.”

She slowly shook her head. “Why? Why, in the name of God, would you do such a thing?”

“Because of you!”

A visit with Misty Simon, Candy Hearts Author

Today I get to interview MISTY SIMON, author of the Candy Hearts romance  ONE KISS which releases tomorrow! Getting to know Misty I realize we share a lot in common: our love for Stephanie Plum, our need for tunnelvision when working, and the fact we both think a bare wrist can be a turn on! Here’s Misty:

mistysimon

Misty,  The Writer

  1. What drives you to write? I have so many stories running around through my head and things I’d like to share.
  1. What genre(s) of Romance do your write, and why? I write contemporary and romance with mystery because I love happy endings!
  1. What genre(s) of Romance do you read, and why? I read historical because they are the one genre I’ll never write so I get to just enjoy them for what the are. Plus, who doesn’t love when a bare wrist can turn a guy on?
  1. What’s your writing schedule? Do you write everyday? I write every day and try to hit at least 1500 words around my day job and family.
  1. Give us a glimpse of the surroundings where you write. Separate room? In the kitchen? At the dining room table? I have a huge desk that’s actually supposed to a breakfast bar. LOL. It’s in the library surrounded by shelves of books.
  1. Are you the kind of writer who needs total quiet to compose, or are you able to filter out the typical sounds of the day and use your tunnelvision? Tunnelvision, baby! There are too many things going on with three dogs a teenager and a husband to find total quiet, but I do love my iPod with earbuds.
  1. Do you listen to music while you write, and if so, what kind? If not, why not? And that answered this question, partially  I listen to everything and anything that strikes my fancy at the moment from the 20’s to current plus a ton of classical.
  1. How did you come up with the plotline/idea for your current WIP? Because it’s the next book in my Kissinger Kisses story the couple was already there, I just had to come up with their obstacles. I think one very serious woman and one fun-loving guy can create their own shenanigans.
  1. Which comes first for you – character or plot? And why? Character for romance but plot is super important for the mysteries.
  1. What 3 words describes you, the writer? Romance, Mystery, Sass

promojpg

Misty – The Person

  1. Tell us one unusual thing about yourself – not related to writing! I was classically trained to sing opera
  2. Who was your first love and what age were you? Wil Wheaton and I was twelve ( Awww! Love that! PJ)
  3. If you could relive one day, which one would it be? Think GROUNDHOG DAY, the movie for this one – you’ll have to live it over and over and…. The day I signed my first contract.
  4. Do you like a guy in boxers, briefs, or commando? Well, not that depends…but I really like boxers.
  5. If you had to give up one necessary-can’t-live-without-it beauty item, what would it be? Lip gloss
  6. What three words describes you, the person? Fun, outgoing, dependable
  7. If you could sing a song with Jimmy Fallon, what would it be? I Want You Now by Depeche Mode
  8. If you could hang out with any literary character from any book penned at any time line, who would it by, why, and what would you do together? Stephanie Plum who I would teach to shot and help her remember to get her gun out of her cookie jar

Bonus round

I love the Actor’s Studio show on Bravo, so this is my version of it:

  1. Favorite sound – rain on a tin roof
  2. Least favorite sound – nails on the chalkboard
  3. Best song every written – Somebody
  4. Worst song ever written – That one about the shoes at Christmas
  5. Favorite actor and actress – Harrison Ford and Sandra Bullock
  6. Who would you want to be for 1 day and why? ( It can be anyone living or dead) A duchess in the 1700s just to see what it was like
  7. What turns you on? Intelligence and laughter
  8. What turns you off? Arrogance
  9. Give me the worst 5 words ever heard on a first date ( here’s mine: “Is that your real hair?”) You can’t put that way…
  10. What’s your version of a perfect day? Reading, writing, talking, napping and snuggling.

Teacher Lori Tait has always wanted a family, but now she’s 40, she’s pretty much decided all the good men are taken. Instead, she devotes herself to her students, particularly one little girl whose struggle with math seems inconsistent with an otherwise brilliant and artistic mind.

Mark Wilder hadn’t planned to become a father, but when a fling resulted in his daughter, Grace, he whole-heartedly embraced the role. Raised in a family of boys, what does he know about women and girls? Once he learns of Grace’s inability to comprehend basic math, he welcomes the role of tutor as a way to connect with his daughter; the opportunity to spend time with her sexy teacher is an added bonus.

When Lori cracks the mystery of Grace’s problem Mark’s world is thrown into turmoil; he’s the last person who can help his daughter. He pushes everyone away, confirming Lori’s theory about men. Grace, however, has other plans. Using her new-found understanding of math, she sets out to prove to her father and teacher that, together, they add up to the perfect match.

Excerpt

“The bottom line is I want to have a child and if I wait much longer I will be too old to be accepted into an IVF program.”

“I could give you one of my kids on a rotating basis.” Sharon grinned. “You could take a different one every week. Heck, I’d even throw in Tom for a week, he’s almost as bad as the young ones.”

“I’m serious!”

“I know.” Sharon sobered. “But raising a child isn’t easy, especially if you have to do it on your own. For all I rag on Tom about being a big kid, I couldn’t manage without him.”

“Lots of women do it,” Lori said stubbornly.

“True,” Sharon conceded. She took a sip of her drink and then seriously observed Lori over the rim of her cup. “Okay.” She put the cup down on the table and sat up straighter. “But if you’re determined to have a child, don’t do in vitro. Find some sexy hot stud and, at least, have the fun of doing it the old-fashioned way.”

Lori gagged on a mouthful of mochaccino, trying not to spit it out with laughter. “And where do you think I will find such a specimen?” she asked when she managed to compose herself.

Sharon shrugged. “What about Mr. Tall, Dark, and Yummy?” She pointed over Lori’s shoulder.

Lori swiveled in her chair and found herself staring at the crotch of a poster-sized Mark Wilder exiting one of his famous purple Jeeps. She quickly raised her gaze to the familiar stubbled chin and deep brown eyes, but not before she felt the crimson rush of embarrassment flood her face. He was the only man she’d met recently that looked better than his picture. Take a Trip to the Wild Side with Sedona’s Wilder Jeep Tours, the poster proclaimed.

Yessiree, if she was picking a partner on looks alone, she’d definitely take a trip to the wild side with him.

I’ve been a writer all my life but returned to my love of fiction after more than 20 years in the world of corporate communications—although some might argue there is plenty of opportunity for fiction-writing there, too. I have a Master’s degree in journalism and an undergraduate degree in psychology. A fan of many genres, I am drawn to contemporary romance and enjoy creating deeply emotional stories with elements of mystery and suspense.

I live in eastern Ontario with my wonderful husband, two fabulous children, a rescued cat, two Siberian Huskies, and assorted aquatic wildlife.

A hacker is targeting Meredith Crismis’s struggling new dessert company. But when the tech firm she depends on sends hunky computer expert Vlad Wiznitsky to fix the problem, things begin improving for Meredith, both personally and professionally.

First, her relationship with Vlad heats up to the sizzling point, then Meredith’s given the chance to snag a wealthy customer who could put her company’s bottom line permanently into the black. It seems like a dream come true, until the persistent hacker turns her “Divine Desserts” website into an X-rated marketplace, the wealthy customer demands a discontinued decorative item or else no sale, and her relationship with Vlad begins to unravel under the pressure of her obsession with professional success.

For a woman who deals with creating intricate wedding cakes and luscious muffins, life has suddenly become the ultimate recipe for disaster.

Excerpt:

“Do you know how long it’s been this way?” he asked.

“After all the trouble I’ve had with my office computer, I decided to check my company site several times a day. As of four-thirty this afternoon, everything was fine, so it hasn’t been long.” Meredith sighed. Just long enough to turn her business into an X-rated paradise for horny consumers.

“Message just came in for you,” Vlad said, and she stopped pacing and went back to the desk, silently praying it wasn’t like the twenty-seven other messages she’d received in the past fifty-two minutes.

As she leaned over his shoulder, she tapped the message tab, stared at the screen, and couldn’t restrain herself when she read the thing. Angry, frustrated, and seriously at the end of her rope, she gave a growl and stabbed her finger at the message.

“I just got another order, this one for two sets of edible underwear in chocolate mint and two sets in blueberry. That’s twenty-eight orders in less than an hour. I never did this good selling desserts.”

She swung away from the computer and went back to her pacing. “I can’t deal with any more of this today. I’ll contact those people in the morning and return their money.”

“Okay, did it,” Vlad said, pushing his chair away from the desk and turning to her. “You no longer sell X-rated sex toys.”

Meredith sank into a chair. “Thank God. If my parents ever saw that, they’d disown me.”

“Actually, I’m a little sorry to see that site go. Some of those toys looked sort of interesting. I mean what’s not to like about frosted condoms?”

She narrowed her eyes at him, trying to look forbidding even though she was feeling much too relieved to be angry. With Vlad on her side, her sense of helplessness was gone and she could even appreciate the crazy, if sick, humor of the situation.

“Interesting?” she said as she took a handful of rubber bands from a bowl on the desk and tossed them at him. “Now you’re really in for it, buddy.”

Vlad ducked and pushed to his feet, coming at her in a crouch. “I’m in for it? Think again, and then tell me who’s in for it.”

Laughing, Meredith sprang from her chair and ran, but he caught her at the door and swung her into his arms.

“Think you’re going to get what you want, eh?” she said, pushing at his chest.

She kicked her feet, and her shoes went flying. But they both knew her resistance was a sham.

He bounced her a little in his arms to get a firmer hold and began walking.

“I think we’re both going to get what I want,” he said, flashing a victorious grin. “And from the feel of things what you want too.”

About Darcy:

Darcy Lundeen

I was born in a big city and grew up amid pavements, pigeons, and the near-constant clamor of bumper-to-bumper traffic and testy pedestrians. In acknowledging my brick-and-asphalt background, my college roommate, who hailed from a small town filled with lush greenery, once actually said, “When did you see your first real tree and did you know what you were looking at?” She later insisted it was a joke, but since she seemed dead serious at the time, I still have my doubts.

A writer and researcher, who has dealt with subjects as diverse as international organizations, multiple sclerosis, the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, and the Soviet Union (when there still was a Soviet Union), I enjoy taking long walks, visiting the Ancient Egyptian, Ancient Etruscan and dinosaur exhibits in museums, doing sudoku (but only the easy ones) and concocting stories about everyday people who laugh a lot, cry a little and ultimately find the happily-ever-after they deserve.

At the moment, I still live in a big city, but now thanks to the diligence of the local Parks Department, I can always recognize a real tree when I see one.

MELT MY HEART (Marie Tuhart)

Veterinarian Lexi Mallory wants to submit to the sexy new Dom from the club, but trauma from her past keeps getting in the way. It’s a good thing Gabriel Huntington has a special way with difficult subs and sees the gorgeous Lexi as a delicious challenge. Unfortunately, Lexi fears her inability to relinquish control that will finally test Garbriel’s patience and he’ll end their contract. Can Lexi lower her barriers and allow Gabriel’s touch to melt her heart?

Excerpt:

Gabriel stood. “I’m not going to walk away, Lexi.” He stepped over to her. “I’m in it for the long run.” He gathered her into his arms.

Lexi gazed up at his handsome features. Then he lowered his head. His lips were firm, but gentle. Oh, they’d kissed before, but something was different about this one. His tongue traced her lips before she parted them and his tongue dived in.

Her arms went around his neck, her fingers tangled in his soft hair. He tasted like tea, and she sighed into his mouth. One hand grasped the back of her neck, holding her still as he plundered her mouth, his tongue dueling with hers. He took complete and total control, and it didn’t bother her like she thought it would.

When he broke the kiss, she was hot and her panties moist.

Gabriel gazed down at her with passion in his eyes. “That was just a taste of what I can give you, if you allow it.” He withdrew his arms from around her waist.

“Oh shit,” she whispered, before forcing her hands from his hair. She picked up her purse and fled. Did she just let the tiger out? Or did she willingly walk into the tiger’s cage?

As a young girl, Monda was placed into the tutelage of Mistress Teevac. Trained to use her empathic skills and educated in the ways to please a man, Monda is on her way to her new mate and master when her spaceship crashes. Rescued by a handsome space lieutenant, who literally makes her heart race, Monda’s eyes and heart are opened to new possibilities.

When Lieutenant Patrick Lancaster looks at the exotic Monda, he sees beautiful not alien. With an instinct to protect her and the desire to have her, he’d be honored t call her his own, but the starts have something else in mind. Or do they?

Excerpt:

Her face more angular than most. Her lips, thick. A constant pout, like she waited to be kissed. When he looked at her big blue eyes and long blue eyelashes, he thought exotic, not alien.

“Monda.” He reached to wipe the tear. No, it was not his place. He shoved his hand into his pocket. “I didn’t mean you. I don’t think of you as alien. I meant other aliens, like the green guys from Salvador. Have you seen them? About a meter high with pointed teeth. You can’t tell the males from the females except when they have their armor off.” He wanted to pull her into a hug. To comfort her and show her how sorry he felt. But she was promised to another, and while he might be an idiot, his mother also raised him as a gentleman. “Really, Monda, I’m sorry.”

“I know,” she whispered.

“What I mean is you’re an alien but not an alien. You don’t look like an alien. Of course any guy would be honored to have a girlfriend like you.”

“Any guy, but you.”

                                                      Say Yes (Katie O’Sullivan)

perf5.000x8.000.indd

Blurb:

Darby Malone has trouble saying no. Hosting a children’s Valentine party at her recently renovated gallery is the last straw, and the last time she intends to say yes to anything. That is, until she meets Ben, a well-known Cape Cod artist with eyes as deep and blue as the ocean. He stirs feelings in her that have been dormant for too long. Can she afford to say yes to him?

Ben Phillips needs this gallery show. His life has been empty since his wife died four years ago, his paintings the only thing giving him solace. But his style has changed, his art completely different than the breezy shore paintings he staked his reputation on. Can he convince Darby to give him a chance – and to consider him for more than just a place on her gallery walls? Will she give him a place in her heart as well?

Excerpt:

Every muscle in her body tensed at his proximity. Her mouth went dry and her brain clicked into hyperdrive, suddenly aware of every last detail of the six-foot god standing far too close. The shadow of scruff along his chiseled jawline, the salty ocean smell wafting off his leather jacket, the weathered tan along his cheeks and nose giving him the look of someone who spent all his time outdoors wearing sunglasses. His dark blond hair, tossed every which way by the February wind, looked like he’d just rolled out of bed. Darby wondered what it would be like to be in that bed with him, tousling the unruly mop with her hands, tugging him closer to taste those sculpted lips…

She blinked hard, reining in her fantasy. This was strictly business. Ben Phillips was kind of a big deal in the Cape Cod art community; it would be a coup for her little gallery to handle some of his paintings. She’d been surprised when he responded to her mass mailing with a request for this meeting.

He cleared his throat, looking hesitant, maybe even a little unsure of himself. “Maybe this is a bad time. I should come back in the morning as originally scheduled.”

“No, no,” she said, regaining control of her voice. “You just caught me by surprise. I guess I expected you to be…different.”

                     TWEET ME (Desiree Holt)

Blurb:

perf5.000x8.000.indd

Don’t call. Don’t text. Tweet me…

Married to her work, event planner Avery Kurtz runs her life and her business on a private message feed. She has no time to waste on emails or a love life, and Valentines Day means just more parties to plan. But when Tanner Voss, best man in Avery’s best friends wedding, is assigned to help finalize plans, her world is turned heart-side up. The hotshot attorney might be a player he’s hit on her before and she avoided that mistake but he’s also surprisingly cooperative, focused on making the perfect choices for their friends, and even on board with her messaging preference. Between the erotic dreams about the sexy litigator and her body urging her to forget caution, Avery is wondering if she was wrong about Tanner and wants him to do more than tweet me.”

Excerpt:

“Thanks for agreeing to dinner.” He indicated the booth. “Have a seat. Please.”

“No problem.” She slid in across the butter soft leather, settled her purse beside her and blew out a gentle sigh. “I’d say it wasn’t necessary to pick such a high end place but right now I need their relaxing atmosphere.”

“Tough day?” he asked, trying to keep his gaze from the way the soft material of her blouse draped against her breasts. Involuntarily his hands closed as if cupping those mouthwatering mounds and he had to give himself a mental kick. This dinner wasn’t to seduce her, at least not yet, despite the fact he was seized with a need to peel her clothes of and run his tongue over every inch if her body,

She gave him a wry look. “You’re kidding, right?” The waiter materialized asking for her drink order. “Margarita, please. Rocks, no salt.”

“That ought to smooth out the wrinkles.” He smiled at her. “So are you referring to the Will and Janice bombshell or did other things turn your day upside down?”

Her laugh had a touch of hysteria in it. “Oh, every day is nuts for me, but yes, Will and Janice managed to top everything else. Can you believe it? They want to get married in three weeks? And they want me—well, with your help—to take care of everything? Like I can just make it magically happen with all the pieces in place.”

“From what I hear about your business, if anyone can do it, you can.”

“Well, thank you. I guess we’re going to find out.” The waiter placed her drink in front of her and she took a healthy swallow before setting the glass back down on the table. “Okay, that helps.”

“I know the feeling. Hey, before we get into the wedding, it’s my turn this year to take care of the firm’s Christmas party. I wondered if I could have my admin call you and set up a meeting.”

Avery burst out laughing. “Tanner, Christmas isn’t for eleven months yet.”

He grinned. “I know. Just getting a jump on things. So can I?”

“If you want. Have her tweet me and we’ll set something up.”

He looked at her curiously. “Not a phone call? Don’t you talk on the phone?”

“When I absolutely have to. My tweets come in on a steady stream. I can just answer them without going back and forth, in and out like I have to with emails or texts. And phone calls use usually unsatisfactory.”

“Well, here’s to successful tweeting.” He lifted his glass to her and took a sip.

A Writer’s Journey

I think that I wanted to be a writer for my entire life. When my children were young I loved making up stories for them. I could hardly wait for the opportunity to put those words down on paper and create something of substance. Unfortunately life got in the way, and beyond work and raising a family my dream got stuffed in the closet until I finally retired. Even then it too four more years before I was able to actually begin to write.

Now, you’d think since I’d been dreaming about this for so long that the writing would be easy, right? Wrong! Oh, I even had an outline for my story, a murder mystery. No, not a romance. Not then. Why? Because growing up, my mother and my sister only read mysteries while I was growing up so I sort of followed in their footsteps. I enjoyed reading, them, really, and could hardly wait until I had the time to write one of my own.

That didn’t happen until both my late husband and myself retired. Then I was so excited to begin. I even had a complete plot and my list of characters all worked out. But a funny thing happened on the way to writing that book. After three months I still had only three chapters written. Now anyone who knows me knows that I can really crank out the words so it wasn’t hard to figure out that something was wrong.

Then one day I read a romantic suspense, fell in love with the plot and the genre and thought to myself, Okay, this is for me. Overnight it seemed a plot crystalized in my brain and I began writing. I loved that book. Just loved it. Of course, I had no idea what to do with it. I found the local romance authors group, almost by accident, and joined. I realized before the first meeting was over exactly how much I had to learn about writing a book. What a sock! You mean have to do all those things? Follow a plan? Etc etc etc.

At least I discovered where and how to submit my book, and so began the next part of my journey. One hundred and thirty seven rejections later the book still had not found a home, all though It took me five years to get that first book polished enough to finally make the sale.

In the meantime, however, I wasn’t getting any younger and I saw my shiny career disappearing into the dust of the future. But writing was in my blood and the ideas kept churning around in my brain so each day I was back at the computer, pounding away.

And guess what? I finally made my first sale. First I was numb. Then I opened a bottle of Jack Daniel’s and we had a drink to celebrate. Good thing I didn’t drink too much because the lessons on how tow rite a book that sells were just beginning. I’ll bet you thought all you had to do was sit down at the computer and start pounding away.

Wrong!

I learned things like “the hero’s journey” and “Big Black Moment” and “backstory” and…and…and… I was exhausted just looking at all the rules and regulations. But after I got over the shock I realized they were there for a reason and really did make for a better book. In all the hundreds of books I’ve read since then, it’s been easy to spot the books that break the rules. And trust me, they aren’t as good as the ones that don’t. A good story still needs to be told well.

Over the years I have worked hard to grow my talent and create stories people would love. I discovered early on that I write character-driven stories. To me, the character is the essence of a story. Create your characters, play the What If game with them and the stories will almost create themselves. I also learned that very often the finished product bears very little resemblance to what I began with. Again, it’s the characters. They live in my head and talk to me if they don’t like what I’m doing. I’ve learned I’d better listen to them.

Once I began writing romance I realized it as the best of all possible worlds. Under the romance banner I could—and have—written many subgenres—suspense, thriller, paranormal, to name just a few. I love living with my characters and telling their stories.

I’ve had so many funny things happen to em when people meet me and realize I fit well into the Senior Citizen category. I guess they think if you’re over forty-five you don’t know what romance is. I tell them that’s when it just begins. I’m even writing a series for couples fifty-five and over. It’s never to late to write and it’s never too late to love.

I have learned that if you really work hard at your craft you can succeed. I love writing so I don’t ever see myself not doing this. My characters and their love stories are my gift to my readers of all ages, who I truly love, and I plan to keep creating them for a very long time.

If you have the urge, it’s never too late to start.

A visit with Kayden Claremont

candyheartI’d like you to meet CandyHearts Romance author Kayden Claremont, author or RED HOT. I wanted to get to know her a little better and she answered a few questions for me today. You can read an excerpt of her new Candy Hearts release RED HOT below, and remember to enter the WILD ROSE PRESS RAFFLECOPTER at the end of this blog for a chance at a KINDLE FIRE.

Here’s Kayden:

What drives you to write?

The characters. I know that sounds crazy but it’s true. Since I was a kid characters haunted my brain. They won’t leave me alone until their story is finished. Then there are more characters wanting me to tell their story. Even when I decide to quit, and we all do, within hours I’m typing again.

What genre(s) of Romance do your write, and why?

I write Paranormal Erotic Romance. Paranormal because that’s the geek in me. I’m labeled erotic because the characters like having sex, and romance because I believe everyone and thing deserves to be in love.

How did you come up with the plotline/idea for your current WIP?

Red Hot is set in a western theme park. The family went to Arizona and we took a day trip to Tombstone. I fell in love with the idea of spending my day reenacting the Old West. I wanted to pack up and move there, but my husband and the kids didn’t like the idea. This story just blossomed in my mind while I was walking around this fascinating town.

RED HOT

Blurb:

perf5.000x8.000.indd

Treena Stanton, artistic coordinator of Sierra’s Cowboy Theme Park, wants to exact revenge on Clayton Wagner. She had a crush on him in school, but he never acknowledged her existence. Revenge is sweet but not as sweet as the pleasure of his touch.

Strategic accounts manager, Clayton Wagner lost a bet and has to work the next twenty-four hours at his buddy’s theme park. But when his “boss for the day” with mouth-watering curves demands he wear a cowboy costume, all he can think about is finding out what’s under her petticoat. But when the truth is revealed about their past, will the sparks of passion fizzle or burst into Red Hot flames?

Excerpt: Treena smiled at him. How could she not smile at that head of thick, black hair and those mahogany-colored eyes that had driven all the girls wild in school?

Clayton had been the captain of the football team and Treena had been–well, totally invisible to him.

She stood, straightened her shoulders to make her C-cups seem bigger, moved her hand down her navy skirt to accentuate her hips, and pointed to the costume. “No. I’m not kidding.” She took a step closer, tucking her long, red hair behind her ear as his spicy aftershave enticed her. “You applied for a job at Sierra’s Cowboy Theme Park and you’re confused about working as a character?” Darting her tongue across her bottom lip, she waited for her words to pierce his pride. “What kind of work did you think you’d be doing here?”

He tensed, as every fiber in his masculine body screamed not this. Satisfaction danced deep inside her. Even in his Italian suit, she could see that he was still athletic, with muscular arms and thighs. Clay still made her pulse race.

By the way he looked at her, she could tell she still had no effect on him at all. He stood inches away from her, looking her right in the eye, and hadn’t recognized her. Should she wave? Chant the school’s victory song?

Candy Hearts Author Judy Davis Visits

candyheart

Today I’ve got Candy Hearts Romance author JUDY ANN DAVIS, author of SWEET KISS with me, talking about how she “digs up” ideas for her writing. Judy began her career in writing as a copy and continuity writer for radio and television in Scranton, PA. She holds a degree in Journalism and Communications and has written for industry and education throughout her career.

Over a dozen of her short stories have appeared in various literary and small magazines, and anthologies, and have received numerous awards.

When Judy Ann is not behind a computer, you can find her looking for anything humorous to make her laugh or swinging a golf club where the chuckles are few.

She is a member of Pennwriters, Inc. and Romance Writers of America, and lives with her husband in Central PA.

AT the end of the blog is a link to enter the WILD ROSE PRESS RAFFLECTOPTER for a chance to win a KINDLE FIRE.

Here’s Judy:

                         Digging Up Story Ideas

judydavis

One of the many questions people ask when they know I‘m a writer is: How do writers come up with a story ideas? Ideas abound all over and are all around us. They spring from various sources such as our dreams, books and newspapers we’ve read, movies we’ve seen, television shows and current events we’ve watched, and writing groups we belong to. But many writers find that their own experiences and people watching are two of the best ways to get inspiration.

In “Sweet Kiss,” my novella for The Wild Rose Press “Candy Heart Romance” series, the first thing I chose, after selecting the title “Sweet Kiss,” was the setting. Where do I want my characters to live and work and play? I knew I wanted the hero to be a marina owner, and I knew I wanted the heroine to be a small business, coffee shop owner. Because I’m familiar with New Smyrna Beach in Florida, a small town below Daytona Beach on the west coast, I decided to fashion my town after it and call my fictitious town, “Little Heron Shores.”

Let me add that I personally love to write romance with a touch of mystery—and if possible, a little comedy, at least in the dialogue. I believe humor keeps the storyline from falling flat. And who doesn’t like to chuckle or laugh?

Knowing that I wanted some comedy, I decided a quirky and ditzy post mistress called Eva May Poole would be my so-called “villainess” who could mix the plot, hound the hero as she searched for a third husband, and aggravate the main character, Kate Clark. I also decided Kate would need to have a prior relationship with—or prior connection to—Tappe Vanderberg, the hunky Dutch hero. Also, they would have had to share a “sweet kiss” when they were high school sweethearts.

And thus, the story begins to take flight inside what we call the bizarre brain of the writer. After laying the foundation, I usually let my characters do some talking and walking on their own…unless they get overzealous. Then, I sit down and outline to rein them in.

I’ll end with this. For those who want to try writing piece of fiction, just do it. One of my favorite authors, who could spin a tightly-written, clean and interesting tale, was Louis L’Amour. His advice to those who want to write was: “Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.”

Sweet Kiss ( A CandyHearts Romance)

Blurbperf5.000x8.000.indd

Hard-working Kate Clark opens a thriving coffee shop that quickly becomes the local hang-out for students and the community. Her one wish is to eventually buy out her sister’s share of the old Florida home they inherited. However, Violet is in desperate need of cash and has other plans.

Tappe Vanderberg, Kate’s childhood friend and high school sweetheart, has sold his lucrative internet security business to return to Little Heron Shores and fulfill his dreams of owning a marina. Now the handsome Dutch-born businessman is making waves with single women all over town—including loony, post mistress Eva May Poole who’s in search of husband number three.

But it’s Kate Clark who’s wreaking havoc with Tappe’s heart, not Eva May. Can he find a way to shake the dingbat post mistress and convince Kate to give him a second chance and the sweet kiss he remembers from an earlier time?

Excerpt:

Tappe picked up the grimy jar of candy hearts. “No way! I can’t believe Fay saved your candy hearts.” He twisted off the lid and shook one into his hand.

“Neither can I. Don’t you dare put that into your mouth. Those candies are over a decade old!”

“So? Sugar doesn’t spoil.”

“Okay, go ahead. Eat it. Poison yourself. Why should I care?” Kate said drily. “Just don’t call me in the middle of the night.” With a shake of her head, she turned back to the stove, took out a cold plate from the freezer, and plopped a teaspoon of the liquid from the bubbling pot on it, then ran a finger through the mixture to see if the jam stayed parted and stable, refusing to run together. She removed the pot from the stove, set it on the table, and started filling the pint and half-pint jars.

“You don’t mean that.” He dropped the candy back into the jar, and came up behind her. He started nuzzling her on the side of her neck.

“Do you realize I’m working with hot liquids?” She tried to be stern as she squirmed away still holding the hot pot. She could never quite pull off reprimanding

Tappe, especially when he was on a roll. And he was on a roll.

“Not as hot as you are. Want to make out?”

Kate looked at him askance. “Now? Here? Are you sane?”

“Yes, I’m fairly lucid. But if your answer is a no to making out, then can I lick the pot instead?”

“If you promise to quit licking my neck.”

                         Kiss Me Again (Monique DeVere)

What can be more romantic than a Valentine’s Day wedding?

A Valentine’s Day wedding on a Caribbean beach!

The last thing Riley Flynn wants is to be present at her ex-fiancé’s wedding—which should have been hers—but she refuses to give him the satisfaction, despite the nosedive her life has recently taken. Now, if she can only find a plus one to prove she isn’t a complete failure.

All Sam Rutherford wants is a peaceful life, but his zany neighbor is making it impossible. The woman is a menace to herself, and anyone in her path—he has the dent in his car to prove it. But when she raises those big amber eyes and confides in him, how can he say no to anything she wants? Soon she’s invading his life and bungling her way… into his heart.

Excerpt:

“I’d have to kiss you first before I can kiss you again.” The low intimate timbre of his tone sent a prickle over her, tightened her skin.

To disguise the sudden wired sensation in the pit of her stomach, Riley popped the sweet into her mouth, smiled then shrugged. “Well, there’s that.”

Even from the distance of his desk that separated them, Riley noticed the way his gaze dipped to her mouth then darkened as she crunched the chalky sweet.

“C’mere.” His voice, richer, darker, and sexier caressed her.

Riley gulped against the tension constricting her throat; her heart pounded in anticipation as she swallowed the chewed candy. “I don’t think that would be wise, Sam.”

“I’m not asking you to be wise, Riley. I’m asking you to come over here.”

“Why? Do you need me to look at something in that file you were reading?” She kept a playful smile in place as she thought of a way to ease out of yet another potentially awkward moment she’d created with Sam. She was pretty sure she’d make a fool of herself if she closed the space between them.

“Riley.” Her insides liquefied whenever he said her name with such command. “Come here.” With that rusty edge to his usually smooth voice, she couldn’t help but obey.

She slowly pushed to her feet and, on shaky legs, she moved around the desk toward him. “Sam?”

He stood, closed the remaining space between them. “Say my name again.”

“Sam…” This time it came out breathy and needy.

Blurb:

Makenna Stewart flees Scotland for the Big Island of Hawaii intent on making real a cherished dream—a bakery of her own. Hard work and long hours leave Makenna craving some fun in her life. Her best customer, Greek-god sexy surfer Tom may be just what she needs, but she suspects there’s more to him than board shorts and a devastating smile.

Retired professional surfer and real-estate multi-millionaire Tom Bensford, is there when she opens every morning, but he’s not craving her Morning Glory muffins. Fascinated by the dark-haired, blue-eyed wahine with the creamy Celtic skin and devastating Scottish accent, he’s never met a woman like her. Too bad he’s about to destroy her dreams.

To him, it’s just business. To her, it’s the kind of betrayal she fled Scotland to escape. Can the island magic in Makenna’s heritage save her dream and their romance, or will his secret tear them apart?

Excerpt:

She met his gaze. “I…”

The waitress saved her from answering by arriving with their first course, crudités and a tasty selection of dips. The wine with dinner came from a winery on Maui. The ono, a local firm white fish, prepared three ways, each more delicious than the last, made Makenna wish for the recipes. And the passionfruit meringue rivaled her own. Replete, Makenna leaned back to savor the sense of utter contentment suffusing her. “This has been an incredible meal. Thank you.”

Tom took her hand and gently feathered the inside of her wrist with his thumb. “We can’t leave yet. The sun will set in a few minutes. You don’t want to miss the view from here. We might even see the green flash.”

“I read about that. It’s rare, isn’t it?”

“Rare and lucky.” Tom gave her an evil grin. “Would you like some extra luck tonight?”

Makenna cocked an eyebrow his way. “It depends on what use you plan to put it to.” She fought back a grin, knowing full well what he meant. The promise he’d made before dinner at the ranch when she’d reached for his zipper and he’d stopped her by kissing her hand. That’s for some other time. He hadn’t pushed, but she knew he wanted her. Was she ready for this relationship to go to the next level? Aye, she was.

Tom just smiled. “Look, the sun is touching the water. It won’t be long now.”

He scooted their chairs together to face the sunset and draped an arm across her shoulders. The breeze picked up, as if the wind was being drawn into the water with the drowning sun. Makenna could barely keep her attention on the display as Tom’s fingers gently stroked her shoulder, then traced up the side of her throat to tangle in her hair.

“So lovely,” he murmured, his breath warming her ear.

Makenna turned to face him, letting her lips meet his, gently at first, then more firmly. “People can see us,” she warned when they broke apart.

“I don’t care.”

He kissed her again, and she lifted a hand to his face, liking the rough scratch of his whiskers on her fingertips. A change in the light told her the sun had gone down. “We’ve missed it.”

“We don’t need it,” he answered and pulled her to her feet. “Let’s go.”

“The bill…”

“Already taken care of. Your place or mine? Mine’s closer.”

A little talk with Monique DeVere 1/12

promojpg

Today I’ve got a little interview with Monique DeVere, Candy Hearts author of KISS ME AGAIN, available tomorrow.

Here’s a glimpse into Monique’s writing life. And don’t forget to enter the Rafflecopter at the end of this blog for a chance to win a KINDLE FIRE, courtesy of the Wild Rose press.

  1. What drives you to write?

Monique: I can’t NOT write, or create something. I write because I love people, because I love LOVE, and the idea that God created two people especially for each other. I love happy-ever-afters, and enjoy writing about people who finds theirs with laughter, and sometimes tears, along the way.

  1. What genre(s) of Romance do your write, and why?

Monique: I write Romantic Comedy and Romantic Comedy/Mystery/Suspense.

  1. What genre(s) of Romance do you read, and why?

Monique: I enjoy reading Romantic Suspense, Category Romance, and of course Romantic Comedy, but my thirst for knowledge leads me to read more nonfiction.

  1. What’s your writing schedule? Do you write everyday?

Monique: Early morning is my ultimate writing time, and I try to get my words in early. However, this doesn’t always work out because, more often than I care to admit, I let doubts and negative reviews stop me from writing. This type of funk can last for weeks! I’ve promised myself to do better in 2016! First stop…read NO reviews.

  1. Give us a glimpse of the surroundings where you write. Separate room? In the kitchen? At the dining room table?

Monique: I have a study where I can thankfully close the door and write. I very much doubt I would ever get a word written otherwise.

  1. Are you the kind of writer who needs total quiet to compose, or are you able to filter out the typical sounds of the day and use your tunnelvision?

Monique: I only wish I had tunnel vision. It takes no effort at all for me to come up with story ideas, so the slightest distraction can trip my imagination on a new story path, even in the middle of a full-on writing flow. Needless to say: this is my gift, and my curse.

  1. Do you listen to music while you write, and if so, what kind? If not, why not?

Monique: Sadly no, I can’t listen to music while I write. I need total silence in order to focus on creating a story, to visualize every scene with enough clarity to translate it to the written word. I’m easily distracted, so I tend not to allow any type of distractions. I’ll listen to music before and after writing, but never during.

KISS ME AGAIN will be released tomorrow. Here’s a little snippet about it and then… a little snippet of it!

Excerpt
