My Sexy Saturday109 – GirlfriendsRUs

This week’s theme: My Sexy Girlfriend

mysexySat

This is our nod to all the sexy girlfriends out there. We know all about a sexy girlfriend and how their lover feels about them. There are the hidden looks, the longing gaze, the love shining in their eyes and all the things that come with love. The girlfriends can in all shapes and sizes because sexy has no bounds.  We love sexy and it’s always so fun to share.

Sexy can be anything, such as romantic moments like walks on the beach, a home cooked meal or even in another galaxy. It could be two lovers here on Earth dreaming about the day where they go on a magical vacation to another planet. Or staying right here at one of those wonderful places we can find in our own world.

Sexy has nothing to do with looks or status or even wealth. It doesn’t demand perfection and it isn’t pretentious but it does make us want to read those books.

We know that everyone has their own idea of sexy and we all love sexy!

This scene is from my new release FIRST IMPRESSIONS.

“Did you know about this?” Clarissa asked, her brown eyes moist as they peered up at him.

He nodded. “Moira and I talked about it at Alaina’s christening. I know you were shocked when we came through the door and saw everyone, but we really wanted you to have a party, Clarissa, and a surprise seemed fitting. I hope you’re okay with it.”

She squeezed his arm as shiny tears pooled in the outer corners of her eyes. Before he could say another word, she laid a hand across his cheek, and, with what he knew were several pair of inquiring, nosey eyes watching them, kissed him softly on the lips.

Somewhere behind them he heard his mother sigh.

“It’s the nicest, sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me,” she said. “Thank you.”

He wanted to tell her there would be a lifetime of parties from now on, since he was never going to let her go. She never had to worry again about being alone on her birthday, or any other day. The notion he wanted her with him, in his life, forever, shook him to his very core. But it wasn’t unease he felt. It was absolute joy.

With another nod, he said, “Okay then, let’s go have a party.”

MySexy Saturday # 108

Here’s a sexy scene from my upcoming 9/23/15 release FIRST IMPRESSIONS

FirstImpressions_w9816_2_85

Her fingernails raked over the muscles of his torso, and with feather-light movements, twirled and dipped around his nipples, now as taut as hers.

He pulsed against her lap, hot and solid, and every time her tongue sucked at his, he grew even harder.

“I want to be inside you,” he whispered into her ear, taking the lobe between his teeth and biting, “pounding into you until we’re both senseless. But I want to go slow, too. I want to learn every beautiful inch of you, everything that gives you pleasure.” He pulled back and gazed into half closed lids, drunk and hooded with desire. “And then I want to make you come as many times as I can. Over and over.”

He watched her open those cocoa-colored eyes wide, so dark now he couldn’t see where the pupils ended and the color began, and swallowed. Hard.

Her cheeks flushed with a rosy pink hue, offsetting the paleness of her perfect skin. Skin he wanted to run his hands, his teeth, and his tongue across. And then do it again.
“No one’s ever said that to you before, have they?”

She shook her head, the movement causing her unsecured breasts to sway enticingly against his hands.

“I intend to say it to you as often as I can.” He took her face between his hands and gently rubbed her cheeks with his thumbs. “Clarissa. I want you so much. So much.”

How does your Hero smell?

I know… that’s a horrible title. LOL. It conveys so many negative images, doesn’t it?

What I really want to know is, what –for lack of a better word – smell or scents do you use to describe your male characters?

I’ve read heroes defined as smelling like sandalwood, natural musk, earthy, woodsy, piney, and like leather. Okay. So he smells like he’s been tramping about in the woods or forest. These are okay descriptions for lumberjacks and Men in Kilts.   I’ve also read descriptions stating the hero smelled like cigarettes, booze, hay, horse sweat, and even “like a farm.” None of those descriptions made me want to jump into fictional bed with the guy.

I read a very old romance novel once that said this: His clothes had the odor of the fish he’d caught that day on them. Right away I knew I wasn’t going to finish this book. There was no way a hero should smell like stale-or even fresh-fish.

Ugh.

Sensory descriptions are mandatory when you write romance novels. All five of the senses need to be explored. Sight, taste, and touch have their own separate categories and I could blog for days on just those three alone. Sound is also important to put in a narrative or a descriptor. But smell; smell can form an instant recognition and connection of your character with your reader.

Everyone knows what grass, lemons, and the beach smell like. They are sensory memories stored in your brain and olfactory system for life. So if I describe a hero’s aftershave as cool and lemony, you have an immediate reference and knowledge for what it smells like.   If I say my hero brought the smell of fresh cut grass in with him, again, you have an allusion to what I am trying to convey. The line he smelled of sand and sea is fairly synonymous with the fresh smell of a beach. (Note, smelling like the sea is NOT the same as smelling like fish!) These are pleasant scents that, when we read them, elicit pleasant memories.

I’m not big on guys wearing cologne. I’ll put that out there and suffer the wrath of every woman who loves her guy doused in Polo. I tend to favor – and be stimulated by (okay: turned on by!) more natural scents. I love a guy who’s right from a shower and smells clean and fresh; I don’t even mind the normal odor of a sweaty guy – if he’s doing something sporty or physical and working up a nice, decent sweat. This is the smell I usually think of when I hear someone smells manly, or like a man. And there’s something about a guy who’s grilling and the aroma following him that makes my mouth water.

Okay, now that I think about the last one, it could just be the smell of cooked meat I’m getting aroused by.

Speaking of meat, a few years ago there was a study done by some big company about what smell men are most attracted to on a woman. It wasn’t roses, or any kind of flower. It wasn’t the clean, dewy, fresh-out-of-the-bath fragrance either. It was – are you ready for it?- bacon.

I know!

I seems cooking isn’t the only way to a man’s heart. All my single girlfriends out there – invite a guy you like to a meal and then make him something with bacon in it. It’s almost like a guaranteed proposal. I’ll leave it up to you to decide what that proposal should be.

So, when you’re doing due diligence and incorporating those 5 senses into your writing, remember to include something that will stimulate a positive olfactory memory.

And stay away from descriptors for fishy smells.

Best male smell descriptions you’ve ever read…let’s discuss…

So, who was your first FICTIONAL crush?

With the advent of boy bands, teen heart throbs, and movie bigger than life superheros, do any young girls-commonly called TWEENS- read nowadays? Other than the Twilight series, I mean? I remember vividly, long summer days spent on my bed or on a blanket at the beach, reading book after book. Summer was my favorite time as a tween because it meant no reading list from school. I could read what I wanted, when I wanted. I binged read Nancy Drew Mysteries like people binge watch on-demand television shows these days.

My first ever fictional school girl crush was Brian Beldon from the Trixie Beldon books. Trixie, a pre teen  like me, had two brothers, the oldest of who was Brian. Jet black hair and a winning grin, Brian wanted to be a **sigh** doctor. He was frequently the voice of almost-grown-up reason when Trixie got caught in her hair-brained snooping mysteries and I just thought he was “it” for me. I had no real-life boyfriends until I graduated from college, ( I know: late bloomer!) so I had to live vicariously through my fictional one.

And of course, this got me to thinking: Who are some of the most popular and beloved boyfriends in fiction. This could potentially be a hot button issue because true fans are devoted to the boys they feel are the absolute best, so here goes. In no best-to-least-best order

All these  boyfriends are good guys, do-gooders, love their girls, and treat them well. They love their girls so much they put up with mood shifts, dangerous jobs, evil warlocks and vampires, societal restrictions, financial setbacks, and even terminal cancer.

But through all the foibles and follies of dating, the end result is they simply love, support, and respect their girls.

What more could you ask for from a boyfriend?

So. Who was your first fictional crush?

An interview with Pretty-Hot.com…

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve been many things in my life but the number one favorite is being an author. I’ve written 27 books from children’s tales, middle school stories, mystery to romance. Currently I’m focusing just on contemporary romance novels. I had my first romance published this year by The Wild Rose Press, titled SKATER’S WALTZ

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
There’s No Place Like Home is the second release in my series The MacQuire Women. It tells the story of Moira Cleary and Quentin Stapleton, lifelong friends, who realize they are nothing without the other.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Actually, no.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My biggest influences are Nora Roberts, Jayne Ann Krentz, Jill Shalvis and Lisa Kleypas.
When I was a kid I was fascinated with The Nancy Drew books and Agatha Christie.

What are you working on now?
Books 4-6 in the MacQuire women ( book 3 is in copy edits)

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use Twitter and my facebook author page the most.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep writing no matter how hard that first sale is. If you have something to say, say it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Put your butt in the chair and write. No excuses – Nora Roberts

What are you reading now?
Sherryl Wood’s “Vows” Series

What’s next for you as a writer?
Book 3 First Impressions comes out this summer. I’m going to the RWA conference in July and I’m trying to find an agent.

What is your favorite book of all time?
The Little Engine that Could because it’s the best book about self actualization and motivation ever written.

What’s in a hero? And I don’t mean a sandwich…

Yesterday, I took an hour to read over one of my favorite go-to books about writing and re-read the chapter on writing The Hero. For those of us who write romance, getting the hero right is as important as getting the heroine down pat. No one wants a wishy-washy hero who’s unable to make decisions in a pinch, or one who is so messed up emotionally that even our wonderful heroine can’t help him through his troubles. No. We all want a hero who embodies the alpha male personality. But what makes a hero, well, a hero? And what are they typical alpha male attributes that you want your hero to have? After researching this topic a few times, and knowing what I like in a man, I’ve  jotted down my favorite parts of the hero ( in addition to the washboard abs, toned biceps and great hair!)

The Alpha male (hero):

1. Doesn’t give up. Ever. Whether it’s taking control of a bad situation, or pursuing the heroine.

2. Is courageous. He will do what needs to be done, even it is dangerous.

3. Is a leader, a natural born one. Enough said.

4. Isn’t conceited or a braggart – about his looks, his job, or his lifestyle.

5. Lives by rules and a moral code. If he needs to break them, it’s for a damned good reason.

6. Isn’t emotionally needy.

7. Is ultimately a one woman man. When he finds that one woman, nothing will stand in his way to get her. And having said that, he fights for what is his.

8. Is confident in who and what he is.

9. Is smart – book and common sense-wise

10. Is dependable. If he says he will do something, or be somewhere, come hell or high water, he will.

I could add a bunch more attributes like funny, sexy, hunky, good looking, and  charming, but those are givens!

I’ll admit it: I like a strong man- emotionally and physically. I like a guy who takes charge, but isn’t condescending or boastful; who knows what  he wants and goes after it – without leaving a trail of bodies behind him! I like a man who can make hard decisions for the right reasons, but also knows when he needs to makes changes.

And of course,  I like a man with washboard abs, toned biceps, and great hair.

I’d love to know what some of your alpha male/hero attributes are.
