the truth as I know it…

I’m just going to put this out there and let it settle for a bit.

I am not a multimillion-dollar romance book seller.

Didn’t see that coming, did ya? LOL

In all honesty, if I’ve sold 1000 books in my 10 years of writing full-time, I would be surprised. My royalties certainly validate the thought.

I’m writing this today to dispel a myth I hear perpetuated all too frequently about indie writers – of which I am almost exclusively one these days. I still have a few publishers with my books on their lists, but nothing new to or from them in the past 3 years.

I posted a Tiktok the other day about handing my 2024 receipts and expenses over to my husband to prepare our taxes and how pitiful I felt doing so. You can view it here: TAXTIME. Honestly, I am not getting rich doing this. If my husband didn’t still work outside the home I would be forced to get a job just to be able to live. Being an indie author is a money pit of a career.

If you are indie, you have to pay for your editors, cover designers, copy editors. If you don’t know how to do it, you need to pay formatters, you need to pay for ISBN numbers so you can have a copyright of your work. You need to purchase your own books from your distributor if you want to sell them at booksignings, or on your website. You need to go to said book signings and they always involve hotels/table fees/gas/food so the ROI ( return on investment) is always nil for me. Case in point: I attended a booksigning in Salem, MA in 2023. The entire cost of the signing ( hotel/sponsorship/swag/books/gas, etc) was $ 1000.00

I didn’t sell 1 book.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t have $1000.00 to lose from my bank account.

As an indie you need to find your own arc readers, beta readers, influencers who will talk your book up so you can get sales. You need to do all your own marketing ( which is a full time job in itself) and pay for things like fb ads, instagram boosts or ads, etc. Again, the outlay cost is ridiculous.

Recently, I tried to get a bookbub deal, the holy grail – supposedly – of book sales. My category, contemporary romance, would clost $950 for a one day ad placement in their daily newsletter. My book was marked at .99cents. I would have needed to sell 2714 books at .35 cents royalties a piece ( the Amazon split) to break even. Remember when i said I don’t think I’ve sold a 1000 books total in my career? Yeah, wasn’t gonna happen.

BTW, Bookbub rejected me ad. Saved me that $950 I didn’t have anyway.

The next time you buy an indie book from an author remember these points.

The next time you pirate a book from an indie book, remember these points ( and do a little soul searching on why you are basically stealing from the author)

The next time you read an indie book from a library, remember these points.

The next time you read an ARC from an indie author, remember these points and that the author is giving you something for free when she probably can’t afford to, just so she can – hopefully – get a review. and some word of mouth traction.

The life on an indie author is not all yachts and fabulous parties and hobnobbing with celebs.

It isn’t even fun a lot of the time.

But we do it because we love the art of writing and the stories we tell and we hope other people love what we write as well.

We certainly don’t do it to get rich.

If I’m on a roll, I go for it and read the whole book in one sitting or in one day.

Gearing up for the Summer Sales and Book Events

I wanted to jump on today because Romanticon will be coming up soon and I wanted to remind everyone that I have a BOOK ORDER form for preorders for all my events. I’ll be 4 places in the summer, all listed below.

Now, I can’t bring hundreds of every book I’ve written with me, so it’s waaaaay easier for all of us * you and me!* if you preorder the book you want to get at the events.

Here’s the general link to the order form with all the instructions and books I’ll have available for purchase at the signings.

ORDER FORM

Remember, preordering ensures you get the book you want!!! Be well kids, and I can’t wait to see you at an event! ~ Peg

A Netgalley arc of BAD LIAR by TAMI HOAG

Small-town labels are hard to shake. Hometown hero. Fallen angel. Can anyone ever escape their past?

A murder victim dumped at the dead end of a lonely country road, face and hands obliterated by a shotgun blast, is not the way sheriff’s detective Nick Fourcade wants to start his week. His only lead takes him to the family of a hometown hero suddenly gone missing. Marc Mercier left his home for a weekend hunting trip and hasn’t been seen since.

Meanwhile, sheriff’s detective Annie Broussard begins her first day back on the job after suffering a brutal attack by taking on the case of B’Lynn Fontenot, a mother desperate to find her grown son, a recovering drug addict. Robbie Fontenot has been missing for eight days, but the local police have no interest in the case, telling B’Lynn that an adult has the right to disappear, and a missing addict is no big surprise. But B’Lynn swears her son was turning his life around. Sympathetic to a mother’s anguish, Annie agrees to help B’Lynn, knowing she’s about to start a turf war with the city police.

As Annie searches for Robbie Fontenot and Nick investigates the disappearance of Marc Mercier, it quickly becomes apparent that nothing is as it seems in the lives of either man. And it’s still not clear whether either—or neither—of them might be the unidentified murder victim. Old jealousies and fresh deceits, family loyalties gone wrong and love turned sour all lay a twisting trail that leads deep into the Louisiana swamp, endangering all who cross the path of a bad liar.

Now…what are you reading?? Share, because I’m always looking for new author and book recommendations. ~ Peg

TOMORROW is the day of…RETRIBUTION

Book launches either sneak up on me or they drag out forever, just waiting for release day.

With Retribution, it felt like it was going to take forever, and now, tomorrow is book release day and I can’t believe i haven’t done more to promote the launch.

Some day, I will have a PR team to help with all this.

Some day, I will have the time to do an effective launch, one that truly sells more than 5 or ten books.

Some day, the 1000 book preorder goal I keep setting myself up for ( and failing, horribly!! lol) will actually manifest.

Doesn’t look like tomorrow is any of those above days, but it is release day, and that just never gets old in my book!

Read it in print of Kindle or KU here: AMAZON

Order an autographed print copy directly from me, here: RETRIBUTION

Add it to your GOODREADS Want to read list, here: GOODREADS

And as always, kids, happy reading. ~Peg

A lot going on….

Just hopping in here today for an extra blog about a few new things ( and some old ones, too!)

First, the preorder link for my May 21st release of LOVE MATCH: Heaven’s Matchmaker ( Book 2) is livelivelive over on Amazon. You can go there, click, and preorder it so you’ll have it on your Kindle on release day. It’s also going to be in KU for the 90-day first period.

Now that you know that, do me a favor and go on over to Goodreads and hit the WANT TO READ BUTTON for me. The more people who do that, the more the book gets visibility.

Now, in anticipation of book 2 being released, I’ve got a GOODREADS GIVEAWAY going on for Book 1, Mix and Match.

You don’t need to read book 1 to know what’s going on in book 2. The stories are stand-alones with some of the same characters revolving in and out of Heaven, NH. But, having said that, I’m the type of reader who likes to read series in order, so….

If you don’t want to enter the giveaway you can simply order MIX & MATCH using this Universal link. It’s in wide distribution ( Kobo, Nook, Smashwords, etc) so you have lots of different venues to purchase it.

Last, I’ve also got RETRIBUTION releasing on April 23 on Amazon. I set myself a goal of 1000 preorders for this book and right now I stand at…..18. YIKES!! 2o days left to get 982 readers. Can you help a sistah out? LOL

I’m also selling autographed print copies here, on my website. Just click on this link: RETRIBUTION and I’ll send you one. Shipping and handling are included in the price ( Which is cheaper than amazon’s!)

Okay, I think that’s everything. PHEW!

#fridayfive 3.22.24

Today, I want to tell you about 5 books that impacted my life. A few of them I read years and years ago, a few, recently. But all of them left a mark on me and made my life, and my insights into life, a little bit better.

UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN by Jan Krakour. I knew nothing about the Mormon faith until I read this book. It is an encyclopedia of info and deals with a modern-day murder involving the belief system. Very powerful.

MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL by John Berendt. The most fascinating look into a society murder. The book was much better than the movie, but the movie wasn’t bad.

SHANNA by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss. The very first grown-up ( read SEX ON THE PAGE) romance I ever read when I was 16.

THE 7 HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This book truly impacted me and gave me a great deal of insight into the issues with being gay in this country. I adored this story, the characters, and the phenomenal ending.

7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE by Stephen R. Covey. Insights into how the mind works and what makes habits turn into success, this book is a must-read for anyone who wants to get ahead int he word be it financially, socially, or academically.
