Toady’s #fridayfive is an exciting one for me. Tomorrow, I will be at the Boston Marriott Peabody for GETTING WITCHY WITH IT 2023 as an attending and book-signing author! I’ll be at table #44 in the Centennial Room
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, 9.16-17, 2023 THE BOSTON MARRIOT PEABODY NEAR SALEM, MA
So, here are 5 reasons why you should come on down:
300 authors – spread over two days, Saturday and Sunday. I’m a Saturday author, so I’ll see you tomorrow!
Models – many of the authors are bringing their cover models with them to take pictures with fans. How many people do you know who have their picture with a famous book cover model? It could be you!!
Yesterday, the Romanticon 2023 book signing occurred in Trumbull. This was my second time attending the event and I am so glad I did.
I got to meet a whole passel of new-to-me-readers, reconnected with some wonderful author-friends and did a hefty amount of book sales. All good things.
And now as I write this at 3:44 a.m. in my hotel room, I am bone-tired – physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Here’s what people ( readers) may not realize.
Attending an event like this for an author is exhausting! Schlepping all your books, paraphernalia, book racks, swag, giveaways, preorders, table settings, is a monumental task, especially for someone like me on the other side of 60 and with no help. I travel to these events solo and it falls on me to get everything together and set up. I’m not complaining – please don’t think that – but it is a lot of physical work. You want your table to appear welcoming, not cluttered, to draw the new-to-you-reader in, but not inundate them, and to appear professional yet approachable and fun all at the same time.
For an introverted hermit like me, that last part is anxiety-producing and exhausting! LOL
Then, there’s the actual event.
Four hours may not seem like a lot to someone, but believe me, when you are standing, trying to make small talk, trying to entice people to buy your book, all the while the noise level in the big room you are in is deafening around you, it feels more like 20! Again, not complaining, just stating the reality of the situation.
But…the positives far outweigh any perceived negatives.
Yesterday, I reconnected with several people, both authors, and readers, I haven’t seen since prior to our pandemic traveling shutdown. Some, it’s been 4 years. That’s a lot of time. Yes, we are all a little older, some of us are more tired ( that would be me!) but it was delightful to see old friends again. And it was glorious to meet new authors and readers. I feel like my friendship circle grew tenfold yesterday.
As I write this, with my voice gone, my feet aching, and my back dreading the long drive – solo- home today, I am still thrilled I attended. This hasn’t been the best year for me so far, and I tend to isolate myself when I’m stuck in my feelings. Being out and about with people -people I consider extended family – truly helped reorient my brain back to a positive sphere.
So, a huge THANK YOU to organizer Kitty Berry and all her wonderful girl-pals who helped out on this glorious affair. It is a well-oiled and precision-practiced event that runs beautifully and gives all who attend the satisfaction of a day well spent.
I love titles with 3 things mentioned!!! Makes me think of the Wizard of OZ – lions and tigers and bears…oh my!. LOL
Anyhoo…
Today’s Tuesday tease is from my new (print) release of SABLE – ALWAYS A BRIDESMAID.The official release is May 17, but I had several author copies printed up because I’m going to a wonderful BOOKSIGNING this weekend in New Jersey Wine Country and wanted to have them available for purchase. Here’s the tease, first:
“Rough shift,” he said, sidling up to her as she buttoned her jacket.
“And it wasn’t even a full moon,” she quipped.
His grin shot out fast. “Can’t wait to see what that’s like in the ER.”
Her lids went to half-mast as she slid a glance at him. “Be careful what you wish for,” she said. “Full moons are nothing to make fun of around here.”
He shrugged and zipped up his jacket. “Can’t be any worse than trying to patch someone up with artillery fire exploding all around you.”
Her head whipped up and her unlined brow folded in on itself.
“Listen,” he said, “I’m starving and I imagine you are, too, since neither of us got a dinner break last night. Want to go grab something quick before heading home? The diner across the street makes the best waffles this side of the Mississippi.”
When a corner of her mouth lifted a bit, he felt ten feet tall. In the next instant it flattened again.
“I’m actually heading there for a breakfast meeting right now, so, sorry. I can’t.”
“Business meeting?”
When she rolled her eyes, he thought she looked all of sixteen years old again. Since he’d known her when she was that age, a familiar feeling of warmth moved within him.
Sable expelled a tortured groan. There was no other way to describe the sound that rumbled up from the back of her throat and blew past her lips.
“I wish it were a business meeting, but no.” When he cocked his head, she added, “I’m meeting with my cousin, Moira. She has something to”—she lifted her fingers in air quotes—“discuss with me, but I already know what it is and I really wish I had an excuse not to go.”
“Okay, now I’m seriously interested. What’s so horrible she wants to talk about?”
“Me.” Another eye roll.
“You?”
She nodded.
“What about you?”
“Not me specifically, I guess, but my unmarried, childless state.”
If he wasn’t mistaken there was a hint of bitterness in her tone, topped by a whole lot of embarrassment, solidified when her cheeks turned three different shades of crimson within a millisecond.
She closed her eyes and sighed. “I can’t believe I said that out loud. And to you, of all people,” she mumbled.
He’d think about the last part of her sentence later. For now, he said, “Let me take a guess here.”
She opened her eyes and – halleluiah – looked him in the eye.
“She wants to fix you up.”
Eyes closed again, she nodded.
“And you…what? Don’t want to be?”
Another nod.
“Because? You don’t like to be set up? Or you’re already seeing someone?”
He said a silent prayer it wasn’t the latter.
“The whole thing is ridiculously embarrassing, for starters,” she said. “I’m thirty years old and can get my own dates, thank you very much. But you’d think I was either twelve and knew nothing about the world the way my family acts, or pushing fifty and looking at a lonely later life with nothing for companionship but cats and Netflix movies.”
He wanted to laugh but kept the merriment inside him, understanding she was dead serious. She hadn’t said she was seeing someone, though, so that was telling.

KEENE ~ Hosts local romance author Peggy Jaeger!
Sunday, December 4th at 2pm
Peggy Jaeger
She will be at the Toadstool presenting her Christmas titles along with her 2022 book releases!
I’m a #contemporaryromance writer who writes #RomComs about strong women, the families who support them, and the men who can’t live without them. If I can make you cry on one page and bring you out of tears rolling with laughter the next, I’ve done my job as a writer!
#Family and #food play huge roles in my stories because I believe there is nothing that holds a family structure together like sharing a meal…or two…or ten. Dotted with humor and characters that are as real as they are loving, I bring all topics of daily life into my stories: life, death, sibling rivalry, illness and the desire for everyone to find their own happily ever after. Growing up the only child of divorced parents I longed for sisters, brothers and a family that vowed to stick together no matter what came their way. Through my books, I’ve created the families I wanted as that lonely child.
As a lifelong diarist, I caught the blogging bug early on, and you can visit me at peggyjaeger.com where I’m blogging about life, writing, and stuff that makes me go “What??!” daily.
I’m a social media junkie! You can visit me at all these sites any day and I’ll probably be there.
Tomorrow I’m off to Staten Island, NY – my old hometown – for the #TNTNYC2022 event. It’s my first time at this event and from what I’ve been reading and viewing online and on FB, it’s a raucous, fun, and busy few days.
After doing so many booksignings and author events over the years, I’ve seen a lot of varying behaviors from authors that sometimes make me cringe, sometimes make me smile, and sometimes allows me to learn from.
Case in point. This is an event where the author is promoting herself and her books. In layman’s terms – sales! You want people to discover you as an author and, hopefully, buy your book, love it, tell all their friends to get it too, and then preorder all your upcoming ones and read all your backlist ones.
That’s the goal.
To do that the author has to be engaging, willing to step out of her comfort zone to meet new people, and basically, put herself “out there.”
SInce writing is, for the most part, a solitary endeavor, many authors are not really “people” people. I’ve frequently seen authors at signings sit behind their tables, looking down at their phones, or gazing about at the other tables, readers, etc, never making eye contact or even smiling at people walking by their own table. They look uncomfortable, anxious, and – in my opinion – rude. Like they don’t have the wherewithal to be there, be present, and engage.
How do you expect to sell books? Granted, some writers are bestselling authors and people already know their name and come to these kinds of events simply to meet them and get a signed copy of the lastest book. Yippie for them.
I’m not that author.
Seven years in and I’m still building my brand, my writing reputation, and my readership, so I have to do whatever it takes for that to happen.
That includes being the first to talk to someone passing by my table, saying good morning, or how are you doing? What do you like to read? Nine times out of ten the person doesn’t read what I write, but at least I’ve made the effort to find out about her. Maybe her mom reads my kinds of books and that sparks the idea to buy one for her as a present.
Since Covid hit people have tended to hermit themselves – understandable, right? Prior to the pandemic I spent all my days home alone writing, never seeing people on a daily or even weekly basis, and working at my craft. I was one of those writers who had no difficulty with being quarantined, LOL, since I was a hermit anyway. I wrote a lot. A LOT. But when the restrictions were lifted I needed to sell those books and events like TNTNYC are the perfect venue to do so.
So I stepped out of my house, put on my big-girl author panties and engaged with people I don’t know inorder to sell my books.
Is it hard? Hell yeah. I’d rather be home in my jammies with my glasses on and no makeup on my face, then dressed and putting the PEGGY on for the public. But I do it, despite the nerves bounding inside me.
I am not a natural born salesperson. I would never have been hired by a circus to be the barker, the out-front man to lure people in. What I do have a gift for is making people laugh, so I use that wierd sense of humor to pull people in, make them feel comfortable talking to me about any topic, and then hoping they will want to read one of my books after that.
If you are a reader/book buyer at these kinds of events you are looking for several things:
~new authors to read/meet/and get to know
~Swag/freebies/candy (!)
~books
~fun
You are not looking for sullen or sad looking authors to talk to or try to bring out of their shell.
On the other hand, readers also don’t want an author to hound them. I never outright say BUY MY BOOK! As I’ve said, I’ll ask what they read, then either say, I write that or I don’t. And then I take it a step further and ask if they know anyone who reads the kinds of books I write – steamy romcoms, romantic suspense, smalltown, friends to lovers, and sometimes sweet romances. That’s a big list. And usually they discover that they do, indeed, read something like I write.
It’s all in the pitch, the sale, and the engagement.
Oh, and the visuals. This is my standup banner that I bring with me. Vibrant color and my brand. It’s an eyecatcher to be sure.
Another thing I find absolutley rude/annoying/irritating is authors who sit behind their table and never come out from behind it.
I rarely ever sit down. When I do it’s usually inroder to autograph a book because doing so standing is hard for me. I am always, always, standing. Either in front of my table, next to my banner, or behind it.
Was does sitting behavior annoy me so much? For one thing because the author is putting a physical barrier between them and the person stopping by their table. For another, it’s simply rude to have people talk “down” to you. Stand up! Put yourself on equal footing with the reader.
When someone comes to your house to visit do you stay seated in a chair, let them make their own way into the house and then never rise to greet them? If you do, I’m never coming to visit you.
It’s the same at booksignings. Get up. Stand up. Shake someone’s hand, or accept a hug. Let them take a picture with you. Be nice and open not rude and closed off.
I feel like I’ve been lecturing, and maybe I have. BUt sometimes it pays to say the things that people (Authors) don’t want to hear.
So, lecture over. I am going to pack all my stuff – books, swag, preorders, and that banner!
See you at #TNTNYC2022. I’ll be the curly haired, bottle blonde standing and talking in front of her table with the big, loud, Pink banner!!!
