#LongandShortReviews blogging challenge 11.6.19

I missed a few weeks of this challenge due to editing and writing commitments, but I’m back now!!!

This week’s topic is a goodie: Books I’ve recommended and why.

Oh, mama, I’ve a million of them. But, for brevity’s sake, I’ll only name a few.

  1. Harry Potter and the Sourcerer’s Stone. The first time I heard about this book I was watching the old ROSIE O’DONNELL show with my then 8 year old daughter and JKRowling was a guest. Rosie went ape-crazy talking about how much she loved the book so my daughter and I decided to buy it and read it together. Well, after we finished it I recommended it to every single mother in my little girl’s classroom and all my friends as well. That sparked a whole reading frenzy in our school – something  I am thrilled about! Opening up this incredible magical world to people who routinely didn’t read much was wonderful.
  2. Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer. This book was such an eye opener to me about Mormonism and it’s origins that I read it in less than 2 days and then actually went out and bought copies of the book to give to people. Riveting, informative, and excellently laid out,  Krakauer did a phenomenal job at exposing the Mormom church and it’s founders.
  3. Midnight in the garden of good and evil, by John Berendt. Again, the moment I finished this tale of a murder in a tight knit community complete with a cast of characters that a writer COULDN’T make up, I went out, bought copies, and gave it to all my friends. The movie was such a disappointment because it could never convey the actual suffocating familiarity these people lived under. The upperclass mores, class distinctions and prejudices, and even the food, were all described so perfectly in the book. I read it three times. Truly.
  4. Devil in the Windy City by Erik Larson. An historical look at a serial killer during the world’s fair of the early 20th century. Told with precision accuracy and in depth emotion, this book kept me up three nights so I could finish it. Not for the squeamish, to be sure!
  5. The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. A story of family, friendship, and enduring love set during WWII and the aftermath, this story just spoke to me on so many levels: female friendships, mother and daughter angst, interpersonal relationships, cultural snobbish. The perfect blend of fact and fiction.

#SundaySnippet 1.6.19

This year, I’m going old school with my Sunday Snippets.

Starting today, I’m giving you a sample each week of every book I’ve written, in the order it was written, in the hopes it will spark readers to explore my backlist ( and isn’t it amazing that my backlist only starts in 2015! Hee hee)

So, today,I’m bringing you a little scene from my very first published book SKATER’S WALTZ.

She was clad in white tights, white ballet flats on her feet, and a skintight black, sleeveless bodysuit that hugged her form like a second skin. The morning sun lighting through the windows glazed over her skin and frame, haloing her silhouette as she moved to the music.

For one brief moment, Cole’s heart stopped beating.

When had she developed this body? This totally alluring, completely sensual, and womanly body?

The quick bullet of desire that shot through his system unnerved him. This was Tiffany. Desire wasn’t an emotion equated with her. Because his hands started to shake, he thrust them into his jeans pockets.

The dancers continued to glide across the floor. When Patrick spun Tiffany around by her waist, only to rope her frame back to his body, Cole’s breathing ceased. With her back lying flat against the man’s chest, they looked like two lovers embracing. Their arms, torsos, and legs touched so intimately, so seductively, Cole was blinded by an emotion he’d never possessed before.

God, he couldn’t be jealous. This was just a dance routine.

Then why were the emotions brewing inside of him at war with one another?

What a treat for me – and YOU!!- today. I’ve got A Kenstington/Lyrical Press writing-sistah with me talking about her newest historical romance, plus she’s giving away a little prize. Leaning into him, she whispered, “We can renew our acquaintance in all ways that count.”

“So you’ll agree to bed me but not wed me?”

“For the moment.” She tapped her fingers lightly on his chest. “Would that be such a hardship on you?”

Sighing, he pulled a face. “I suppose not.” A flash of his boyish grin made her stomach drop. “May I woo you properly, at least?”

“Improperly would be more to my taste.” Fanny returned his smile with one of her own, as sultry and seductive as she could make it. “But I suppose some decorous behavior wouldn’t kill me either.”

“Good.” He took her hands and raised them to his lips. “I leave for Brighton at the end of the week. I’d hoped you’d be accompanying me as my wife, but that—”

“As your wife?” How arrogant of him to think she’d fall into his arms at the snap of his fingers.

“Well? Will you meet me in Brighton?” Matthew’s eager voice brought her back to the dim room now filled with possibilities.

“I will be happy to journey to Brighton, my lord. If I find you there, I do hope you will attend me most earnestly.” In a heart’s beat she slipped her hands from his, pulled his lips down to hers, and sealed the pact with a kiss so warm and sweet her resolve slipped a notch. “And now if you’ll excuse me?” Turning swiftly on her toes, Fanny raced for the door. As she grasped the handle, she glanced back at him.

The victorious grin on his face sent a shiver down her spine. She pulled the door open and fled into the corridor before she could change her mind.

AUTHOR Bio 

 

Jenna Jaxon is a multi-published author of historical romance in all time periods because, she says, “passion is timeless.” She has been reading and writing historical romance since she was a teenager. A romantic herself, Jenna has always loved a dark side to the genre, a twist, suspense, a surprise. She tries to incorporate all of these elements into her own stories. She’s a theatre director when she’s not writing and lives in Gloucester, Virginia with her family, including two very vocal cats and one silent one.

Jenna is a PAN member of Romance Writers of America as well as an active member of Chesapeake Romance Writers, her local chapter of RWA. Happy #BookBirthday to me!

I’m singing Happy Book Birthday to myself in my office right now! heehee.

HOPE’S DREAM ( A Deerbourne Inn Novella) released today and I’m over the moon. This is just the second addition to the new series from The Wild Rose Press, and since I got in on the ground floor – so to speak!- I wanted to make sure I wrote a story that was true to the series bible, the Deerbourne Inn itself, and me! I’ve never written a sweet romance before so I learned a lot about myself as a writer with this one, peeps, RESTRAINT being the biggest thing. I hope you enjoy the book and that you’ll become a big Deerbourne Inn fan. There are many more books to come in the series and I’ll be profiling them and their authors in future blogs.

#SundaySnippet & a #booksale 10.28.18

In honor of A KISS UNDER THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS being on sale for just 99 cents until 11/8/18 ( ebook only), I’m giving you another glimpse into the San Valentino family today. To the San Valentino’s, family is everything. Even when they bicker, they love one another to no end.

During the drive home from church, Mama told me I’d missed Fr. Santini’s introduction of himself while I’d been in poop-ville with Arianna.

“He’s one of ten kids.” She checked her image in the car mirror again as she had when we’d driven to church. “Three brothers, six sisters. Three sets of twins. Ten pregnancies. Madre di Dio, that poor woman’s insides.”

“I had ten pregnancies,” Nonna said with pride in her craggy voice. “She only had seven, ’cause the twins count as one each.” Okay, pride and a little splash of maternity one-upmanship. “My doctor says I got insides that look like shredded wheat,” she added, with a smug- filled smirk.

This was way too much information for me.

“So, a big family?” I said to the back of Mama’s head, hoping she’d take the hint and keep talking so we’d all be spared Nonna’s pregnancy horror tales.

“Yeah. One brother’s in construction, and one manages a restaurant downtown. He’s got a sister who’s a nun, too. They’re a very holy family.”

“I wanted to be a nun,” Nonna declared.

“You did not.” Mama turned her head to face her mother.

“Si, Francesca. E la verita. It’s true. I wanted to join the Little Order of the Flower. I loved the order, and the nuns were very popular in my province. So holy, so pure. All the boys back in the village were wild for me, though, and my papa needed money for the farm, so since I was the oldest girl, he married me off to your papa for two cows and a herd of goats.”

“Guess who got the better part of that deal,” Daddy said under his breath, forgetting the stealth-hearing Nonna possesses. From the backseat, and without any regard to the fact he was driving and could crash and kill us all, she clapped him on the back of his head so hard her palm turned beet red from the force.

“Hey!” Daddy rubbed his hand along his skull.

“It’s your own fault,” Mama said without a drop of sympathy and then reapplied her lipstick.

“She hits me again she’s going in the room next to Uncle Vito at the home.”

Nonna’s eyes narrowed to slitty little lines, and I know she was planning some kind of silent revenge on Daddy.

Nonna never wasted a malocchio.
