Elusive Dreams

“I have to know you’d be okay with marrying me. It wouldn’t be a traditional marriage, obviously. I wouldn’t expect anything from you…you know…in that way. It would be a marriage of convenience, in name only.

Her tongue poked out as she glanced at the floor. “You really want to marry a freak?”

“You really want to marry a scarred, impotent soldier who can’t walk?” There, he’d said it, and the world hadn’t ended. And she hadn’t walked out or looked at him with pity in her eyes. That’s what he dreaded most. The pity.

True Dreams

Jim’s words of putting it in the past and moving on rang through his head. Maybe he should try. Ask her out on a date. Easy, right? Baby steps.

“I’m hot. How’d you like to get ice cream before we head home?”

Sara chewed on her lip. “I didn’t bring my purse. Are you paying? I’ll pay you back later.”

“My treat.”

Jumping to his feet, he took her hand and hauled her up. They were going out for ice cream, and it was his treat. Could that count as a date? He thought it could. Even if she didn’t know.

A little about the author, Kari Lemor

Kari Lemor has always been a voracious reader. One of those kids who had the book under the covers or under the desk at school. Even now she has been known to stay up until the wee hours finishing a good book. Romance has always been her favorite, stories of people fighting through conflict to reach their happily ever after.

Writing wasn’t something she enjoyed when young and only in the last few years began putting the stories that ran rampant in her head, down on paper.

Now that her kids are all grown and have moved out, she uses her spare time to create character driven stories of love and hope.

She lives with her husband in a small town in New England dreaming of warmer weather. But only if it’s near the ocean.

#SundaySnippet 10.3.2020 ANGEL KISSES and HOLIDAY WISHES

So excited that one of my sweet holiday romance stories in included in the brand new CHRISTMAS COMES TO DICKENS holiday Romance anthology. 10 Award winning and Best Selling authors have collaborated to bring you 10 wonderful Holiday stories all taking place in the little New England town of Dickens. Today’s snippet is from my story ANGEL KISSES AND HOLIDAY WISHES.

Can a first love be rekindled when the past is filled with heartache?

After a personal tragedy, Sage Hamilton left the town she’d grown up in and boy she’d given her heart to. With a vow never to return, Sage forged on with her life in order to forget the sadness of her past.

Keith Mills loved Sage from the first moment he spotted her ambling down the hallway of their middle school. And she’d felt the same about him. Or so he’d thought until she’d walked away from everything they’d meant to one another with a tearful and rushed goodbye.

But now, eighteen years later, she’s back and, as the town’s new doctor, it looks like she’s staying. Can Keith put the hurt of Sage’s dismissal to bed for good? And will she want to rekindle the love that had burnt so bright all those years ago?

SNIPPET….

Brianna had rearranged Sage’s afternoon schedule in order to deal with Corrine Mills’ emergency. One of the best parts of coming back home had been reconnecting with Corinne. Since the passing of her own grandmother and mother, Sage had missed the wisdom and counseling of the women who’d helped mold her into the person she was today. Corrine Mills, with her ready shoulder to lean on and ears meant for listening, had been the perfect person for Sage to reconnect with.

Of course, hearing all Corrine’s accolades about the man Sage had once loved was a bit…unsettling. But she’d put on a happy face and let the old woman brag to her heart’s content.

Keith Mills.

He’d filled so many firsts in Sage’s life, reminding her of the ornament tree in Matilda’s shop. First kiss, first boyfriend, first love…and lover.

He’d also been the first man her heart had broken over.

Oh, well. All that’s in the past. He probably hasn’t even thought about me since I left town.

When she signed off on her last chart, the beeper attached to her lab coat vibrated.

~Keith Mills is here.

Dragging in a calming breath, Sage mentally prepared herself to see the man she’d left standing in angry and emotional tatters eighteen years ago.

She heard him before she ever laid eyes on him.

“Where’s my grandmother’s doctor?” he bellowed from the nurse’s station. “Get him up here right now.”

“I already paged Dr. Hamilton,” Deb said, her voice staying calm and controlled.

Sage stopped as she turned the hallway corner and spotted Keith.

He was impossible to miss.

From his impressive and imposing six-foot-three height he towered above the diminutive nurse as he stood, arms akimbo, glaring down his nose at her.

An annoyed scowl twisted his mouth, but the memory of how seductive and alluring those full lips could be when pulled into a wicked grin burned bright in her mind.

“Where’s Doc Martin? He’s been my grandmother’s physician for decades. Who is this Hamilton person?”

“Keith.”

No amount of preparation could have prevented the full effect of Keith Mills’ gaze from shooting through Sage when he turned to her.

As a teenager he’d been all gangly arms and monkey hands, bony shoulders and narrow hips. His face had yet to fill out, but even back then his features hinted at a classic, movie star handsomeness to come.

As a man now, he’d outgrown the teen gauntness and his body had settled into perfect male proportions. Those bony shoulders spanned a yard and dropped into arms bulging underneath a fitted shirt. That hint of good looks had blossomed into a face sculpted by the gods of gorgeous. Cheekbones cut from glass sat over a square and powerful jaw. All in all, he’d grown into one magnificent man.

Damn him.

Whatever he’d been about to say died before he gave it a voice. In the span of a heartbeat his expression went from annoyed to confused, his eyes widening, then the corners pulling into a squint, his lips lifting from their frown to form a wide O of surprise.

“Sage?” Incredulity graced his voice – a man’s voice. Rich and deep; hard and commanding. A shiver of intense and unexpected longing zipped down her spine at the timbre.

She swallowed and beat back the panicked nerves tumbling through her system. “It’s been a long time.” She walked toward the nurse’s station, her gaze steadier than her trembling hands.

Indecision blasted through her the nearer she came. Be professional and shake his hand, or hug him like a long lost friend?

“What are you doing here?”

The irritation behind his question decided her response. She clasped her quivering hands in front of her and said, “You wanted to speak to me about your grandmother. Why don’t we go down to the cafeteria to talk? Corrine’s still in surgery and it’s going to be a bit before you can see her.”

Slipping her hands into her lab coat pockets, she tilted her head, indicating for him to follow as she began walking toward the elevator bank.

Wait.”

She stopped, mid stride, and turned back around.

“I don’t understand.” He shook his head, his eyebrows lifting to his hairline. “You’re my grandmother’s physician? You’re…Dr. Hamilton?”

#longandShortReviews #wednesdaybloggingchallenge 4.15.2020

Typically on this date I would say HAPPY TAX DAY to my American brethren.  Not  this year, since Tax day has been pushed to July 15.

So, HAPPY WEDNESDAY everyone! hee hee. Today’s topic is another goodie: Characters I’d invite to a dinner party.

I entertain in my home. A lot. Dinner parties, holiday parties, dinner get togethers, are all part of they way I keep connected to my friends. So, if I was to host a dinner as soon as the new normal of quarantine life ends, here’s a look at the guest list. I’m thinking this is gonna be a girl’s night in and invite just a bunch of ladies.

Elizabeth Bennet. Not only is she witty, quick, and an engaging thinker, I’ve wanted to ask her a question  forever. Over dessert of carrot cake and macaroons, I’d find a way to grab her attention and find out once and for all if she married Darcy because she was truly in love with him, or if she was in love with being the mistress of Pemberley.

Stephanie Plum. A New Jersey girl, I know Steph would bring a unique perspective to the table conversation. And I really want to just give her some plain old advice and tell her to pick a man! Choose between Ranger or Morelli, for pity’s sake. It’s been 26 books and she still can’t make up her mind!!

Eve Dallas. Come on, you knew that was coming!! And no, I don’t want to dish on Roarke ( although…) I want her to have – at last – a relaxing dinner without having to worry about social graces, if she’s putting her foot in her mouth, or embarrassing her hubby. Plus, I’d like to discuss some of her cases with her and her thought processes on how she solves murders.

I have to be a little conceited here and say the final guest would be Nell Newbery. Even though I know her like the back of my hand, there are still so many things I want to discover about her. But most of all, I want to feed her a good meal and hug her.

With me that adds up to 5. A good table number for sure because you can hear everyone and no one will feel left out!

Let’s see who some of the characters the other authors in this challenge would invite to dinner: L&SR

And here’s a sneak peek at the trailer for my 5.20.2020 release of VANILLA WITH A TWIST, on preorder now and at the sale price of just #99cents

Until next time ~ peg

A #99centsale for ANGELS FLY from #author Donna Simonetta

It’s no secret I love a sale. And a book sale is a favorite way to spend my money.

But a book sale on a great book by a fabulous author who’s also a friend  just makes my day, week, month!

Author Donna Simonetta is having a sale on her very first book! And it’s such a goodie you would be remiss not to take advantage of reading such a beautiful story, especially at such a great price!!

Blurb:

Two years after her husband’s death, Kelly believes her romantic life is done. Until she reconnects with her girlhood crush on social media, and as fate would have it, he lives across the street.

James is over the whole true-love thing. His grasping ex-wife tore that belief out of him, when she left him for a rich, old man. Then he finds out his first love moved to San Diego too, and their attraction burns as hot as ever.

What they don’t know is that Fate didn’t bring them together – the Guardian Angel Corps did, led by two unlikely Cupids – Kelly’s late husband and Zane, a rough and tumble, 19th century cowboy. When a Fallen Angel decides to tear Kelly and James apart, cherubs and harps aren’t going to cut it, and Zane’s unique skills might be just what they need to get a second chance at their first love.

Excerpt:

She flashed a bright smile at her old friend,  “I sent a friend request to Susie Davidson, and I want to see if she’s responded.”

“Susie Davidson,” Grace’s voice dripped with disdain, “we didn’t badger you into doing this so you could reconnect with Susie Davidson.”

“Hey, what’ve you got against old Susie? She was an integral part of our nerd squad in high school,” David said. “Right, Kel?”

When she didn’t reply, he glanced over at his old friend to see her frozen at her computer, all the color drained from her face. “Kel, what’s wrong?”

“I didn’t hear from Susie, but I did get a message from James Flynn,” she whispered.

David jumped to his feet and peeked over her shoulder at the computer screen. “Yummy James Flynn from Rye?”

Grace snickered, “Sounds like a sandwich. I’ll have a Yummy James Flynn on rye. Hold the mayo.”

Kelly and David swung their heads in unison to stare at her.

“What? It’s not my fault you two come from a town named after a bread.”

David shook his head mournfully and intoned, “Californians.”

“Native, baby.”  The blonde woman grinned playfully, “And don’t you New England Yankees forget it.”

“What does he say, Kel?” David asked with interest.

Kelly gulped, “He wanted to get in touch and maybe meet for a drink.”  She twisted her head to look up at David, her eyes huge on her pale face, “He lives here, David. In San Diego.”

#mermaids and a #99centsale from #author Joanne Guidoccio

I very rarely turn  my blog over to someone else. It’s the control freak in me, I think. So, you know that if I did give over my blog post for a day it’s going to be to someone whom I greatly admire and trust.

Joanne Guidoccio fits both those bills! When I was a neophyte author, Joanne’s blog was the very first one I appeared on to promote my soon to be released first book. She and I have been guests back and forth on both our blogs for the past 5 years, and she is one of my one-click authors whenever she has a new release.

Today, she’s here talking about Mermaids. Yes, you read that right! Joanne currently has 2 books on sale that concern mermaids. How cool is that? Seriously? How cool!! She’s written a blog post about Men and Mermaids and shares it here today, so sit back and prepared to be delighted!

Men and Mermaids

Guest Post by Joanne Guidoccio

Whenever I mention mermaids, I notice the emergence of Duchenne smiles on the faces of all the men in my circle.

What is a Duchenne smile?

It’s a smile that is characterized by the raising of the lip corners, which in turn raise the cheeks and forms crow’s feet around the eyes. French physician Guillaume Duchenne first recognized this smile while conducting research on the physiology of facial expressions in the mid 19th century. According to Duchenne, that distinctive smile is associated with strong positive emotion.

And, of course, George Clooney.

My conclusion: 21st-century men are still intrigued by those Sirens of Greek mythology, preferring to focus on their physical beauty and enchanting songs. Male minds can easily conjure up images of wavy auburn tresses, mesmerizing green eyes, and a curvaceous body.

So, when I describe the protagonist of the Between Land and Sea as an overweight, middle-aged ex-mermaid, I’m not surprised to see a variety of facial expressions.

At a workshop, an argumentative lawyer was very blunt (and rude) in his criticism: “I don’t understand why your mermaid has to be old and fat.”

“Fifty-three is not that old.” I ignored the weight issue.

He persisted. “It is when it comes to mermaids. Why couldn’t you let her be young, thin and beautiful?”

Thankfully, the conversation was interrupted by the facilitator’s call to resume the workshop. A few minutes more, and I might have lost patience with the annoying lawyer who couldn’t accept my vision of an older mermaid.

Very few men are as argumentative as the lawyer. My male friends and relatives want to hear more about Isabella of the Mediterranean Kingdom, aka Barbara Davies, and the international banker who dumped her. Several are amused by the concept of a mermaid carrying extra pounds. One friend asked if the artist was planning to feature an overweight mermaid on the cover.

In The Coming of Arabella, the unexpected arrival of Barbara’s perfectly-preserved twin sister evokes more traditional responses and more Duchenne smiles.

How would the men in your circle react to an older, wiser mermaid?

Blurb – Between Land and Sea

After giving up her tail for an international banker, Isabella of the Mediterranean kingdom is aged, weathered, and abandoned on the fog-drenched shores of southwest England. She faces her human journey as a plain and practically destitute fifty-three-year-old woman.

With the help of a magic tablet and online mermaid support, she reinvents herself as a career counselor, motivational speaker, and writer of self-help books. Along the way, she encounters a cast of unforgettable characters, among them former mermaids, supportive and not-so-supportive women, deserving and undeserving men, and several New Agers. As Isabella evolves into Barbara Davies, she embraces her middle-aged body, heals her bruised heart, and learns to love again.

This contemporary version of The Little Mermaid offers hope and inspiration to anyone who has been dumped, deceived, or demoted. It will also appeal to mermaid enthusiasts.

Blurb – The Coming of Arabella

On the day of her engagement party, an ex-mermaid’s life is disrupted by the unexpected arrival of another mermaid—a sister she has never known. Under normal circumstances, Barbara Davies would be overjoyed, but her special day is already wrought with tension. While Barbara is not the first mermaid from the Mediterranean kingdom to settle in small town Ontario, she has yet to reveal her origins to her fiancé. So, when Arabella, the gorgeous sister whose disturbing black eyes banished her to the island of Crete, saunters into her life, clutching the arm of Barbara’s discarded lover, a powder keg of emotion is released.

Relationships falter and careers stall as envy stirs in the hearts of the sisters. On the verge of meltdown after her fiancé leaves Canada for a teaching job in Vermont, Barbara flees to Arizona hoping for a reprieve. There, she finds solace at a retreat for ex-mermaids and a second chance at love with a charismatic preacher. As she contemplates a new life in the desert paradise of Sedona, shocking secrets emerge and tragedy strikes. A stronger and wiser Barbara rises up to face these new challenges and embrace the best parts of her mermaid heritage.
