Reflections on a booksigning; #romanticon2022 #writerslife

If you follow this blog, you know yesterday I posted a picture taken of me at this past weekend’s ROMANTICON 2022 held in Trumbull, CT.

Driving home early Sunday morning I had private time to reflect on a few things about the event, and myself.

First, if you know anything about me you know I am basically a hermit. I have friends – I’m not a social pariah, hahaha -but I tend I stay home a lot, work on my writing, take care of my hubby and dog, and see my daughter and her family. I don’t PEOPLE well. Truthfully, I am a loner/hermit/introvert as many writers are. But when we do an event like a book signing, we have to BE ON. By that I mean we have to smile, engage readers, and generally make ourselves liked.

This is hard for me. So hard. I’d never make a salesperson. I’d be fired the first day because I simply can not sell anything. I never want to be bothered by salespeople when I shop ( which isn’t often) so I wouldn’t want to impose myself on others if the shoe were on the other foot. Having to hawk my books and myself is so alien a concept to me, it’s a wonder I sell anything at all. Luckily, I have a following and am told I can be engaging when I try. Which isn’t often, but necessary when it is.

So.

Enough about me.

The event is put on by writer Kitty Berry and she and her amazing corps of volunteers did a fantastic job. Everything moved swimmingly, door prizes were given out to the joy of many, the food at the brunch was good and the check-in table moved smoothly along.

All in all, a very professionally run event and one which I will return to next year.

Not only because of the readers but my fellow authors as well.

As authors, we do something most of our friends and family don’t do. Many times they don’t want to hear about the trouble we are having with our characters, or that we can’t get our word counts in because of disruptions. The only people who can relate to those lamentations are other writers because they are suffering through the same issues. In essence, they walk the walk and talk the talk of books, characters, marketing, sales slumps, and best sellers’ lists. So seeing so many of my writing friends after 2 years of covid isolation and cancellations was….amazing.

Truly.

It was life-affirming and career motivating. Just to be in a room with 50+ other people who do what I do and know what I go through each and every day was simply…gratifying. The readers were the cherry on top of that beautiful cake.

So, I’m back in my writing cave until the next event/book signing. I think I have 4 more this year. 2023 already has 6 booked with the option to do 2 more at least.

I’ll need to practice my social skills until then…

Happy reading, peeps. get those Summer reading lists moving (hopefully with a book or 2 from me!)

A #99centsale, a Book signing, and a tired writer!

It is so hard for me to believe Thanksgiving ( in the US) is tomorrow! Where the heck did this month go? Or for that matter, this year?! With the birth of my first grandchild in September, the loss of my father-in-law two weeks ago, and the marriage of my nephew last weekend, I am one tired chickie! And just for giggles, let’s throw in the fact I’m doing NaNoWriMo again this year.

Yikes. I guess I’ll sleep in….well, I really don’t know because next month is pretty filled, too.

While I am decorating for the Christmas holidays starting tomorrow, I wanted to let you know about two events going on concurrently this week.

First, FIXING CHRISTMAS – A Dickens Holiday Romance ( Dorrit’s Diner) is on sale for only #99cents for one week. Amazon jumped the gun and started the sale yesterday, but for every other venue, it begins on Thanksgiving day. If you haven’t had a chance to read it yet, now is the perfect time to order it!

On Black Friday I will be signing books at the TOADSTOOL BOOKSHOP in Keene, NH from noon until 2 pm signing FIXING CHRISTMAS and all my other Holiday books:

So get your Holiday reading started – or buy some books as gifts for the romance lovers on your holiday gift list!

Books are a great gift anytime of year, but especially during the Holiday Season!

Happy Thanksgiving, peeps and hope to see many of you on Black Friday – also called Plaid Friday for those who shop local – at the TOADSTOOL! ~ peg

#RWA2019 #RWA19 Last days…

Friday was a whirlwind, let me tell you.

It started with a great workshop on writing Romantic Comedy – which is near and dear to me, as you all know, and how much we can learn about writing it from watching classic RomCom movies. Excellent stuff, peeps.

Than, it was on to the KENSINGTON book signing. I had copies of my Golden Quill Winner, CAN’T STAND THE HEAT and A SHOT AT LOVE.

The worker elves at Kensington made these gorgeous frames for us to display

and you can see where I placed mine in the picture above of the table. The room, let me tell you, was jampacked with readers when the doors opened at 11. I had to turn my hearing aid DOWN because the level of excitement was shooting through me at warp speed! I gave away all my books – signed! Such a great turnout. And it was nice to connect with fellow Lyrical writers Susan Mann , Kate Pearce, and Mary Ann Marlowe.

The rest of the day was spent at workshops, including a fabulous marketing class taught by the wonderful and uber smart and talented, Kilby Blades.

The evening ending with annual RITA AWARDS where romance authors are recognized for their writing. This night, history was made as the first and second black women EVER were awarded Ritas. It was a long time coming and these uber talented women richly deserved the honors.

I’m going to do one last post tomorrow, a wrap-up of sorts, of this year’s RWA experience for me, so you won’t want to miss that.

Until next time ~Peg
