Candy hearts Author Jana Richards

candyheart

Today I have the pleasure of introducing you to Jana Richards, author of CHILL OUT (A Candy Hearts Romance.) I love a story with an animal as one of the characters. Jana is sharing what her inspiration for her hero’s dog, Spike was.

Don’t forget to enter the WILDROSE PRESS RAFFLECOPTER at the end of this blog for a chance at a KINDLE FIRE.

Here’s Jana:

My Inspiration for Spike

In my contemporary romance, CHILL OUT, my hero Noah arrives at his friend’s cottage with his dog Spike in tow. Spike is a rather large dog, to say the least. He’s an English Mastiff, and according to Dog Breed Info, the male of this breed averages 30 inches (76 cm) in height, and about 160 pounds (72 kg), though a male Mastiff can exceed 200 pounds. That’s a lot of dog!

Fortunately, English Mastiffs are not aggressive and are known as Gentle Giants. But that doesn’t mean they’re pushovers. They’re natural guard dogs and are fiercely loyal to their families. They rarely bark, but if an intruder were to break into the house, he might find himself cornered by a two hundred pound Mastiff, or possibly being sat on by one!

Just how big is an English Mastiff? Check out this link to dozens of pictures of the breed. I’m especially fond of ones that show the dog with a pony – they’re the same size!

The inspiration for Spike came from my colleague Michelle’s dog Indigo, Indy for short. Indy comes to work with Michelle almost every day, and spends her day greeting staff, drooling and sleeping, not necessarily in that order. While not nearly as big as some Mastiffs can get, Indy is a powerful girl. Fortunately, she’s a well-behaved girl, and can be bribed with doggie treats to go wherever Michelle wants her to go.

Indigo

I borrowed a lot from real life for this story. Michelle rescued Indy from a shelter, and in my story Noah also rescued Spike when nobody else wanted him because of his size. He says he looked into Spikes eyes and saw a kindred spirit, which is what Michelle says about Indy. And the fact that Spike likes to sleep in his human’s bed, under the covers? That also comes from Michelle and Indy.

I decided I wanted an English Mastiff in my story because I wanted a dog that was hard to ignore. And let’s face it, that face just makes you smile, doesn’t it?

My only problem now is that the other dogs in my office – Huey, the poodle cross, Aero the pure-bred Standard poodle, and Abby the Pomeranian – want their own stories, too!

Are you a dog/pet lover? Tell me about your pet. Would you ever want a dog as big as Spike? What’s the biggest pet you’ve ever owned?

CHILL OUT

Blurb:

Renata Cabral needs to hide for the weekend. Her cousin’s Valentine’s Day wedding means she’ll face embarrassing questions from her large, extended family. Questions like “Why aren’t you married yet?”  Since the breakup of her last relationship, she’s not ready to answer that question. She invents a work-related excuse and escapes to a friend’s lakeside cottage.

Noah Brownlee has been hiding for two years. But now he’s ready to come home and mend his broken relationship with his brother. When a friend offers the use of his lakeside cottage, Noah arrives in the middle of a blizzard with his English Mastiff, only to find the place is already occupied. With her big brown eyes and quirky sense of humor, Renata stirs feelings he thought long dead.

As the blizzard rages, the candy hearts predict love. Can Valentine’s Day work its magic between them?

Excerpt:

Dylan wasn’t just my brother, he was my best friend, and in some ways, he was like a father. When our mother died, he petitioned the court to make him my legal guardian so I wouldn’t have to go into care. He made sure I studied, pushed me to apply to med school, helped me with expenses.”

“He sounds like a wonderful big brother.”

His lips curved in a sad smile and Renata’s heart ached for him. “He was, and I know he’s going to be an amazing father. I want this animosity between us to end. I want my brother back.” His voice cracked. “But I’m not sure he feels the same way. I said some ugly things…”

“Perhaps, with the baby coming, he wants to mend the rift between you as much as you do.” She hoped she was right.

“Maybe. I’ll find out tomorrow. I’m going to phone Dylan and try to arrange a meeting.”

“It’ll work out. You’ll see.”

He leaned toward her, the corners of his eyes wrinkling with his smile. “I appreciate the pep rally.”

“Well, I was a cheerleader in high school. Rah, Rah.”

He laughed softly, then cupped her face with his hand, his thumb idly stroking her cheek. Her breath hitched at his tender touch. “Thank you for making this easier for me, Renata.”

He leaned in and her heart pounded in anticipation of his kiss. When his lips touched hers, a firestorm of longing ignited inside her. She strained toward him, needing his kiss, needing to heal his pain. His lips parted against hers, and she opened her mouth eagerly, reveling in his taste as his tongue danced with hers. The world faded away, and nothing existed for her except this man and all the tenderness she felt for him. It felt so right to kiss him, so perfectly, completely right.

jana

When Jana Richards read her first romance novel, she immediately knew two things: she had to commit the stories running through her head to paper, and they had to end with a happily ever after. She also knew she’d found what she was meant to do. Since then she’s never met a romance genre she didn’t like. She writes contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and historical romance set in World War Two, in lengths ranging from short story to full length novel. Just for fun, she throws in generous helpings of humor, and the occasional dash of the paranormal. Her paranormal romantic suspense “Seeing Things” was a 2008 EPPIE finalist.

In her life away from writing, Jana is an accountant/admin assistant, a mother to two grown daughters, and a wife to her husband Warren. She enjoys golf, yoga, movies, concerts, travel and reading, not necessarily in that order. She and her husband live in Winnipeg, Canada with their Pug/Terrier cross Lou and several unnamed goldfish. She loves to hear from readers and can be reached through her website at www.janarichards.com

Why we love Christmas romance books.

I was in Target the other day doing a little Christmas shopping and I found myself – surprise surprise – in the  Book department. There were no fewer than 15 brand-new Christmas romance  novels from 15 different authors.  Was I surprised? Not really.  We all know romance sells… And a Christmas romance sells even better.

This got me to thinking: Why is it that romance readers love a Christmas romance?

In the purest sense,  Christmas is a joyous time. We all want to be happy, in love, be loved, and give love.  The basic Christmas romance novel uses that universal desire for love and amplifies it. How you ask? Well, I’m going to tell you.

Typically, a romance novel set during the Christmas season will involve a heroine who is just not feeling the love. The love of the season,  or the love of a good man.  Enter our hero. He, too, may not be feeling the love of the season. He isn’t looking for his soul-mate; doesn’t think Santa is going to hand deliver a  girl for him down the chimney and leave her under the tree. BUT. It’s Christmas after all. The time of miracles; the time of wishes being fulfilled.

When our hero and our heroine do meet, it may not be love at first sight, or even second. Possibly not third, either. Some intangible thing, though, will bring them together and when they do find their love ( usually on Christmas morning or under the mistletoe) then the story gets resolved, because Christmas is the time for love to wash away all the evil, all the hurt, all the pain of the year before it.

I will admit freely and unabashedly I am a total sap for a Christmas romance story. The Hallmark channel and Lifetime Movie Network were made especially for me ( or so I tell myself). Their 24 hour a day holiday movies and specials – all about some sort of love/romance as the theme surrounding the Christmas season are favorites with romance novel readers from every walk of life. Happily ever afters abound, and Santa comes on Christmas morning, bringing you exactly what you wanted and wished for (usually a hunky guy in Christmas boxers…but I digress and that’s for another blog post).

Yeah, I know it’s kinda sappy and syrupy and maybe even schmaltzy, but I don’t care. Neither  do the millions of others who support ( read: spend their money on!) this cottage holiday industry.

So, while I settle down  in front of my roaring fireplace where I’m all warm and comfy with new Nora Roberts’ CHRISTMAS WIH YOU book, after just finishing Jill Shalvis’  MERRY CHIRTSMAS BABY , I hope you can take an hour or two this week and read a new holiday romance or watch the Hallmark Channel and/or Lifetime Movie Network. After all, we deserve a break from shopping, wrapping, cooking and decorating, don’t we?

Yeah…we do!

My Candy Hearts title is 3 Wishes, releases on 2/8/16, and here’s a little sumthin’ sumthin’ about it.

Excerpt:

At about five minutes of ten I was almost ready to turn the Closed sign on the door when it opened. I heard Janie’s breath hitch and turned from where I was sweeping up. Staying open late is always a risk, with the thought thieves will invade at the end of the day.

If the guy standing at the door glancing around the shop was a thief, then Dio mio, I wanted to be robbed.

About six foot, his hair was the color of a deer’s pelt, with autumnal golds and browns shot together in a glorious patchwork that grazed the collar of his jacket and curled a little at the ends. He wore a faded brown bomber jacket over a shirt I couldn’t see, but he had shoulders almost as wide as my doorway. A pair of well-worn jeans covered his mile long legs, and the fabric on the stress points at his knees was practically white.

“We’re about to close,” I heard myself say. “Can I help you?”

It was at that moment he looked over at me.

His face could have been sculpted by Da Vinci or Michelangelo. A broad, smooth, forehead housed naturally arched eyebrows I knew some of my gay guy friends would have paid a fortune to have on their own faces. His cheeks were carved from marble, high, smooth and deep. And his mouth, mother-of-God, his mouth. Full, thick beautiful lips sat perfectly over a chin with a dent you could shove a button into and have it stay put.

“Sorry,” he said, those fabulous lips pulling up a little shyly at the corners. “I got stuck at work and couldn’t get here until now. I’ll be quick. Promise.”

So here’s the thing: the guy was gorgeous. But even if he’d looked like a frog with raw antipasto smothering his face, I would have dropped to my knees when he opened his mouth. Warm honey, a shot of raw whiskey, and a little hot puff of smoke wafted from his mouth like a fine and rare brandy being decanted.

Giving Thanks for so much…

One of the great things about being an Ameican ( and the list really is endless!) is the holiday we celebrate that is uniquley ours: Thanksgiving.

We all have individual reasons to be thankful, and if each person in America were asked, I’m sure each answer would be different. My Wild Rose Press sistah Angela Hayes is celebrating the month by having authors tell why they are thankful. I was one of the lucky ones  asked to share my thoughts and I’d like to expound on those here, today.

November Banner

First and foremost I am thankful to be loved by a remarkable family. I have been in love with the same man since the day I met him thirty-two years ago and that love has only grown stronger and richer every day. I am proud and blessed to have a daughter who is the total embodiment of all that is good in the world. The fact that these two remarkable people love me warms my heart daily.

I am thankful to live in a country where I can be anything or anyone I want to be, say anything I want to say without the threat of prosecution, and worship the God I desire without the fear or threat of persecution. Believe me, if you lived in other countries, you would know these freedoms do not exist.

Lastly, I am thankful God put the dream in me to be a writer. Writing brings joy and gladness to my heart on a daily basis, and again, if I didn’t live in America, I might be ale to write the kinds of stories I do and have them be seen by the populous.

So eat some turkey, have some pie, and visit with friends and families. And always remember to be thankful. It doesn’t have to be only on this day every year. You can and should be thankful every day of your life….just don’t eat pumpkin pie every day!

Here’s a little snippet from my debut romance novel SKATER’S WALTZ.

perf5.000x8.000.indd

When Tiffany declares her feelings for Cole, he’s anything but receptive…

Heat oozed from her body as she glowered at him. “And to think,” she said, glaring hard at his laughing face, her voice quiet and tight, “I fell hopelessly, endlessly in love with you that day. I should have known you’d turn out to be such a creep. What a waste my life has been, pining after you, waiting for you to notice me, longing after you with every breath. God, what a moron …”

Tiffany stopped. Mouth agape, eyes wide and clear, she stopped tugging on the towel and opened her hand in surrender.

Cole didn’t let go of her wrist. He couldn’t, not after what she’d just confessed. Her face had gone pale again, her lips turning to chalk. He dropped the ring back to its chain and saw it glinting in the light, lying over the small upsweep of her breasts made bare by their struggle. Breasts he suddenly felt an intense need to cup, kiss, and nuzzle.

He didn’t know how to respond. Her words were true; there was no doubt about it. No explanation necessary.

“Tiffany, I…don’t know what to say.”

With a jagged breath, she threw back her head. Choking on a sob, she told him, “You don’t have to say anything, Cole. Really.”

Something About Sexy

Welcome to the 115th week of My Sexy Saturday.

mysexySat

This week’s theme: Something About Sexy

This week’s theme can be anything from fun and quirky to dark and serious. We as authors all know that there is just something about writing these sexy books. We can’t put our finger on it, sometimes we can’t even define it but we know we wouldn’t do anything else. We write our sexy characters because we love to do so. We love our characters, we love that sexy can be what we define and we love to bring that idea of sexy to our readers. We love sexy and it shows. Still, these books have hot characters and an even hotter love story and we’d love for you to share your sexy snippet with us.

Sexy can be anything, such as romantic moments like walks on the beach, a home cooked meal or even in another galaxy. It could be two lovers here on Earth dreaming about the day where they go on a magical vacation to another planet. Or staying right here at one of those wonderful places we can find in our own world.

Sexy has nothing to do with looks or status or even wealth. It doesn’t demand perfection and it isn’t pretentious but it does make us want to read those books.

We know that everyone has their own idea of sexy and we all love sexy!

Here’s a little sexy sumthin’ sumthin‘ from my newest release FIRST IMPRESSIONS. Quentin has been dying to get his hands on Moira all day. The cramped confines of his truck don’t prevent him from giving in to his desire.

Featured Image -- 1345

Before starting the car, Quentin turned to her, took her in his arms, and gave her a quick, hard kiss that set them both back on their heels.

“I’ve been wanting to do that for hours,” he told her, smiling against her lips. He touched them again, this time softer, but no less potently. His hands slid around her neck, pulling her across the cab. Roomy as it was, Moira hit the steering wheel.

“Ouch.” She pulled back, laughing. “I think we’re a little too old and you’re a little too big to be making out in the front seat of a truck, Q.”

Grinning, he kissed her once more and said, “I’ll argue the first point, but not the second.” He turned the key and started the engine. “I’ll try to keep my hands to myself until we get home.”

Moira nestled next to him in the spacious cab, took his right arm and crossed it over her shoulders so she could snuggle closer to him. “Here. How’s this?”

He planted a swift kiss on her temple, his eyes never leaving the road, and said, “As good as it gets.”

Heating up the Ice

It’s Wednesday so it must be time for MFRWBookHooks! Click on the link at the bottom and check out some of the great MFRW authors – you may find your new favorite author when you do!!

mfrwlogo

Here’s a little sumthin’ sumthin/ from my first book, SKATER’S WALTZ.

Blurb:

Figure skater Tiffany Lennox is busy with rehearsals for an upcoming ice show when the only man she’s ever loved comes home after a two-year overseas stint. She needs him to see her for the woman she’s become and not the child he knew to ensure he stays home, this time, for good. With her.

For all his wanderlust and hunger for professional success, Cole Greer comes home wanting nothing more than to rest, relax and recover. He is delighted in being Tiffany’s hero and has a special place in his heart reserved for her. But faced with the oh-so-desirable woman she’s become, he starts questioning his determination to keep their relationship platonic.

When forced by the television network to go back on assignment, Cole – for the first time in his life – is torn between his career and his heart.

Cole and Tiffany generate enough heat between them to melt an ice arena…

Excerpt:

perf5.000x8.000.indd

She pulled her tights off and, naked, reached for her street clothes. “Why are you so quiet?”

“Just enjoying the view,” he said. She could hear the grin in his voice.

Her head whipped up and caught his gaze in the mirror. She hadn’t realized she could be seen from that angle. A slow smile spread across her face. “Well, let me get you a better one.” She came around the screen.

Cole’s eyes darkened.
“Is that better?”
“No. Come here.”
Obeying, she moved closer until she was within arm’s distance of him.
“Closer,” he commanded, his arms crossed over his chest.
When she took another step toward him, he yanked her down on his lap, and stifled her squeal with the heat of his mouth.

All sense of time and reason flew.

Our Sexy Love

Welcome to the 114th week of My Sexy Saturday.

mysexySat

This week’s theme: Our Sexy Love

The theme this week can mean anything from a couple who have been together a long time, even forever or it could be about a couple whose love is new and hot and very sexy. It could be about couples pulled apart only to find each other again, maybe even in another lifetime. These stories are hot and sexy and everything our readers want and expect from us. They are sexy and can happen anywhere, anytime or in any universe.

If your story has one or more of these fabulous moments with some very sexy, hot characters in a love that’s destined to last forever, please share them with us…share all those sexy moments that you have between your characters …remember every relationship is important!

Sexy can be anything, such as romantic moments like walks on the beach, a home cooked meal or even in another galaxy. It could be two lovers here on Earth dreaming about the day where they go on a magical vacation to another planet. Or staying right here at one of those wonderful places we can find in our own world.

Readers want to see those characters, the ones who can’t get enough of each other as well as ones who are fighting their way back to being part of the world once again. These are the types of characters they can’t forget, the one they want to take home and keep forever. Readers love the kisses, the looks or touch of each and every one of our characters.

Sexy has nothing to do with looks or status or even wealth. It doesn’t demand perfection and it isn’t pretentious but it does make us want to read those books.

We know that everyone has their own idea of sexy and we all love sexy! Click on the link below to find your next favorite Sexy author. But first……

here’s a snippet of sexy love from my newest romance novel FIRST IMPRESSIONS. Serena and Seamus have been married for almost 30 years, but the passion has never burned out for them…

Featured Image -- 1345

“How are you feeling, Dad?”

Seamus held up his bandaged arm. “My arm’s a little sore, but my pride’s worse. Still can’t believe the dog got me.”

Serena sat next to her husband and reached over to take his hand in hers. “Admit it, Seamus,” she said, laughter pulling at the corners of her mouth, “you’re not as fast as you used to be.”

“I’ll show you who’s fast.” He moved so quickly, Pat blinked and his mother was pulled into his father’s lap, his arms securely around her. Capturing her lips with his own, he gave her a resounding kiss that had her laughter bubbling through to the surface.

Food for Thought

Welcome to the MFRWBookHooksBlogHop.

mfrwlogo

Click on the link below to find your next favorite author. But first….

here’s a little snippet from my newest release FIRST IMPRESSIONS. A simple dinner between friends is never as simple as it seems…

Featured Image -- 1345

In the next instant, Pat’s stomach rumbled loud enough to be heard above the kitten’s deafening purrs.

Clarissa tried to contain her giggle so she wouldn’t startle the animal, but when Pat’s neck heated with a ruddy flare and he thrust his hands into his pockets, she couldn’t hold it in.

He squinted at her, and, with a menacing glare, pushed nearer to her. “You’re always quietly laughing at me,” he said, stopping so close she could feel his hot, moist breath on her face. “I can’t figure out why I want to be around someone who always laughs at me.”

“I know why,” she said, kissing the kitten again.

When his left eyebrow shot up his forehead, she answered. “It’s easy. Whenever we’re together, we’re usually eating. You’re hungry, so you want me to cook for you.”

His face went blank, and she couldn’t for the life of her discern what he was thinking. She could hear him breathing now, not only feel it, the air pushing out of him a tad faster than it had moments before. The flushed heat on his neck spread up his jaw. She could have melted to the floor when his eyes turned hot too, the lids hooded, so much so, Clarissa finally understood the meaning of a smoldering look.
