#L&SR #wednesdaybloggingchallenge I don’t JUST write, you know!

This week’s topic is Your Favorite Hobby and why.

Folks, this one wrote itself.

I was a kid in the 1960’s ( I know: I’m ollllllllllld!) and one of the fun-est things to do on craft day at school was decoupage.

Decoupage  (noun) the art or craft of decorating objects with paper cut-outs.

As a kid it was sososososo much fun acquiring and stocking up newspapers, magazines, comic books, even old catalogs, and cutting out pictures, items, images that I loved just so I could them glue them to things like shoe boxes, jewelry boxes, pictures frames, and give them as gifts. I was between the ages of 5 and 10, so in those days, these were the extent of my gift-giving persona.

Nowadays, I do better.

Nowadays, I decoupage old steamer trunks that I find at rummage sales, and in second hand stores.

I’ve decoupaged 5 trunks over the past 3 years and have 2  more waiting for me to find some free time. When they are complete, I give them away as gifts to people around me who ask. My daughter has 2, my BFF has one, and I’ve got the other 2. This one is sitting in my office behind the couch I use to take naps in when the words aren’t flowing as fast as I want them to.

You can see a cut out of my first book SKATER’S WALTZ on the top of this one! The book just celebrated it’s 4th book birthday on Monday and is on sale until 3.15 for just 99cents an ecopy. ( hee hee, shameless plug, sorry. Had to!)

This is the entire top of the picture above it and if you have really good eyes, you can see a cut out of my second book THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME. I’ll give you a hint – it’s to the right ( your right as you’re looking at this) of Judy Garland.

Anyway, self promo over.

A trunk usually takes me anywhere from 1-2 months to complete, depending on the amount of damage the trunk has when I acquire it. The longest I’ve ever taken is 4 months because I had a trunk with an internal removable shelf. Both the inside of the trunk and the shelf had to be repaired, then papered, then decoupaged. I did the internals first, then proceeded to the outside.

That trunk is my favorite to date and holds sososososo much stuff I can’t stand it!

So. That’s my hobby. What about you?

A new #bookrelease by #Author #Katie O’Sullivan, et al

Today is release day for one of my favorite authors ( and a bunch of her writing pals!) Katie O’Sullivan.

This multi-published, uber-talented writer is a one-click author or me whenever she has a new book releasing because they are always goodies, but I am also honored to call her a friend.

On the open-air stage in Times Square, Quinn MacDonald was making a very different resolution for the fast-approaching new year. As he stood there with a fake smile plastered on his face, listening to Wiz Khalifa spout on about some after-party, Quinn vowed he would never sing on stage in public again. No matter what the fucking studio executives said, they couldn’t make him do this. Rock stars don’t cry on national television, for fuck’s sake.

He felt raw. Exposed. Alone.

And the duet with Demi Lovato? Someone had to have planned that ahead of time without telling him a thing. There’s no such thing as spontaneous singing for television cameras. Certainly not on New Year’s Eve in Times Square. So let’s add feeling “used” into the mix.

He didn’t like it. It was… wrong.

Sure, he’d promote the album. It was part of the contract he signed. He owed that much to the memory of his friends, and to their families. But as far as Quinn was concerned, the music died in the hurricane along with the rest of his band.

So, this happened……

Over the weekend I spotted this on my twitter feed:


To say I was gobsmacked is an understatement!!! The entire list of winners is here but can I just tell you how amazing it feels to have won my devision in such a prestigious contest??!! There really aren’t words strong enough to let you know how I needed to hear and see something like this lately.

You see, I’ve been a bit down in the doldrums for a bit. I have no books scheduled to be released in 2019 ( after the 4 I had in 2018). And while I have two books up for consideration with my Wild Rose Press editor, and I’ve sent out a query to another publisher about a different work, by the time I hear if they are approved or not, and then all the publishing stuff that needs to be done to them gets started, I don’t foresee a book release this calendar year, and that has left me feeling just a bit more than depressed of late.

Hearing I won my division in this contest has gone a long way to pulling me out of that depression.

You all may have heard about what I’ve been calling #COPYGATE this week, or as romancelandia has titled it #COPYPASTECRIS about the insane plagiarism scandal befalling the romance publishing world right now. I won’t go into details because I don’t want to give this horrible human being one more ounce of attention, but if you follow Nora Roberts’s or Courtney Milan’s blogs, you’ve been hearing about it for the past week. At a time when I – and all the legitimate writers I know – are struggling to make a buck, having something this egregious happens wants to make you hang up your writing togs and say “F**k it!”

And I did, for about 24 hours.

Then, the reason I started writing romance to begin with came back to me. I never intended to get anything I’d written published, either traditionally or independently. I simply wrote because I loved doing so. I wrote for me – and still do. Not for sales, not for publishing houses, not for the book reading world. The fact that those entities have deemed me worthy and read my stuff is like  whipped cream and a bottle of maraschinos on top of your favorite cupcake. But the real reason I still do what I do is because I love it and can’t stop doing it. I’ve said before that if I’d never gotten published I would have been okay with that – and it’s still true.

So, I am now back to my normal ( Am I normal?) self and am writing away. Do I have the dates my editor is supposed to get back to me on my proposals listed on my calendar? You betcha. Am I obsessing about the outcome? Nah. I’m just writing away and making myself smile.

#L&SR #wednesdayBloggingchallenge 2.20.19 Mi library e su library…

The prompt for this week’s blog experience is What to read to learn about X. A little vague but I’m gonna take it to mean something to do with how we, as writers, do research. ( Fingers crossed I’m correct about this!)

If you’re a follower of mine you know that I approach everything in life as if it was a study because I have such a strong scientific background. I love the scientific method. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this, here’s the textbook definition:

sci·en·tif·ic meth·od

(noun) a method of procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses.
“criticism is the backbone of the scientific method”

 

Let’s be honest: most of us took a basic English class decades ago. I would bet I’m not the only one who can’t remember the appropriate use of a semicolon, or when to use ellipses. For the basics in grammar, sentence structure, and just plain word use, The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation is hands down the best one – and easiest one to understand – of all I’ve read.

 

Before I wrote romantic fiction I dabbled in short stories that were mostly about murders, murderers, and mysteries. Since I’m a nurse, there are a great deal of little tidbits I’ve picked up along my career about poisons, drug interactions, etc., and ways to cause someone’s death – all great info if you write about murder!  My favorite reference books for these are The MERCK MANUAL and the Nurse’s PDR ( Physician’s Drug Reference Guide). Both these little gems, when combined, can get those creative, murderous ( on the page only!) juices flowing.

           

 

One last series I think I should mention are the “Thesaurus” books by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi. These include the Emotional Thesaurus, The Negative and Positive trait Thesaures, and a few more about location, setting. All of these books are gold mines of knowledge for the writer. 

 

Those are my top five “research” books for now. I’ve got oodles more, but don’t want this blog piece to go on ad nauseum!

#ValentinesDay2019 What every #RomanceWriter knows….

Valentine’s day is the one day of the year the rest of the world realizes what we, as writers of romance, know every day: Love makes the world go around.

Wasn’t that a song? (Yup – and here it is : http://bit.ly/2GqHhdW )

I loved when I was in grade school and we were compelled by the teacher to give out little boxed Valentine cards to one another. Every kid in your class received one, that was the rule. No one was left out, not even the teacher. I remember thinking back then, wouldn’t it be a nicer world if everyone received a Valentine’s Day card every day of the year? If everyone was remembered and no one was left out? Wouldn’t the world just be a better place if everyone got to feel valued? Cared about? Thought of? I know I certainly felt that way when I opened my cards.

 

When I got older and the giving of cards was no longer required, I was sad. Not because I wasn’t receiving any cards (BTW, I wasn’t!) but more because that lesson of showing kindness and inclusion and love to everyone around you was no longer practiced. We were deemed old enough now to make our own decisions on whom to show our love to. I wasn’t the only girl – or boy – who wasn’t given a card or a rose or a chocolate bar on Valentine’s Day. While others found cards and letters shoved into their lockers, or stuffed animals with balloons delivered to their homerooms, those of us who received nothing would be sniggered at and whispered about because we stood out. I can remember what it felt like to feel unworthy; unliked; unloveable. A day devoted to love would morph into the polar opposite of its intended meaning for me.

I really think this was the impetus for me to write romance. I wanted to give people a Valentine card in the form of stories about love. I wanted to make people feel optimistic that one day they would get their own HEA; that everlasting love would find them; that there was someone, somewhere in the world who had their name stamped on a heart. Someone just for them.

 

As writers of romance we know the intricacies, the ins and outs, the torments and the ultimate elations of finding love. In its purest form, we write about hope. And I truly believe our readers feel hopeful when they read our books. Hopeful that if lasting love hasn’t found them yet, it will. Hopeful that if two characters can put side their differences and problems and realize they are better together than apart, than the reality of that happening to the reader is possible. Hopeful that love truly does make the a world better place. Some may think that’s a little schmaltzy, and maybe it is. But think of the alternative. Which would you like to believe? I know my choice.

Now, I can look back on those lonely Valentine Days of my teenaged years and be thankful because experiencing what it was like to be on the sidelines of feeling loved made me determined to instill in others a feeling of optimism. It forged in me a resolve to show everyone they are valued, worthy of love, and that they are seen. It proved to me that love truly does make the work go around. ( Cue the YOU-TUBE video again! Hee Hee)

 

So this Valentine’s Day I have a request. Don’t send a card or give candy only to that one person – or more – you love. Show someone who may be feeling unloved the same kindness and thought. Maybe you have an elderly neighbor who has no family, or whose family lives far away, and he/she is all alone on Valentine’s Day. Send them – or better yet, deliver to them – homemade cookies and a card. Maybe you have a food kitchen in your community that serves the homeless, or low-income residents. Have your kids make Valentine’s cards to be passed out with the daily meal. (I still love and recommend those boxed cards because they are so adorable!) Address a card to your mailperson and leave it in your mailbox for them to pickup when they make your delivery. Do the same with your garbage men, or any service industry people you come in contact with. Nursing home residents are members of a community that many times get overlooked and forgotten on Valentine’s Day. Again, a little boxed card and a Hershey’s kiss candy can go a long way in making someone’s day happier.

Everyone deserves to feel special and loved, and not just on the one day we collectively devote to it, but everyday. If we all start with that premise and then practice it, think about how happier people would be; how much nicer we would all be to one another; how much brighter our days would turn. How our world would be a better place.

#L&SR #WednesdayBlogging Challenge. At The Movies!

I have to admit this: I don’t go to the movies as much as I used to. There are dozens of reasons, but the main ones are I like watching a movie from the comfort of my own, silent home in my own comfortable reclining chair; I hate movie food; and the prices per movie ( 15.00 where I live) are – simply put – ridiculous and not worth the expense. I wasn’t always this way. Up until about 10 years ago I went to the movie theater every weekend. But that’s a topic for another day and blog.

Today’s prompt – Favorite Movies of all time and why – is a cinemaholics dream and nightmare rolled into one. How is it possible to choose from the thousands of flicks I’ve adored and watched over and over again? Well, I’ll try to whittle it down.

You may assume, because I write romance novels for a living, my favorite genre of movie would be RomComs or tearjerkers. Your assumption would be wrong. So wrong. I’m an action girl and I love a good shoot-em-up-bang-bang movie! I also  love a toe-tapping singalong musical and I’m a sucker for the fast paced Preston Sturgis-type black and white movies of the 1930’s and early 1040’s.

First, shoot-em-up-bang-bang favorites:

PREDATOR

– made when the former governor of California was at his action packed height. The reason I lovelovelove this movie is because it has one of the best lines ever written. Jesse – the Body – Ventura is shot and is bleeding. One of team says “you’re bleeding, man.” Jesse’s comeback? He spits and says, “I ain’t got time to bleed.”

DIE HARD ( the first movie) the movie that made Bruce Willis a household name in the action field.

The reason this movie is so near and dear to me is because it features one of my favorite tropes: the everyday man caught in an extraordinary circumstance. Some may argue that Willis’s character, John McClane, wasn’t an everyman, but a cop who knew how to fight his way out of a hairy situation. While that may be true, in reality, McClane was just a guy trying to get home for Christmas, not a cop who stumbled upon a nefarious plot that made his exwife a hostage. Alan Rickman was at his absolute villain best in this movie!

THE EQUALIZER

– while not an everyman, ex-CIA operative Denzel Washington is no longer in the business. What’s that old saying? You can take the man out of the CIA but you can’t take the CIA out of the man? This movies’s a favorite because DENZEL!!!

 

Second favorite genre of movies: Musicals

HIGH SOCIETY –

the musical version of the 1939 movie The Philadelphia Story which is one of my all time fav RomComs. (Remember those 1930-s fast paced ROMCOMS in black and white I said I loved?) HIGH SOCETY stars Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Grace Kelly, Louis Armstrong and Celeste Holm in a mad romp about a divorced couple, the heroines’ attempt to remarry, her father’s infidelity, an ex husband still in love, and the Newport Jazz festival all mixed together in one weekend of flirty fun and shenanigans. The reason this is one of my favorites? Well, show don’t tell applies to blogging, too, so gave a gander at this: HIGH SOCIETY

Next, we’ve got HolidayMovies and there really is only one that does it for me:
LOVE ACTUALLY.

 

Told from multiple viewpoints that all converge in the ending, this movie is simply put, perfect in every way. The main reason it’s one of my favorites is easy to see in this clip: To me you are perfect

ROBIN HOOD, PRINCE OF THIEVES 

– don’t judge me for this one because I’ve heard a gazillion times why this movie is so bad since Kevin Coster is the star. But it has one of the best lines ever written in a movie as a declaration of love and that’s the reason it’s one of my favorites. When Robin rescues Marion from the Sheriff ( Another fabulous role for Alan Rickman) she tells him she can’t believe he came back for her. His response? “I would die for you.” OOoooooooh. I die from delight every time I hear that line!

 

MY COUSIN VINNY

While I don’t like Joe Pesce as a rule, this was a role he was born to play. And it also starred Fred Gwynne  (Herman Munster!) and Marisa Tomei, who is the reason this is one of my fav movies. The scene where her biological clock is ticking is pure comedic genius! Tick Tock

Maybe Long and Short should have another Wednesday blog challenge so I can add more of my favs! 7 is a bit much for now but doesn’t begin to cover them all!!!!

“Hey, what’ve you got against old Susie? She was an integral part of our nerd squad in high school,” David said. “Right, Kel?”

When she didn’t reply, he glanced over at his old friend to see her frozen at her computer, all the color drained from her face. “Kel, what’s wrong?”

“I didn’t hear from Susie, but I didget a message from James Flynn,” she whispered.

David jumped to his feet and peeked over her shoulder at the computer screen. “Yummy James Flynn from Rye?”

Grace snickered, “Sounds like a sandwich. I’ll have a Yummy James Flynn on rye. Hold the mayo.”

Kelly and David swung their heads in unison to stare at her.

“What? It’s not my fault you two come from a town named after a bread.”

David shook his head mournfully and intoned, “Californians.”

“Native, baby.”  The blonde woman grinned playfully, “And don’t you New England Yankees forget it.”

“What does he say, Kel?” David asked with interest.

Kelly gulped, “He wanted to get in touch and maybe meet for a drink.”  She twisted her head to look up at David, her eyes huge on her pale face, “He lives here, David. In San Diego.”

My career has been a winding road. I worked in the business world for years, got my MLS and worked in a school library, and am now living my dream as an author. I love to read and write contemporary and fantasy romance. I live in Maryland, with my husband, who is my real-life romance hero. We both enjoy traveling to visit our far-flung family and friends, and spending time on the beach with an umbrella drink and a good book.

I’m a video star!! ( Not really, but read on…)

Starting Feb.1, 2019 I’m part of an exciting new blog with 22 other fabulous and talented writers called ROMANCE GEMS.
