Today’s topic prompt is: My favorite memory and why.
Easy Peasy. My favorite memory is tied to a Christmas gift 40 years in the making.
I don’t get a lot of gifts. I didn’t as a child and I haven’t as an adult. I tell you that so you’ll know how precious the gift I’m going to tell you about really is to me.
Obviously, I’m a girl. Duh. I was a child in the 1960’s a time when stereotypical gender roles were still very much in place. Boys got baseball cards, BBguns, and sports equipment for Christmas and birthday gifts. Girls got Barbies, Easy Bake Ovens, and board games like Mystery Date.
I hated all those girly-girly toys. Still do, to be truthful. Even back then I knew they were designed to keep girls in their places, hoping and dreaming of the perfect boy/man to come along and take care of us for eternity.
Gag me now. I so did not buy into that dream. But that’s a blog for another day. Today’s is about my favorite memory.
When I was eight I asked Santa ( that’s right. I still believed in Santa at 8. Still do, in fact.) for a toy I’d seen advertised on Saturday mornings during the cartoon hours. It was aimed at the boy buying market but I didn’t care. I asked Santa that year for Rock’em Sock’em robots!
Lordy, I wanted that toy!!! I said a prayer every night that Santa would leave it for me. I was extra good around the house, doing my chores and even doing things I wasn’t asked to do just to score some brownie points with Old St. Nick.
Christmas morning came and….no robots. I think I opened a new outfit or two for the Barbie doll he’d brought me the year before – the one I NEVER played with, and some Barbie coloring books.
Devastated is too tame for how I felt. My mother asked me why I was so pissed ( and yes, she did say it like that to an 8 year old. Is it any wonder I am the way I am today?) I told her I’d asked Santa for Rock’em Sock’em Robots and couldn’t understand why I didn’t get it. I’d been good, did well in school, went to church. Did everything I was told and supposed to do.
Her explanation was very telling. She shrugged, took a puff of her cigarette and said, “‘Cause you’re a girl, not a boy. Santa doesn’t give boy toys to girls or girl toys to boys. That’s not right.”
See? Telling.
Now, you’re probably wondering why I told you that story. Stick with me and you’ll understand why.
Flash forward 48 years. I’m sitting at dinner with my entire in-law family a few days before Christmas and we go around the table telling stories about Christmas’s of the past. My father-in-law asks me what the best gift I ever got was. I told him, instead, about the Rock’em Sock’em Robots debacle and how much I’d really wanted that toy and how upset I’d been when I didn’t get it. On to the next person for another story.
Christmas morning comes and we are spending it with my in-laws. I wake up and we all start to unwrap gifts. My husband hands me a huge box wrapped with a big red bow and a tag that said, “to Peg, from Santa”. Since I hadn’t asked for anything that year, I was in a quandary about what it could be. When I opened it I started bawling my eyes out. Yup – you guessed it. He’d given me the toy I’d always wanted. Apparently, after hearing the story I’d told a few nights before, he’d sent my brother-in-law to Toys R Us with instructions to get it for me.
Is it any wonder I love this man and have for over 30+ years?

I’m not gonna lie….I read my book reviews.
Many authors will tell you they never do because they don’t want to hear anything negative about the book, or that it makes them uncomfortable, or anxious or ( insert your own descriptor).
Not me.
I read every single, friggin, review I find, especially those from people I don’t know. You kind of expect the people you know to say something nice about your book. But it’s the ones I’ve never met, who don’t know me from Eve, who when they take time to write something about one of my books, I sit up and take notice. I’m not arrogant enough to think my words will inspire, entertain, and bring happiness into every single reader’s lives. It’s my hope, but not my reality, peeps, heehee.
What I always find intriguing though, is when one book has polarizing reviews – both ends of the spectrum from 5 stars to 1.
Let me e’splain….
This was a recent review from a very famous author I know through a publisher connection. We have never met, but I thoroughly enjoy reading her books and she is a one-click author for me. For TODAY, TOMORROW, ALWAYS this is her review, up on Amazon:

The writing prompt for one of the other blogs I write for – The Romance Gems for the month of January 2020 is WHAT’S NEXT. For the purposes of that blog it can be anything to do with our lives, travels, what we’re writing…really anything that’s going to make 2020 a memorable year.
My blog post for Romance Gems went up this week and it was a personal story you can read here: RGBlog.
But today I want to talk about what’s next for me on a professional level.
In 2019 I had 3 new books released. DIRTY DAMSELS – a DotComGirls book , was released in July by Limitless Publishers ( who dropped me right after the book was out!)
TODAY, TOMORROW, ALWAYS (Book 2 in A Match Made in Heaven) came out December from Wild Rose Press,
and IT’S A TRUST THING -my very first indie work came out in November. It was originally book 2 in the DotComGirls series, but when Limitless said “no” I decided to publish it on my own.
For 2020 I’ve got a bunch of stuff on my writing plate.
on January 13, A PRIDE OF BROTHERS: RICK released from the WRP. It’s my first published Romantic Suspense Lite and I’m thrilled it’s the first in a 3 book series.
I’ve just contracted for a summer release of a Sweet Romance titled VANILLA WITH A TWIST for the Wild Rose Press. This will be an ongoing listing of books, ala the Deerbourne Inn series, about summer, ice cream, and romance. Yay! I’ll be posting about this during the year with release dates, covers, etc.
I’ve just finished the third Match Made in Heaven book, BAKED WITH LOVE and that will be off to my editor within the month for review. Hopefully it will be released by Christmas.
I’m also writing the third DotComGirls book, WOKE and I hope to release it independently by the summer.
In addition to all that I’ve got Book 2 in A PRIDE OF BROTHERS:DYLAN mapped out. Dylan Keane is a cross between MacGyver and Roarke. I’m so in love with him it’s ridiculous!!
So, 2020 looks like it’ll be a busy and productive year for my writing career. Good thing I’m retired, right? Heehee

Three weeks in, peeps! Yay. Today’s topic is one I struggled a bit with: New Hobby I’m trying or would like to try.
Most of the hobbies I currently have all involve some use of my creative brain. I love refurbishing and decoupaging old steamer trunks; I’m a wiz at scrapbooking; I paint; I design greeting cards, and I embroider, knit, crochet and do needlepoint.
That’s a whole heck of a lot right there because there are only 24 hours in a day!
One thing I’ve always wanted to try, though, is quilting.
I love a good looking quilt. A trip through Amish country decades ago started my love affair and appreciation with hand-sticked quilting.
It’s not easy, not by a long short and I think you have to be good in math ( which I’m not) in order to have all the little pieces and squares the same size, and be able to make sure the pattern fits properly together. Plus, it’s takes time – a lot of time – to make one and I’m the type of gal who, once she starts a project, get’s a tad obsessed with finishing it. I know this would lead me down a rabbit hole of time management problems with regards to my writing schedule.
But it sure would be satisfying to know that the quilt/comforter covering me and hubby at night was made by my own two hands, so maybe….

It’s no secret if you follow my blog that I’ve got a brand new series starting on Monday, 1.13.20 titled A PRIDE OF BROTHERS: RICK. It’s a new romantic suspense trilogy about a private eye firm run by brothers ( hence, the name. Heehee)
