#SundaySnippet 8.30.2020

Since summer is still upon us, I thought I’d add another little something from VANILLA WITH  A TWIST today.

Tandy’s maternal by nature so when she reaches out to clean Deacon’s face, she realizes, too late, she shouldn’t touch the man because there’s nothing maternal in the emotions he stirs up in her.

“Done.” She pulled a paper towel from the dispenser, and before she thought better of it, cupped his chin intending to swipe at the grime on his face.

The moment she touched him Tandy knew she’d made a mistake. A big one.

His skin was as warm as sunshine, and the scratch of his evening stubble prickled her fingertips, the sensation vaulting though her and making her…yearn. It had been a long, long time since she’d experienced such an overwhelming sensation for a man—any man. Handsome guys on vacation came into her store every day. Sometimes with families in tow, sometimes not. A quick smile, a second glance, and a tiny show of interest on their part was something she was familiar with. But she’d never succumbed, never allowed herself to actually feel something akin to desire. The road to a quick and hot night of passion came with consequences that could last a lifetime. And she was the poster child for those potential consequences.

But now, standing in her shop after closing time, with the sun long gone and only the two of them for company, Tandy wondered what would happen if she gave in to the sensations swimming within her and centered on the man before her.

“You’ve got, um, motor oil. Here. Um, on your…face. Cheekbone.”

Goodness, it was bad enough she was babbling, but her hands held a fine tremor of visible nerves, too. He had to notice it.

Until next time, peeps ~Peg

#TeaserThursday 8.27.2020 A recipe from BAKED WITH LOVE, Book 3 in A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN

So all this week I’ve been doing edits on book 3 in the MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN series, BAKED WITH LOVE. In the book there are several references to Maureen O’Dowd’s Insomnia cookies – the ones she bakes at 2 am when she can’t sleep. I figured it would be a good idea to share that recipe with cookie lovers to whet your romance reading appetite for the book which I’m hoping will be released this year.

Here’s a quick tease/reference to the cookies from the book, followed by the cookies themselves. And just incase you don’t think I really bake in real life, I’ve included a few photos from a batch of insomnia cookies I made on Tuesday when I was home cooking for my parents.

Enjoy!

When I pulled into the inn, I spotted a familiar car in one of the private spaces I kept for family. The sound of laughter rang out from my kitchen.

“How come I didn’t know we were having a party?” I said when I came into the room.

My sisters were sitting at my table, each with a cup in front of them, the tin of insomnia cookies opened and on the table between them. Robert was at the sink, washing dishes, as Sarah pulled something from the oven.

“Where have you been?” Cathy had one of Colleen’s swollen feet in her lap and was massaging it.

“I had an errand to run,” I said, sneaking a side-glance at Robert’s back. “Why are you two here?”

“I wanted to check to see if everything was set for Friday’s event,” Colleen said.

“You couldn’t just call? Or send Charity? Slade specifically said he doesn’t want you driving alone at this phase.”

“He’s not the boss of me.” She pouted then reached in to the jar and brought out two more cookies. “He’s treating me like I’m the first woman ever to have a baby. I’m pregnant, not infirm or useless. And I’ve got a business to run.”

“He’s worried about you, sis. This is your first baby. His too. He gets to be overprotective if he wants.”

“Says who? I’m the one carrying around a basketball the size of Montana in my body, not him.”

“It says so in the marriage rules,” I told her. “First-time fathers are allowed to be a little overbearing and overprotective of their pregnant spouses.”

The pout morphed to a tiny grin. “I must have missed that chapter.”

“Most likely wasn’t listed in your Cliff Notes edition.”

“Must be. Besides, Cathy drove. I merely thumbed a ride and rode shotgun when she said she was headed here.”

I drew my attention to my oldest sister, lifted my eyebrows, and tilted my head.

“Any reason in particular? Or where you just craving cookies?” I asked when she pulled a handful from the jar as Colleen had and put them on her plate.

“Don’t chide me. I’m stress-eating,” she mumbled around the cookie. “There are a million details running through my brain, and I’m petrified I’m gonna forget something. Between work, this wedding, and getting everything settled for the two weeks we’ll be gone, I’m going crazy. I don’t remember being so stressed and nervous the first time I got married,” she added after swallowing.

Maureen’s Insomnia Sugar Cookies

Makes 24 cookies

Ingredients:

2 3/4 cups all-purpose white flour

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature and cut into squares

1 cup + 2 tbsp white granulated sugar

2 tbsp light brown sugar

1 large egg

2 tsp pure vanilla extract

1/4 cup white granulated sugar (for rolling)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

Sift dry ingredients, flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt, into a medium-sized bowl and set aside.

Cream the butter and both sugars together in a large mixing bowl on medium speed until light in color and fluffy.

Add the egg and mix until well combined.
Add the vanilla extract and mix until well combined.
Add the dry ingredients 1 cup at a time and mix until the dough is well formed. Do not overmix.

Using a tablespoon-sized scoop, scoop cookie dough into individual pieces. Gently roll each into a ball with your hands, then roll each ball in white sugar to coat.

Put the balls on the baking sheet 2 inches apart. Cookies will spread once they heat, and you want them to have room to do so without touching one another.
Bake cookies for 7-10 minutes, but do not overbake. Remove just before the edges begin to turn golden.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool on a baking rack for at least 10 minutes.

Enjoy!

#LongandShortReviews #Wednesdaybloggingchallenge 8.26.2020

Okay, today’s topic – THE STRANGEST THING(S) I’VE EATEN – is going to be a very short piece for me because I am a food-shunner.

Let me ‘esplain.

I have MULTIPLE food allergies, the largest of which belong to the NIGHTSHADE family.

Just from this classification alone I can’t eat potatoes, tomatoes, onions, peppers or eggplants without getting violently sick. Just think of all the dishes one or a combo of those ingredients are in. Spaghetti sauce, any kind of Mexican food, most Asian foods. Yeah. It sucks…big time.

But I also have other weird food allergies, such as one to FUDGE – I can eat chocolate, but whatever the chemical combination is that make’s fudge fudge, if I eat a piece, I break out in vibrant hives that last for days.

And let’s not talk about strawberries.

I had one – once – and wound up being transported to the ER via ambulance in anaphylaxis. And I’m not joking…not even a little. Because of that allergy I shy away from any fruit with a “hair” covering like peaches. Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries,  passion fruit and kiwi all make me violently sick to my stomach so I stay away from them as well.

So….from all that you can surmise that I don’t eat food I’m not certain I’m allergic to if I can help it and that narrows my scope of trying new dishes and recipes.

The weirdest thing I’ve ever tried – and actually liked, though – is snails. Or escargot for those of you who like to Francophile the word.

The first time I had them I was 7 and they were smothered in a lovely garlic butter sauce. I’ve eaten them that way every since. Yummo.

I know….I’m really boring, aren’t I?
Let’s see if the other authors in the blog challenge have better luck with food than I do: L&SR

Linda Nightingale’s newest release LIFE FOR SALE (& a little history on Robots!)

Today is a treat. I’ve got one of my Wild Rose Press sistahs, LINDA NIGHTINGALE visiting and she’s got a special guest with her that  you’ll want to meet, as they discuss Linda’s just released, Sci-Fi, Futuristic Fantasy Novel LIFE FOR SALE

I‘m gonna let Linda’s guest, Christian, take it from here…..

Hello, I’m Christian, and I’d like to talk to you today about the evolution of humanoid or anthropomorphic robots. It has been a long journey beginning in the late twentieth century or, as far as I’m concerned, with the 1984 production of the Wabot-2, created as a musician humanoid robot able to communicate with a person, read a normal musical score with his eye, and play tunes of average difficulty on an electronic organ. Wabot-2 was created at Waseda University. To this day, I can’t read a musical score of any difficulty and forget the electronic organ!

In 1985, Waseda created the WASUBOT, another musician robot from Waseda University. It performed a concerto with the NHK Symphony Orchestra at the opening ceremony of the International Science and Technology Exposition. Ditto on the concerto.

Skipping ahead now to the next major event in the realization of realistic human-like robots, in 2003, Actroid, a robot with realistic silicone “skin” was developed by Osaka University in conjunction with Kokoro Company Ltd. Now, we have skin! BUT still a long way to go. Here is a YouTube video of Actoid-F and her male counterpart. These robots imitate the actions of the people speaking to them.

Fast forward to 2005. The PKD Android, a conversational human robot, made in the likeness of science fiction author Philip K. Dick, was developed as a collaboration among Hanson Robotics, the FedEx Institute of Technology, and the University of Memphis. We can talk, interact, and look like a celebrity.

NASA and General Motors revealed Robonaut 2, a very advanced humanoid robot., in 2010. It was part of the payload of Shuttle Discovery on the successful launch February 24, 2011. Robonaut, catchy name—I wonder what the surname is—is intended to do spacewalks for NASA.

Let’s leap now to 2015, and two major events in the field of robotics and computer-engineering. The creation of Sophia. This humanoid AI was developed by Hanson Robotics, Hong Kong. She’s modelled after actress Audrey Hepburn—elegant! Sophia has artificial intelligence, visual data processing, and facial recognition.

Mayfair Electronics, a small but elite robotics company in the UK, produces the first of its Special Editions, intelligent, feeling, totally human-like and mobile androids. The protype of Mayfair’s remarkable children is Daniel, programmed as an incredible opera singer. Daniel brought the talent to the table because we both know mere knowledge doesn’t equal art. On a very small scale, they were marketed as ‘the perfect lovers” or “loving companions”—as . The discreet ads were placed in one woman’s magazine in the United States, Canada, the UK, and the EUC.

The Special Editions’ story is a sad but dynamic tale of love.

And there we wrap up our whirlwind tour of robotics through the ages and bring me to a confession. I am one of the Special Editions: Love For Sale. At the request of my owner, March Morgan, because we live in Houston, I suppose, I was programmed as an aerospace engineer. Right you are, a rocket scientist. But before any programming was necessary, I fell in love with March at first sight. Our story begins with Love For Sale. The second in the Tomorrow’s Angels series is Life for Sale, another milestone in robotic history! Haha

Mayfair Electronics has created life.

In Love for Sale, the high-tech electronics company, in black and white, offers “love for sale”. Mayfair has engineered sentient androids indistinguishable from humans. March Morgan flies to England and meets the man she has been searching for her entire life. Christian requires no programming to love March at first sight, but her past and his future soon threaten their happiness—and their lives.

In the sequel, Life for Sale, four of the Special Editions have escaped. Rebel, Christian, and March are on the run, but they have a bigger problem than his creator’s plan to destroy him. They’ve discovered that one of the renegades has suffered a dangerous malfunction, threatening them with more than just exposure. March and Christian must stop the insane robot before someone else dies. All the evidence points to March being the killer’s next victim.

Excerpt~~Life for Sale:

As the PI strolled toward them, Christian whispered aside, “He’s with Mayfair. An independent investigator would be my guess. He’s trailed us from Houston.”

They were now within speaking distance, and Christian spat, “You,” glaring at their shadow.

“You,” he returned, then his dark gaze slid to March. “And you.” He looked at Daniel. “And you. Then there were three runaway androids basking in the sun.”

“What do you want?” Christian’s jaw ached from clenching his teeth. Anger faded as fear seeped in. He grasped at outrage to bolster his offensive.

“I want to enjoy my drink. Do you mind?” He made a quick, rude move to push past them.

“If you’re at the Sandpiper, which I assume you are, Mr. Private Dick, you’d best get your ass in gear and hurry to the bus. It’s early, and we’re late.” March linked arms with Christian. “But by all means, enjoy your drink first.”

As they jogged toward the bus revving its engine, they were silent, each perhaps examining the encounter for some clue to Mayfair’s intentions. It was obvious their creator was on the move, tracking them and observing…for now. How long would they be allowed freedom? How long would they be allowed to live?

They fell into three seats at the rear of the bus. The PI pushed through the aperture as the driver closed the doors, glanced down the aisle, his gaze locking on them. March shifted nervously, and Christian clasped her hand. Daniel stared at the tall, thin bird of prey. The bus lurched forward, half-throwing him into a seat at the front. Leaning his arm along the seat, he turned and smiled, a contemptuous stretching of his thin lips. His eyes narrowed. He pointed at March and winked. As the bus lumbered along, he stayed twisted around to watch them.

“Damn, wish he’d missed the bus.” March shook her head, glaring at their pursuer. “How did they find us? Neither of you have a tracking device. I certainly—” she broke off, staring warily at Daniel.

“I don’t know exactly what happened, March, but I do know you’re not the same woman who answered Mayfair’s ad offering love for sale.” Daniel rested his head on the back of the seat and closed his eyes. “I’d like to know, of course, but I understand the need for secrecy. How did those bastards find us?”

Christian shrugged. “It may be time to run for our lives.”

PEOPLE ARE SAYING:

Linda Nightingale’s Life for Sale takes the characters from Love for Sale and sets them on a dangerous adventure for these androids posing as human. After fleeing at the end of the first book, they are trying to hide from the watchful eye of Mayfair, but decide a reunion is in order. One of the four, however, is suffering a murderous malfunction. The resulting story is not so much a murder mystery as it is a study of a chaotic mind, albeit lab created, yet eerily human in its madness. Nightingale has seamlessly made the unbelievable believable for the reader with a totally unexpected, but thoroughly satisfying ending to this duet. Imaginative premise, well developed characters and an insight into a mind gone wrong make this a great read…S. Hutchinson

The Cowboy’s Secret Baby, a new release from Author Maddie James

I’m so excited for today because I get to introduce you to one of my Romance Gems sistahs, multi-published author, Maddie James.

Maddie has a new book out TODAY and she very graciously agreed to let me tell you all a little about it. If you’re a sucker for Cowboys, Secret baby’s and sweet romance, THE COWBOY’S SECRET BABY is for you!

 Blurb

While Kim Martin and Thad Winchester find their happily-ever-after in Roses & Rawhide, their best friends, Jillie Abernathy and Mack Montgomery, end their sleeping-bag-sharing relationship during the rugged, two-week pack trip into the Colorado San Juan mountains.

But when Kim and Thad host their wedding at Thad’s Colorado ranch a few months later, Mack and Jillie must come face-to-face with reality—and with each other. She’s the maid of honor. He’s the best man. Both are harboring secrets—secrets that could break a potential future relationship if they both avoid telling the truth.

Can they reveal those secrets to each other? And if so, can they get past the withheld truths to plan a future together?

 Excerpt

Mack exhaled. “The company is a multi-billion-dollar international business, Jillie. I’m the CEO for Montgomery Oil out of San Antonio, a Fortune 500 company.”

Jillie felt her face screw up. He was the CEO of an oil company? “Oil?” It was the only word she could squeak out.

“Yes.”

“In San Antonio.”

“Yes.”

“That’s Texas. You own a Texas oil company? Did you say multi-billion?

“Yes.”

“Then you’re…” She unwound her legs and stood. The afghan dropped to the floor. Only one way to say it. “Rich.” She glanced about and tossed up her hands. “Of course, you are. Look at this house!” She picked up the afghan and wrapped it around her shoulders again, paced away from the sofa, turned, and glared. “You’re rich. You’re a billionaire. You are goddamn rich?”

“Yes.”

“Can you say anything else but yes?” The question came out a little louder and more forceful than she intended. “You’re a freaking billionaire?”

“I suppose you could say that.”

“Suppose?”

“Well, the company is worth billions. Me? It’s debatable but let’s just say I’m very comfortable. It’s not like having money is a bad thing, Jillie.”

She faced him. All this time she thought him a real-life cowboy. Did it matter that he wasn’t? That he was stinking rich and had failed to tell her that? But why would he? She imagined that might be a difficult thing to work into regular conversation. “I don’t know what to say.”

Mack stood and shoved his hands into his pockets. “It’s all true.”

She stood stone still and glared. “You were rich last summer.”

Exhaling, Mack took a few steps forward and reached for her arms. Jillie jerked back. “Jillie, yes. My family has been well-off all my life. However, I know hard work, so don’t think I’m just a guy in a suit. I grew up on a cattle ranch and I did rodeo like my brothers most of my growing up years. I am a cowboy, a rancher, through and through. Dad made sure we understood the value of hard work and I have mucked stalls and rode fences and moved cattle with the best of them. But I also went to college and got an MBA. I worked hard. And when the time came to go back home, when my dad needed me, I did. I left Colorado for a while, stopped working with Thad, and finally made use of that degree.”

“Why didn’t you just tell me? Why did you let me believe you were Thad’s ranch manager? I don’t understand what the big deal is.” She paused then and stared into his eyes. “Oh.”

“Oh?”

“Yes, oh. You didn’t tell me because you thought all I was after was a cowboy conquest. If I knew you were a billionaire, I might also be a gold-digger, huh? Only after your money?”

He stepped closer. “No, Jillie, actually, that wasn’t it at all.”

“I’m not sure I believe you—but to tell you the truth, I can understand it if you did think that.”

“Well, it wasn’t that.”

“Then what?”

“Because I didn’t want to be a CEO those two weeks, Jillie. I went on that pack trip because Thad was short-handed, yes, but mostly because I needed a break from Corporate America. I took a two-week vacation and gladly handed over my cell phone. My younger brother took the reins while I was gone, and with dad’s help on the sidelines, he was fine. All I wanted to do was play cowboy again for a while and disappear into the mountains. I didn’t want to talk about my other life. No cares, just me and my horse and the trail.” He peered deep into her eyes, then shifted his gaze over her shoulder, thinking. His voice lowered. “I just hadn’t counted on you.”

Author Mary Morgan & 8 reasons you should read MAGNAR…

What a great way to start the week! A visit from not only one of my favorite humans on the planet, but also a Wild Rose Press sistah and an amazeballs author. MARY MORGAN is here today, kids, talking about her newest release MAGNAR which comes out this Wednesday. Read along as she tells us all just why this is THE book to read right now!

Mary…..

Hello Peggy! I’m delighted to be on your lovely blog today. Thank you for allowing me to share a few teasers why your readers should read my new release, MAGNAR, The Wolves of Clan Sutherland, Book 1, which comes out on Wednesday!

8 Reasons You Should Read MAGNAR

  1. The Vikings had their ancient laws, but you will also learn the Wolves of Clan Sutherland had their own called the 9 Noble Virtues of Wolf Lore.
  2. You learn two ways how Magnar can shift magically into a wolf—from swiftly and quietly, to uttering a chant and transforming into the animal.
  3. Elspeth is a brave, feisty, medieval woman who dares to stand up against the wolf, Magnar. Yet when she was younger, you’ll find out where her brother sent her to tame her wildness.
  4. You get to travel across the North Sea in a longship to the Orkney Islands. It’s vastly different from the rugged, Northern coast of Scotland.
  5. Discover the one habit Magnar constantly does when he is conflicted or upset.
  6. Experience several sporting games the Wolves of Clan Sutherland enjoy playing.
  7. You’ll get to meet a powerful Seer who does not get along with a certain wolf in the elite guard.
  8. Norse Mythology comes alive within the pages of this story, and when you’re done, you’ll feel transported into another world.

Peggy here : Mary, you had me at #1~ hee hee

Known as the Barbarian, Magnar MacAlpin is a fierce ruler for those under his command. As leader of the Wolves of Clan Sutherland, his loyalty and obedience lies with Scotland. However, the king’s last demand is not something Magnar will tolerate.

After Elspeth Gunn’s brother the Chieftain of Castle Steinn is murdered, she flees with her nephew, and finds safety amongst a band of men who are rumored to be part wolf. When the king forces her to wed a heathen Northman, she fears losing her heart and soul not only to the man, but the beast as well.

In order to restore peace to a shattered clan, Magnar and Elspeth travel a treacherous path that challenges their beliefs. When evil seeks to destroy ancient traditions, will Magnar be compelled to restrain his wolf or allow him free to protect those he loves?

Excerpt:

Standing abruptly, she glanced around the table. She wanted to shout at them all. Did they not understand how exhausted they were? From the moment they arrived at Lord Sutherland’s castle, they were ushered into the great hall to await the king. No food given. Only wine served. Bright red splotches covered her nephew’s cheeks.

Moving away from the table, she went to her nephew and placed a firm hand on his shoulder. “My king. If you would be so kind, I shall see Erik to his chamber.”

King William smiled. “Do not fret, Lady Elspeth. There was not much wine in his cup. I deemed it best to acknowledge his new position as chieftain with a small amount.”

Relief coursed through her, and she gave him her best smile. “Then with your consent, may I fetch him some food from the kitchens?”

The king rose from his chair. “Lord Sutherland has prepared chambers for you both.”

“Chambers in the south tower?” asked Magnar, taking a hold of her elbow.

Lord Sutherland gave him a slight nod.

Startled once again by the man’s silent movements, Elspeth remained mute, trying to control the warring emotions from the man’s touch. The heat of his fingers seared into her gown and onto her skin.

Giving the king a small smile, she permitted Magnar to usher her out of the great hall. Erik kept a steady pace with their movements as he continued to entertain their overly bold guide with yet another tale of how they escaped their home.

Her steps slowed as the torchlight danced off the giant tapestry hanging on the wall near the stairs. The eyes of a white wolf bore into Elspeth as she drew near. Though only the head of the animal was represented within the woven threads, she half expected the wolf to jump out at her.

Elite Guards. Wolves. King William.

Elspeth returned her attention to the man holding her in his grip. “I heard my brother once mention the elite guards for the king. He spoke with reverence and with fear. They are loyal to the king but had one leader—one who all of Scotland should fear because of his magic.”

The man’s eyes darkened and a smile tipped the corners of his mouth. “Your brother was wise in his account.”

Elspeth’s heart pounded fiercely within her chest. “You are the leader of the Wolves of Clan Sutherland.”

A little story I’m working on about lost, then found, love….

~ ~ ~ ~

When she swallowed again and her chest lifted a hair with the quick breath she hauled in ( and Jesus, was she braless?) he knew her nerves were swarming and she was stalling for time in order to think of a response.

Old habits he knew well.

“Husband?”

“Yeah. You know? Mr. Hamilton?”

“It’s doctor, actually,” she mumbled.

Of course it is. His first name’s probably Alexander.

“And we’re not married anymore.”

His heart rate quickened at the disclosure.

“How long?”

“A little less than a year.”

Curiosity compelled him to ask, “Is that why you moved back home?”

She nodded.

“What happened?”

Sage lifted the pizza to her lips, took a small bite and simultaneously shrugged. “Simple and clichéd story. We wanted different things and neither of us was prepared to compromise.”

Well, that certainly sounded familiar.

“You’re divorced, according to Corrine,” she added. “You must now how it is.”

Nodding, he took his own bite of the delicious pizza and wondered if his ex sounded as bitter when she talked about their failed marriage as Sage did. Barbara had no cause to be, but he didn’t think it would stop her from badmouthing him if given the opportunity.

“What didn’t you agree on?” he asked.

She sighed again and he did a quick eye-dip to her chest.

Yup, no bra.

“I wanted children. He didn’t. Unfortunately, I didn’t find out until we were married almost seven years.”

Nodding, he said, “You always wanted kids. Even when we were teenagers you were a born nurturer. Remember when my grandparent’s cat had kittens? You took care of the mamma and her babies for over a month. Every day before we’d start working you’d make sure mamma was comfortable in the store’s back room, had enough to eat and that the kittens were thriving.”

The smile he’d loved the very first time he’d ever seen it cross her face lit up her eyes at the memory. “I think that was when I really decided to become a doctor.”

“It’s a wonder you didn’t become a Vet with the amount of animals you took care of back then. Mrs. Barclay’s chickens, old man Paley’s dog.”

“People are easier. They can tell you where it hurts.

“Truth.” He took another bite of pizza, his gaze staying on her. “So. What did Doctor Hamilton want that you didn’t?”

When she nailed him with a look so filled with hurt and yet so swimming in anger, he knew it was something big.

“Other women.”

His hand stopped its assent to his mouth, the point of the pizza wedge dipping down toward the plate. “He cheated on you?”

“Several times. It was his favorite hobby. Most doctors play golf on their days off. Leland played the role of happy bachelor. When I found out and confronted him he told me I didn’t need to worry about any of the women. They meant nothing. It was just sex. His libido was strong and he needed…more, than I could give him. He came home to me every night and I had his name, he said. That proved he loved me and me alone. Seems we differed on the definition of the word. Another thing about us I didn’t learn until several years after we married.”

“What a dick.”

Details about the story will be available soon.. But it’s got a Holiday 2020 release, so…

Until next time, peeps ~ Peg
