A matter of #POV…

The other day on my Facebook page I posted this:

“Hey kids. I just read a rather scathing article about how “Sub-par” writing in the first POV is. Since many – but not all – of my books are written in First person, I was wondering if you could help me out here: Are you automatically turned off to reading anything in the first POV, or do you give the author a chance and see if the book is a worthwhile read?
I have to admit, most of my books written in fist POV are the ones I’ve had the best sales with. But…. Thanks for any feedback. “

Peeps, that simple question garnered me more traffic on those pages than I’ve seen in eons!!

The general consensus was that most people don’t care if a book is written in first or third person as long as: the story is good, the voice is engaging, and the characters are worth reading about.

Since more than half of the books I’ve written are in first person ( the other half in third) I was so thrilled to hear this.

I, too, don’t care if a book is in first or third as long as the story and characters sweep me away. I have so many  writers that I love to read and each of them write in different voices and points of view.

There were some comments of people who don’t like first person for various reasons, and that’s fine with me. I say, the more writers we have offering good stories and their unique telling of those stories in the form of viewpoint, the better!

I’m really loving this year’s themes and topics from L&SR! Today’s is: CHARACTERS WHO REMIND ME OF MYSELF AND WHY.

This could be a really looooooooong blog post, but I’m gonna narrow it down to 2!

The first DR. CHARLOTTE MIRA from the IN DEATH books by JD Robb. Mira is a touchstone in Eve’s life. In the early books she shows her compassion and caring for Eve from a professional standpoint, as she tries to get the (then) detective to see herself as worthy of love and respect, and as more than just her job. Eve’s tragic past has been pushed deep down in her memory banks and as Mira works with Eve, she comes to remember killing her father and the horrible events that lead to it. Throughout the now 50 books and still growing series, Charlotte has come to love Eve like a daughter and has shown Eve a mother’s love that she never had. Mira is smart, soso smart, caring, compassionate and well respected not only by the police department, but by her peers. Since my background is in psychology, I love reading Mira’s profiles on the criminals and murderer’s Eve asks for, plus her husband, the yummy Dennis Mira, is just so wonderful I would love to call him my own! If they ever make an In Death movie, I am going to petition HARD to be cast as Mira…hey, we can all dream, right? Heehee

The second character who reminds me a lot of me is one I wrote: GEMMA LAINE from the WILL COOK FOR LOVE SERIES/ A SHOT AT LOVE. Gemma is such a dichotomy – much like me. She is  a successful photographer; she can shoot any gun you give her, and she has two black belts in different styles of karate. She is intensely loyal to her family, yet due to a sexual assault when she was a shy, introverted teenager, she is leery of ever letting a man get under her skin. She keeps people at at distance – except for her family – and uses her snarky, sassy personality to keep people at a distance. She never shows what she is truly feeling and goes after what she wants without regrets. Gemma is my doppelganger in so many ways. I also shoot, have studied 2 styles of karate, and use humor and snarkiness to keep people at a distance. While I may not have been sexually abused at a teen, I was emotionally and physically abandoned by my father, so I know the pain of feeling like you are not worthy or not enough for someone to love.

Today’s topic prompt is: My favorite memory and why.

Easy Peasy. My favorite memory is tied to a Christmas gift 40 years in the making.

I don’t get a lot of gifts. I didn’t as a child and I haven’t as an adult. I tell you that so you’ll know how precious the gift I’m going to tell you about really is to me.

Obviously, I’m a girl. Duh. I was a child in the 1960’s a time when stereotypical gender roles were still very much in place. Boys got baseball cards, BBguns, and sports equipment for Christmas and birthday gifts. Girls got Barbies, Easy Bake Ovens, and board games like Mystery Date.

I hated all those girly-girly toys. Still do, to be truthful. Even back then I knew they were designed to keep girls in their places, hoping and dreaming of the perfect boy/man to come along and take care of us for eternity.

Gag me now. I so did not buy into that dream. But that’s a blog for another day. Today’s is about my favorite memory.

When I was eight I asked Santa ( that’s right. I still believed in Santa at 8. Still do, in fact.) for a toy I’d seen advertised on Saturday mornings during the cartoon hours. It was aimed at the boy buying market but I didn’t care. I asked Santa that year for Rock’em Sock’em robots!

Lordy, I wanted that toy!!! I said a prayer every night that Santa would leave it for me. I was extra good around the house, doing my chores and even doing things I wasn’t asked to do just to score some brownie points with Old St. Nick.

Christmas morning came and….no robots. I think I opened a new outfit or two for the Barbie doll he’d brought me the year before – the one I NEVER played with, and some Barbie coloring books.

Devastated is too tame for how I felt. My mother asked me why I was so pissed ( and yes, she did say it like that to an 8 year old. Is it any wonder I am the way I am today?) I told her I’d asked Santa for Rock’em Sock’em Robots and couldn’t understand why I didn’t get it. I’d been good, did well in school, went to church. Did everything I was told and supposed to do.

Her explanation was very telling. She shrugged, took a puff of her cigarette and said, “‘Cause you’re a girl, not a boy. Santa doesn’t give boy toys to girls or girl toys to boys. That’s not right.”

See? Telling.

Now, you’re probably wondering why I told you that story. Stick with me and you’ll understand why.

Flash forward 48 years. I’m sitting at dinner with my entire in-law family a few days before Christmas and we go around the table telling stories about Christmas’s of the past. My father-in-law asks me what the best gift I ever got was. I told him, instead, about the Rock’em Sock’em Robots debacle and how much I’d really wanted that toy and how upset I’d been when I didn’t get it. On to the next person for another story.

Christmas morning comes and we are spending it with my in-laws. I wake up and we all start to unwrap gifts. My husband hands me a huge box wrapped with a big red bow and a tag that said, “to Peg, from Santa”. Since I hadn’t asked for anything that year, I was in a quandary about what it could be. When I opened it I started bawling my eyes out. Yup – you guessed it. He’d given me the toy I’d always wanted. Apparently, after hearing the story I’d told a few nights before, he’d sent my brother-in-law to Toys R Us with instructions to get it for me.

Is it any wonder I love this man and have for over 30+ years?

On Book reviews – good ones, bad ones, and ones that make you go “WHAT??!”

I’m not gonna lie….I read my book reviews.

Many authors will tell you they never do because they don’t want to hear anything negative about the book, or that it makes them uncomfortable, or anxious or ( insert your own descriptor).

Not me.

I read every single, friggin, review I find, especially those from people I don’t know. You kind of expect the people you know to say something nice about your book. But it’s the ones I’ve never met, who don’t know me from Eve, who when they take time to write something about one of my books, I sit up and take notice. I’m not arrogant enough to think my words will inspire, entertain, and bring happiness into every single reader’s lives. It’s my hope, but not my reality, peeps, heehee.

What I always find intriguing though, is when one book has polarizing reviews – both ends of the spectrum from 5 stars to 1.

Let me e’splain….

This was a recent review from a very famous author I know through a publisher connection. We have never met, but I thoroughly enjoy reading her books and she is a one-click author for me. For TODAY, TOMORROW, ALWAYS this is her review, up on Amazon:

Peggy Jaeger has done it once more, proving why I keep returning to her stories again and again. The vivid portrait of small town life, the depth of the characters and the breadth of emotions… I love escaping to the worlds this author creates on the pages.

Ms. Jaeger writes in a first person point of view that drags the reader along on a sometimes chaotic ride with Cathy O’Dowd, a small-town lawyer and the eldest O’Dowd sister in the small town of Heaven, New Hampshire. She took over her father’s practice and responsibilities when her parents retired, one of which was sitting on the board of the local Historical Society. When a well-known author comes to town to research his new book, the pair are thrown together and sparks begin to fly.

Okay, none of that sounds terribly exciting, does it?

Small town lawyer. Author doing research. Historical Society.

It all reeks of dusty pages and yawns hidden behind polite hands. And yet…

This story crackles with emotion and tension, as the main characters are instantly drawn to each other but trying desperately to ignore the electric connection. The stubbornly broken characters kept me glued to my Kindle rooting for them to give into their feelings, to get over their sad pasts and find a happily ever after with each other. The scenes with Cathy’s grandmother, Nanny Fee, add comical humor and lightness to the overall story. Ms. Jaeger does a wonderful job of creating real characters we can relate to and root for, with the strong background themes of family and forgiveness running throughout.

I finished this book in a day, and loved escaping into the world Ms. Jaeger created. The first book in this series, Dearly Beloved introduced the town of Heaven and the sisters… And I know there’s one more O’Dowd sister whose story has yet to be published (I can’t wait!)

Amazing, right? And such an ego stroke I can’t tell you!
Now, here’s the same book and a review from Netgalley from someone I don’t know from Adam:
Maggie – 1 star
I have thoroughly enjoyed what I have read so far in Today, Tomorrow, Always. I love the small town atmosphere, the family surrounding Cathy, and the love and patience she has for her family, her sweet dog and her community. The buildup of Mac’s background and loss of his family add to an intriguing mystery. Why did you throw in a gay marriage? My decision is to not finish this book and not request any more of Peggy Jaegar’s books. I read Christmas and Cannolis last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thus, I requested this book. Please leave LBGTQ topics no matter how small under LBGTQ headings. It may be only a minor one-page item, but I am not interested in finding out. I will not be leaving a review on Twitter or Amazon as I do not believe in writing negative reviews.
The last sentence made me laugh. THAT’S exactly what she’s done, isn’t it??
Like it’s been said many times in the past : You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.
Now, if this reviewer had said the story was boring, or the writing was sophomoric, or even that the characters were unrealistic, I would have taken her words to heart and chalked up the bad review to someone who just didn’t like the book. This is still America, people, and we are allowed to have opinions that differ.
But…. this isn’t really a review of the book, is it?
Think about it.
Reread her words.
This is about 1 scene, 250 words, 1 page of a book that she even claims she was enjoying up until these 250 words came into play. For whatever reason this was a trigger for her and she decided to condemn me for the rest of my book writing life.
This is just one of those aspects of being an author that makes me go… WHAT??!

You all know I love having fellow authors on my blog. It’s truly my pleasure to give them a boost with promo and introduce them to readers who might not know about them. This week’s topic is another goodie and I’m sure it’s gonna be controversial. Not is a bad way – but in a get people talking way.

This week, we’re talking about BOOKS I REREAD OR WANT TO REREAD.

I have several friends who typically say once they read a book, that’s it. Done. Fine. Put it on the shelf and forget about it.

Whenever I tell these friends that I’m rereading a book they look at me with horror  slashed across their faces and the first question out of their mouths is, “You couldn’t find anything new to read??”

Well, yes, I could. And I’ve got my next new book lined up on my Kindle, thank you very much. But I wanted to reread this book.

Curiosity ensues and it never ends well, believe me.

I’ve reread GONE WITH WIND 5 times. The last time I was especially cognizant of how racially horrible the book is since we are living in the time of socially consciousness. While it is a terrible book about hatred and racism, it is at it’s heart a love story between Rhett and Scarlett, unfortunately set in the most heinous time our of American History.

Pride and Prejudice is another book I’ve read at least 10 times and each time I do I fall in love all over again with the English language.

I’ve reread every single IN DEATH novel 5 times, starting a marathon read each time with the first book and moving all the way to whatever book is current. Right now, that’s number 50 – Golden in Death. Reading these books is enjoyable, yes, but it’s also a masterclass in how to write a fictional series, character development, world building, and a marriage/love story between two people who are wrong for each other but are sosososos right! My favorite ( and I’ve read it 10 times) is NEW YORK TO DALLAS ( the only book without the IN DEATH moniker.) And yes, every single time, even though I know it’s coming, I cry my eyes out at the last 5 pages.

February 14th is almost here. Treat yourself to a little love!

When I was a kid the only Valentine’s Day cards I ever received were the ones kids were forced to bring to school and distribute to everyone in the class so no one would be left out.

Pathetic, I know.

When I got older and my school mates weren’t required to pass around cards to everyone in the class…I went home empty handed every Feb. 14th.

Still pathetic, I know!

I’m old now, married for 100+ years (!) and I still don’t get Valentine’s Day cards cuz. hubby believes the day – like so many other “HOLIDAYS” was invented by Hallmark to push cards. He’s probably not wrong, hee hee.

But I don’t care about those cards anymore because I’ve got the one thing Valentine’s day typifies: everlasting love with my soulmate, so I consider that a win!
