A visit with #author Karilyn Bentley, and a little exciting news to share!

When I first started writing I knew I’d meet people/writers on whose shoulders I would stand. Writers who paved the way, took risks, and basically helped me be a better writer in the long run. Today’s guest is one of those people/writers. Wild Rose sistah Karilyn Bentley has visited with me several times before when she’s had one of her newest, fabulous books released. Today’s visit is extra special because she’s got some amazeballs news for us all.

Hi Peggy! Thank you for letting me drop by for a visit!

I’m happy to announce the release of The Shadowheart Curse! This book is special to me for several reasons, the main one being that it will be turned into a movie. You can even live stream the making of the movie! Pretty cool, eh? I was asked to write the book based off an idea the movie director had. He wanted to turn ten books into movies and I was asked to write one of those books. Super exciting! And nerve wracking. I had to write a story with an already decided upon locale, character goals, and basic plotline. The story is set in Italy, a place I’ve never been to, and the whole story takes place at an abandoned mill (totally creepy!). Needless to say, research was needed. Most of my research centered on abandoned mills like the one in the story. It started off as a way to try to see what the inside of an ancient mill looked like (the pictures the director gave me of where the movie will be filmed only showed the outside), but quickly turned into a fascinating side trail. There is a place in Sorrento, Italy called Valley of the Mills where a bunch of mills were abandoned and the land took over. Lights drew her attention to the opposite wing of the mill, where a man stood staring at her window. At her. Breath caught in her lungs as she froze.

But only for a brief moment until she realized it wasn’t a man, at least not a living one. Her breath escaped on a whoosh of relief. Intuition whispered the man was the spirit who’d watched her last night.

The one from her dream.

Shadows clung to his body, ghostly fingers releasing as he stepped into the dim slash of moonlight. Lights flickered from behind him, like the dying gasps of sputtering candles. Dressed in a white shirt with an old-fashioned high collar, sleeves rolled halfway up his forearms, and dark trousers, he reminded her of a working man in a World War I photograph. As if he had removed his coat and tie and rolled up his sleeves to get to work.

Except the men in those photos didn’t sport the wide-eyed, happy look of this man. Ghost. Whatever. Yeah, he wasn’t the only one surprised. She’d sworn never to see a ghost again, yet there stood a ghost, captured by her gaze. The man was hot, in an old-fashioned way. At least he didn’t sport a handle-bar moustache.

He gestured to her, his hand beckoning in a “come here” motion.

She squeezed the bridge of her nose. Was she actually thinking of heading his way? Judging by the way her feet pointed toward the door, she’d already decided. Dammit. She might not want to see a ghost or speak to a spirit, but past experience told her if she ignored them, they ramped up the annoying factor.

How bad could it be to talk to an attractive spirit?

I’ve got a favorite Wild Rose sistah with me today, talking about her newest book release and giving us a little insight into her writing life. Please welcome Paranormal and Urban Fantasy writer  KARILYN BENTLEY.

Karilyn has been my guest before but today I asked her some indepth questions about her writing, her writing process, and her life in general. Stick around, because after the interview, she’s giving us a peek at her newest book release DEVIL FORGET ME and you won’t want to miss it!

Karilyn, the Writer:

  1. What drives you to write?

I like to create stories that make people smile.

  1. What genre(s) of Romance do you write, and why?

I write paranormal and urban fantasy because I love to explore the possibilities of extra-normal abilities. In other words, I’ve watched too many superhero movies and shows.

  1. What genre(s) of Romance do you read, and why?

I read paranormal, urban fantasy, and historical. I read paranormal for the same reason I write it and historical because it transports me to a different time and place.

  1. What’s your writing schedule? Do you write every day?

Right now I write every day in the evenings after I finish the day job.

  1. Give us a glimpse of the surroundings where you write. Separate room? In the kitchen? At the dining room table?

At the moment I’m writing in the kitchen. I have a desk, but it is in my husband’s office in the basement and the view from the kitchen is more inspiring.

  1. Are you the kind of writer who needs total quiet to compose, or are you able to filter out the typical sounds of the day and use your tunnel-vision?

I prefer quiet but can write with noise or the TV as long as I’m not in front of it.

  1. Do you listen to music while you write, and if so, what kind? If not, why not?

If I do listen, it has to be instrumental because I’ll start singing to the songs and that interrupts my writing flow.

 

  1. How did you come up with the plotline/idea for your current WIP?

I knew the theme was greed but one of my writing friends helped me with the plot.

Which comes first for you – character or plot? And why?

Usually the plot and then I “what if” the characters to go with the plot. The process is very interwoven together for me.

What 3 words describe you, the writer?

Slow and steady, a little funny, snarky (Peggy here: Lovelovelove those three descriptions!!!)

Karilyn, the Gal:

  • Tell us one unusual thing about yourself – not related to writing! I taught a puppy training class for a couple of months when I was in grad school.
  • Who was your first love and what age were you? My first love was a little boy who was my friend. I was three. Mom set up a playdate and I hid under the couch because I was embarrassed he would learn I liked him. Silly, eh? My first real love was my husband.
  • If you could relive one day, which one would it be? Think GROUNDHOG DAY, the movie for this one – you’ll have to live it over and over and…. I have no idea! Maybe a vacation day?
  • Do you like a guy in boxers, briefs, or commando? Briefs
  • If you had to give up one necessary-can’t-live-without-it beauty item, what would it be? Eyeliner
  • What three words describe you, the person? Funny, loyal and loving
  • If you could sing a song with Jimmy Fallon, what would it be? I can’t sing so I have no idea!
  • If you could hang out with any literary character from any book penned at any time line, who would it by, why, and what would you do together? Albus Dumbledore from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling. Why? The man has unexplored depths. I’d love to just talk with him, maybe take a stroll across the ground of Hogwarts. I’m assuming he’d talk with a Muggle.

I love the Actor’s Studio show on Bravo, so this is my version of it:

Favorite sound: Birds chirping

Least favorite sound: cars backfiring

Best song every written: Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey and Hotel California by The Eagles (yes, I know, that’s two, not one)

Worst song ever written: No idea

Favorite actor and actress: Harrison Ford and Sophie Turner

Who would you want to be for 1 day and why? (It can be anyone living or dead): The Queen of England. I’d like to see how the rich and famous really live.

What turns you on? Kindness and people who really listen to you

What turns you off? Rudeness and an inability to listen to other people’s ideas

Give me the worst 5 words ever heard on a first date ( here’s mine: “Is that your real hair?”): I can’t remember so I guess nothing said was that bad!

What’s your version of a perfect day? Sleeping in then drinking coffee on the deck while reading a book

DEVIL FORGET ME

What appears to be a simple crime, unmasks a chilling deception…

Gin Crawford, the world’s newest demon huntress, kills two minions who are breaking into a financial adviser’s office. But what she thinks of as another night in the life of a demon huntress leads to a cover-up of epic proportions. A demon haunts her employer, the Agency, and only she can stop it.

Aidan Smythe, her guardian mage and lover, along with her brother T, and the healer Eloise, join her search in discovering the demon’s identity. A search thwarted by a powerful spell.

Breaking the spell requires her to join forces with Zagan, the demon of deceit, the demon who marked her as his. But working together comes with a price. One Gin is not sure she can pay.

EXCERPT:

She chuckles as I sip my beer. “Not nothing. I am trying to discover the identity of the demon at theAgency.” She frowns. “It’s not going well. I know I know who the demon is, but every time I think of its identity”—her hands move in a poof motion—“it

vanishes.”

“Yeah, I have the same problem.”

A memory pops into my mind. Two memories, actually. The first was of last night’s fight with Rahab. How the demon said he only had one demon left to kill in order to rule Hell. Mammon, the demon of greed. The second memory was from last week when Smythe and I went to the Agency. We ran into Chuck Tweedy, the Big Boss of the Agency, and my justitia couldn’t stop chanting “greedy.” I assumed the bracelet got its

words mixed up, exchanging Tweedy for greedy. But what if there was a connection?

A dull pain hammers my head. I rub my brow. What was I thinking? We were talking about the Agency demon. Who could it be?

“You do have the same problem.” Eloise touches my leg, and the headache disappears. “That’s what happened to me.”

“How did you know?” Eloise was blind, although I swear at times she sees fine. “I could feel your pain.” Her brow furrows. “Like a spell had been thrown at you that caused the headache. I wonder if the same thing happens when I get a headache from thinking on the demon’s identity.”

“Wait. You mean whenever I think about who the demon is, my thoughts trigger a spell? What does the spell do?”

Hi Peggy! Thank you for letting me blog with you today! I’m happy to announce the Audible version of Demon Lore, the first book in my Demon Huntress series. The narrator is Joan Dukore and she does a great job bringing my characters to life.

In case you were wondering, it took a while to bring the book to life. It felt like forever (says the impatient author) to get a narrator, but I’m glad for the wait because I love the audio version. It’s so much fun to hear your book read by a narrator.

Here’s a little bit about Demon Lore:

Gin Crawford has enough problems dealing with her empath abilities. Finding out she’s the world’s newest demon-slayer is the last thing she needs. Unfortunately, when she slips on a mysterious bracelet she is given no other choice. On the plus side, her new gig comes with Tall, Dark and Handsome, a mage who may or may not have her best interests at heart. Thrust into a power-play between good and evil, Gin must choose a side before she becomes the next victim in the ongoing battle.

And an excerpt:

The evil man-thing stands on my porch, his lips turning in a menacing smile of death. I don’t need to touch him to know he wants me dead. Muscles freeze, trapping my breath in my lungs. Like a rabbit in view of a wolf, I’m immobilized, waiting for death’s blow. Time slows, his gaze locks on mine, trapping me in place.

Move, move, move! My mind screams as the man’s fingers twitch.

But the spike of adrenaline explodes into my limbs too late to stop the backhand blow slamming across my jaw.

I superman it halfway across the living room. Land on the hardwood floor in a thud of pain-ridden limbs. My jaw morphs into a screaming ball of nerves. My head no sooner hits the floor than I hear the bracelet scream, a high-pitched wail quivering through my skin like vibrations from a tuning fork. The bracelet tightens around my wrist, cutting off the circulation, and then it loosens with a pop at the same time I hear the door click closed.

Ohgodohgodohgod, I’m going to die. I don’t want to die. No, no, no, no, no. Pain and terror hold me crumpled on the floor as my mind crawls backward in time.

But I’m no longer a child, fearful of fists and words, cowering on the ground.

I’m a fighter.

My head spins, but I refuse to lie on the floor waiting to be killed, so I attempt to stand. Evil Guy laughs as I ass-plant it. Laughs as a moan escapes my lips. He takes a step toward me, right arm drawn back for a hit. His fist hurls toward my face, but I manage to block it with my left arm. My right arm, the one with the bracelet, shoves forward, slamming into his chest.

His black eyes widen, mouth open in surprise, his hands fluttering to his chest before dropping. I stare at my hand, stare hard, for I’m as surprised as Evil Guy. The bracelet had become a sword, a long, thin spike of metal extending from the silver links, straight into Evil Guy’s heart.

A sword?

Definitely a sword. The flat of the blade rests against the back of my hand, cool metal heating from the warmth of my skin. Small silver links circle around my palm, lending stability to the two-foot long sword.

I’m not sure which scares me more, Evil Guy paying me a visit or the fact the bracelet performed a morphing trick.

A great book at a great price! Author Karilyn Bentley and Demon Lore

Today, one of my prolific Wild Rose Press sistahs, Karilyn Bentley is visiting. She’s got a little present for you: a book sale!! Join me in welcoming Karilyn….

Thank you for letting me blog with you today Peggy! I’m excited to announce that the first book in my urban fantasy series, Demon Lore, is on sale for 99cents until Thursday the 26th. The series features Gin Crawford, an ER nurse who is also an empath, and her journey as she becomes the world’s newest demon huntress. Needless to say, she’s not too excited about her new job.

In case you are wondering how I came up with the idea for this series, it took a roundabout route. I had this idea of a boy who was clutching a bracelet while hiding under a bed from a serial killer. But I couldn’t figure out the rest of the story. At the same time that idea was haunting me, I was also playing around with this funny scene with a nurse in an ER. I decided to stick the two ideas together and voila, the Demon Huntress series was born. While the scene with the boy hiding under the bed is still in the book, the funny scene (which was the original opening scene of Demon Lore) was cut. I’m now writing the fifth, and last, book in the series. The fourth book should be out early next year.

An interview with #author Karilyn Bentley

 

Today I get to introduce you to another of my wonderful, talented, and prolific Wild Rose Press sistahs, Karilyn Bentley. Karilyn writes in a genre I am ashamed to say I don’t know much about: Urban Fantasy. But I’m going to rectify that today because the little snippet of her current work she’s talking about today sounds amazeballs! Come and meet Karilyn….

Karilyn,The Writer Questions

  1. What drives you to write? The stories and characters in my head keep talking to me and I have to put them on paper or go nuts!
  2. What genre(s) of Romance do you write, and why? Currently, I write urban fantasy. I started off writing paranormal and fantasy romance, but something about the urban fantasy genre drew me in. I love to write in first person with a snarky female heroine.
  1. What genre(s) of Romance do you read, and why? Historical, paranormal, mystery, and urban fantasy are my favorites. I like to be taken to a different place when I read, and of course, I need the HEA.
  1. What’s your writing schedule? Do you write every day? I try to write every day but oftentimes am not successful. I work mornings at the day job, so I try to write either in the afternoons or the evenings.
  1. Give us a glimpse of the surroundings where you write. Separate room? In the kitchen? At the dining room table? We moved last year and prior to that, I had my own office. When we moved, my desk went into the room where my hubby works from home, but instead of using that desk, I now write at the kitchen table. The view is prettier. And I don’t have to listen to hubby’s conference calls. J
  1. Are you the kind of writer who needs total quiet to compose, or are you able to filter out the typical sounds of the day and use your tunnelvision? I need almost total quiet. I can’t even put on headphones or listen to music. Spoken words distract me when I try to write. (Peggy here: me, too!!! I should live in a sound booth that keeps all noise out!)
  1. Do you listen to music while you write, and if so, what kind? If not, why not? Nope, no music. Too distracting!
  1. How did you come up with the plotline/idea for your current WIP? It’s part of my urban fantasy series so I am trying to wrap up plot threads. J But, the original idea for the series was a cross between an old TV show and a nurse who has problems. I wanted it to be a little funny, a lot snarky, and have a bit of a mystery.
  1. Which comes first for you – character or plot? And why? Usually plot, but for this series, the main character came to me first. I wanted to tell Gin’s story. But now that I have her character in my head, it’s the plot that comes for the other books in the series.

What 3 words describe you, the writer?

Slow. As in, I’m one of the slowest writers ever!

Pantser hybrid. As in, I have to know where the story ends but nothing else.

      • I was in love with a little friend from the time I was 3 until I was 12. Yeah, crazy. As far as men goes, I’d have to say it was my hubby. J
    • If you could relive one day, which one would it be? Think GROUNDHOG DAY, the movie for this one – you’ll have to live it over and over and….
      • Oh wow. I have no idea. But that’s a great question! There are a lot of things I’d like to do again (as in places to travel to) but I’m not sure about one day.
    • Do you like a guy in boxers, briefs, or commando?

    • If you had to give up one necessary-can’t-live-without-it beauty item, what would it be?
      • Lipstick
    • What three words describe you, the person?
      • Funny, a good friend, likes to listen (Okay, so that’s more than three. I’ve never been good at math. Ha!)
    • If you could sing a song with Jimmy Fallon, what would it be?
      • I can’t sing!!
    • If you could hang out with any literary character from any book penned at any time line, who would it be, why, and what would you do together? Claire and Jamie from Outlander. They always seem to be having an adventure, so I’d go along with them.

  • Favorite actor and actress – I love Harrison Ford and Robert Redford. Not sure about the actress, I like several of them.

    • I can’t believe someone asked you that on your first date! Here’s mine: “Let’s go to Hooters. They have good wings.” (they do have good wings, but let’s face it, that’s not why the guy wanted to go)
  • What’s your version of a perfect day?
    • Sleeping in late, drinking several cups of coffee while sitting on my deck and reading a book.

I might be a fancy-assed demon huntress, but I destroy minions, not human killers. Lucky for me, I can tell which type of kill this scene belongs to with little effort.

      Closing my eyes, I start to take a deep calming breath, think better of it, and focus on activating my minion sensors. Tapping into the power of the entity lying along my nerves, I open my eyes to a tactical grid display of reds and oranges, a clear indication of a minion’s presence at the scene.

      Looks like I’ll get my wish to annihilate the bastard who killed this poor woman.
