Black Friday, shopper anxiety, and a #99cent sale…

And so, on this day after America gave thanks for her many blessings, the commercialization of the holiday season – better known as BLACK FRIDAY – begins.

I will tell you this honestly: I have NEVER gone shopping on Black Friday. I’m not one for crowds. They make me nervous. Covid didn’t help my anxiety, either, but bolstered and increased it a million-fold.

Cyber shopping was truly invented for people like me – the ones who must and need to shop, but hate going out in public to do so. Long lines. Whining kids. Grumpy shoppers. People who don’t cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze right in your face.

Nope. Not my cup of tea at all.

Which is why I love to shop internet/store deals on this day.

If you’re like me and hate to leave home on this busy, ridiculously busy day, I’ve got a deal for you and the book lovers on your holiday gift list – a #99cent sale on FIXING CHRISTMAS my latest Dickens Holiday Romance. Today it is available for a limited time at #99cents everywhere digital books are sold – Amazon, Nook, Applebooks, even Kobo.

Here’s the universal link. Just click and choose your purchase venue: FIXING CHRISTMAS

If you like a small town, later in life, and holiday romcoms – or the romance reader on your gift list does – this is the book for you! And at less than a dollar? Well, that’s even better.

Whether you’re embracing the hordes in the stores, or sitting on your couch finger shopping, I hope you find all the deals and gifts you want this holiday season.

And I really hope one of them includes my book! Shameless plug, I know, but this is me, after all!

Happy Shopping, peeps ~ Peg

#TuesdayTeaser and Ice Cream!

From VANILLA WITH A TWIST one of the One Scoop or Two novellas from The Wild Rose Press

“I can’t pay you in cash,” she said, oblivious to the effect she’d had on him, “but at least let me treat you to anything on the menu. There’s never a wrong time to have ice cream.”

He chuckled.

“How about a free cone every day you’re in town? I’m assuming you’re on vacation?”

His head bobbed once in answer.

“It’s the least I can do for your help, Mr…”

“Deacon. Deacon Withers.” Ingrained manners forced his hand out.

She gazed down at it for a beat, and he wondered at her reluctance. When she finally took his hand, she said, “Tandy Blakemore. Vanilla with a Twist is my shop, and you just helped me fix an ongoing problem and prevent a dispensing disaster. This machine is the only one that does flavor twists.”

“I’m glad I could help. And while a free cone sounds nice—” He cleared his throat, surprising himself with his next words. “—how about you have dinner with me instead?”

Wariness flew back into her eyes. As intriguing as her open smile had been, this hesitant reaction was even more so.

“I’m sorry. I can’t. The store is open until ten. Tourist season, you know?”

“You have to eat sometime.”

She shook her head again. “True, but…sorry. Now, about your ice cream? What flavor did you order?”

He hadn’t met many people who could so summarily dismiss him and still smile while doing so.

“Fudge ripple with chocolate jimmies.” The woman who’d originally waited on him had one all ready to go and handed it to Tandy.

“For services rendered,” Tandy said as she gave it to him. “And with my sincere thanks.”

Enjoy an ice cream on this hot day. Remember, like Tandy says: “There’s never a wrong time for ice cream.”

Until next time, peeps ~ Peg

Goodreads reading challenge…score!

Well, this year is the first time I actually finished ahead of my goal before December 31! The funny thing is, I have read so many more than 103 books so far this year. The ones that made it to this list were mostly Netgalley and author review request books that I was required to write a review for and document that I’d read the book. But I have read a bunch of new authors in book/print formthis year that I never added to my Goodreads stats. Why you ask? Laziness is the main reason, hee hee.

Do you ever record the number of books you read in a year? A month? Even a week? I bet if you did you’d be surprised at the number you actually finish. I know I was. The first year I took the challenge I read 150 books. Year 2, the same. Last year I put 150 down as my goal and actually managed to finish with 168 in the queue. This year I made my goal a little less because I remembered what a struggle it was last year to finish at the number I did. I’m happy, too, that I lowered it because this year I read only books I wanted to read and not those I was suggested or asked to read.

SO, how many books a year do you manage? Any? Less than 50? More than 100? The number of books pledged on this years Goodreads challenge is: 261,287,175.  That’s over two hundred million books!!!! The average number pledged is 63. MY little writing heart hopes some of those pledges include my own books!.

Heehee

I saw this horrible graphic a few years ago on FB that gave me pause ( Okay, I get it was on Fb and MOST stuff there should give you pause and make you think twice about believing it!)

I started digging because I didn’t feel this could be true. And you know what? It isn’t. Not even close.

This article  debunks the entire premise that people don’t read after they graduate high school. In fact, the article states:

Recent studies have actually shown that readership is up in the United States, with young people reading more than older  people. A 2014 study by the Pew Research Center found that “millennials are quite similar to their elders when it comes to the amount of book reading they do, but young adults are more likely to have read a book in the past 12 months.”

Now, that’s more like it!

The advent of ereaders, like Kindle and Nook, have made it so much easier for people to take what they are reading anywhere with them. It’s a whole lot easier to cart around a tome like Lord of the Rings on a kindle than it is to lug the print book to and fro. Reading on the subway while on the way to work, or the bus, or even on a plane during vacations and long flights is easier. In fact, every time I fly I see more and more passengers reading books on their phones, devices and even computers.

Can I just tell you how much I simply adore that!

I’m trying to decide how many books to set next year for my goal. 150 was tough. 100 not so much. Should I average it out and say 125? I’ve still got a few weeks to decide.

I seriously think you should consider doing a reading challenge. It’s fun, competitive without being hard ( hey, you’re reading!! Not climbing a mountain in the rain barefoot and naked!) and reading is such a great way to keep your mind and soul refreshed and young.

Keep reading, peeps.

Until next time ~ Peg

What makes a #book #bingeworthy ?

This month on N.N. Light’s Book Heaven, it’s a celebration of Bingeworthy Books

I’m lucky enough to have my current Limitless Release DIRTY DAMSELS as one of those books being celebrated as bingeworthy – an honor, believe me!!!

I’m thrilled to have any book of mine thought of as one that has to be finished in one sitting! I have several favorite authors, who, when they release a new book, I devour immediately, unable to put it down until I know how everything resolves. And even though I read mainly romance, with the ending a guarantee of an HEA, an ending I KNOW is coming, I still can’t wait to finish the book.

SO, this got to me to thinking ( you knew that was coming, didn’t you? Hee hee): what, exactly, must a book have in it to make it a bingeworthy read for me?

  1. A heroine that I can get behind who’s independent, strong willed, compassionate, snarky – if she can be – and willing to stand up to people and situations because she believes in drawing a line in the sand when things are wrong. She will never be weak willed, nasty or mean, and she will always, always, fight for the underdog. She doesn’t go along with the crowd like a lemming, but forges her own path. And despite any troubles or conflicts that come her way, she always believes in herself and her capabilities. Oh, and I don’t care if she’s a size zero or a triple XL. All of Nora Roberts/JD Robb’s heroines are examples of women like this for me.
  2. A hero who doesn’t have to be conventionally tall, dark and handsome, but can have a face he fits into. He must be smart, he must be inherently kind  ( even when he’s being an absolute prick), love the heroine as if his life depended on it, be honest and truthful ( even when he needs to lie for plot reasons, hee hee) it doesn’t hurt if he’s witty or snarky and his ability to remain calm in chaotic situations is a must.It also doesn’t hurt if he’s seen the bad parts of life and survived some trauma, either. Sandra Brown and Lisa Kleypas‘ heros are examples of men like this.
  3. A plot that is believable and not contrived. Sarah Morgan and Tami Hoag are experts at this.
  4. Dialogue that flies off the page and makes me feel as if I’m listening to two people actually talking to one another. It takes a special kind of writer who can do this, seamlessly, and make you flip those pages one right after the other, anticipating what these two are going to say to one another and how they are going to say it. Jill Shalvis and Lauren Layne have this gift. In spades.
  5. Secondary characters I could see as my friends if they were to walk off the page. Again, nobody does this better than Nora in her JD Robb persona ( In my humble opinion.) The characters of Peabody, McNab, Summerset, Mavis, et al are all people I could see myself meeting for drinks and going to book club with!
  6. A setting I’d love to visit or live in. The way Janet Evanovich writes her scenes of New Jersey in the Stephanie Plum books is perfect for an example.

Each of the writers I mentioned above is a binge read author for me. The moment they release new books I stop whatever it is I am doing, whether it’s cleaning the house or writing my own books, and readreadread until I am done.

My greatest, secret wish is that I am a bingeworthy author for a reader!!

A .99cent book sale from #DonnaSimonetta

My beautiful writing friend and Wild Rose Press sistah, Donna Simonetta, is having a book sale and I’m so happy to recommend this wonderful book to you all! The ebook will be available for just $.99 cents from January 25 until Feb. 8, so get your copy today!

And just to whet your book reading appetite, here’s a little sumthin’ sumthin’ from the story…..

Two years after her husband’s death, Kelly believes her romantic life is done. Until she reconnects with her girlhood crush on social media, and as fate would have it, he lives across the street.

James is over the whole true-love thing. His grasping ex-wife tore that belief out of him, when she left him for a rich, old man. Then he finds out his first love moved to San Diego too, and their attraction burns as hot as ever.

What they don’t know is that Fate didn’t bring them together – the Guardian Angel Corps did, led by two unlikely Cupids – Kelly’s late husband and Zane, a rough and tumble, 19thcentury cowboy. When a Fallen Angel decides to tear Kelly and James apart, cherubs and harps aren’t going to cut it, and Zane’s unique skills might be just what they need to get a second chance at their first love.

Excerpt:

She flashed a bright smile at her old friend,  “I sent a friend request to Susie Davidson, and I want to see if she’s responded.”

“Susie Davidson,” Grace’s voice dripped with disdain, “we didn’t badger you into doing this so you could reconnect withSusie Davidson.”

“Hey, what’ve you got against old Susie? She was an integral part of our nerd squad in high school,” David said. “Right, Kel?”

When she didn’t reply, he glanced over at his old friend to see her frozen at her computer, all the color drained from her face. “Kel, what’s wrong?”

“I didn’t hear from Susie, but I didget a message from James Flynn,” she whispered.

David jumped to his feet and peeked over her shoulder at the computer screen. “Yummy James Flynn from Rye?”

Grace snickered, “Sounds like a sandwich. I’ll have a Yummy James Flynn on rye. Hold the mayo.”

Kelly and David swung their heads in unison to stare at her.

“What? It’s not my fault you two come from a town named after a bread.”

David shook his head mournfully and intoned, “Californians.”

“Native, baby.”  The blonde woman grinned playfully, “And don’t you New England Yankees forget it.”

“What does he say, Kel?” David asked with interest.

Kelly gulped, “He wanted to get in touch and maybe meet for a drink.”  She twisted her head to look up at David, her eyes huge on her pale face, “He lives here, David. In San Diego.”

A great #Booksale from one of my Favorite #Authors

Wild Rose Press sistah and fab author Donna Simonetta, is having a book sale. From now until June 8, A SWEETER SPOT will be on sale at the following Venues. If you’re looking for a great read to start your summer, this is a book for you!

Blurb:

Magda knows a 28-year-old shouldn’t run away from home, but Rivers Bend is the ideal escape. Helping out her best friend will get her away from her uber-wealthy, controlling grandmother and duplicitous ex. She doesn’t expect the quirky little town to feel so much like home. Add in hotter-than-the-sun Jeff and his daughter, and leaving seems as unthinkable as it is inevitable.

Raising Sam alone, Jeff knew he wanted her to grow up in his supportive hometown. The arrival of a feisty new tenant sends Jeff’s world spinning. Magda fills a void in his life that he’d like to make permanent.

Will love triumph over the most powerful woman in the country, and can they figure out how to make this happy-for-now in Rivers Bend into their happy-ever-after?

Excerpt:

“Being cheated on is no fun. It happened to me once. Up here,” he tapped his forehead. “You know it’s not your fault. But here,” he tapped his chest over his heart. “You feel like it has to be your fault – like you could’ve done something to prevent it. But you couldn’t have. It’s all on him, Maggie. Not you.”

She picked a dandelion, whose flower had turned into a puffball, and blew on it, scattering the fluff to the wind. “Maybe. Maybe not. But thanks for the support.”

She pushed to her feet and took a couple of steps toward the river. Jeff rose and followed.

How could he be so angry at a man he didn’t even know? How could this Pierce jerk have slept around on a woman like Maggie? And the prick had even made her doubt herself in the process. It was written all over her anguished face.

He stood behind her and gently kneaded her shoulders. He turned her to face him and cupped her face in his big hands.

“This Pierce guy is the biggest fool on earth to go to someone else when he had you at home, Maggie.”

She blinked away tears, and he felt his heart constrict. Before he could think it through and decide it was a really bad idea, Jeff dipped his head and captured Magda’s lips in a gentle kiss.
