The End…for now

The logo/motto for the 2018 RWA conference was RETHINK REVITALIZE RENEW. I think I did all 3.

It’s been a week since I’ve been home and I’ve been super busy trying to finish edits on an upcoming title, due today. Yesterday I completed them and sent them on their way, so now I can start to listen to the RWA flash drive of the classes and workshops I missed, plus put into effect some of the marketing strategies I learned.

Here are a few random pictures I still haven’t posted from the event. Next year, NYC. Can’t wait…truly!

When I had to choose which shoes to wear to which event:

When the menu had yet another thing I was allergic to: (PS I  never ate the food at any of the  luncheons or dinners because I was allergic to almost everything they served!

My favorite event: The ProLiteracy book Singing!

Next year I’m going to be more diligent in how I take pictures. This year I didn’t take enough!

Set for life….

This is a topic/prompt I’ve thought about a lot in recent years: What would I do if I won the lottery?

You would think the ideas would be endless. They might…for some. But not me.

If I suddenly came into great wealth there are really just a few things I’d do with the money.

  1. Make my husband retire. And I mean MAKE!!! He’d have no choice at all in the matter.
  2. Pay off all the mortgages/school loans/ debts of my parents and in laws.
  3. Start a foundation dedicated to PAYING IT FORWARD. I’ve had so many blessings in my life ( even if I don’t win the lottery) that I feel I need to help others as I’ve been helped, with the stipulation they pay the good fortune forward.

That’s really all I can think of for now. I wouldn’t suddenly leave on a world tour; I wouldn’t go buy-crazy and get boats, houses in every state, flashy jewelry.

I have simple tastes and not much actual NEED.

Don’t hate me….heehee.

Let’s see what some of the other authors in this blog challenge would do with a sudden influx of ridiculous cash. MFRWauthorblogchallenge

The Doors of #RWA2018

Many years ago when I visited my daughter in Ireland where she was studying, I came upon a poster in a local shop called the Doors of Dublin.

This is my version of that famous poster featuring many of the decorated elevator doors at the Sheraton Downtown hotel where RWA 2018 was held. RWA has been shrink-wrapping the elevator doors in hotels for years and it’s a fabulous marketing tool for the authors who are lucky enough to be able to afford it. I’m not at that tier yet but….someday.

Obviously, I couldn’t put every elevator door poster in this blog, but believe me when I tell you – there were a lot of them and every one was sosososo cool!

I have photos from past years of these elevators, too, so I think that I’ll put together a poster like the Doors of Dublin and see if I become famous like the photographer who put that collection together did!

Just think’ aloud, peeps.

A long flight home…..

I wanted to write this blog before I finish up with all the RWA stuff I have planned to tell you all this week.

Yesterday I flew home from Denver. Due to severe storms in the Colorado area and on the eastern seaboard ( where I was heading) my flight was delayed for 2 hours, 90 minutes of it spent on the tarmac just waiting in line to lift off.

Not fun. Not even a little bit.

There were two shining lights during this waiting time, though, that made this trip home  one of my favorite ones to date of all the places I’ve traveled.

First, some backstory. My husband loves to fly on Southwest ( me, not so much) so he booked my trip through that carrier to Denver. I always sit in exactly the same seat on Southwest if I can. Last row, right before the lavatories, close to the stew crew and the kitchen. Why, you ask? Well, I’ll tell you. My legs cramp when I sit down for too long and in this seat I can stretch them out fully without worrying I’m going to trip someone coming down the aisle. I can stand whenever I want ( that is if the seatbelt sign isn’t illuminated) and stretch, plus I tend to drink a lot more water on flights to stay hydrated. And when you drink more, you…..you can finish this sentence!

So, I sat in the same seat as always when I boarded. About ten minutes later the plane was almost full when two lovely women around a similar age to me came down the aisle and asked if they could sit in my row. Of course they could! And did.

Well, when you put two or more women of a similar age together, conversation will ensue, and ensue it did. While we waited FOREVER on the tarmac all three of us got to talking. They asked what I’d been doing in Denver – working or vaca, and I told them both and then explained why I was there and what I do for a living. To say they were excited would be an understatement!
By telling them I was a writer and of romantic fiction, it opened a flood gate of more questions about writing, publishing, how  I get my ideas, did I always want to write — and on and on.

It was wonderful!!! Truly wonderful!! For a few hours I actually felt like a famous author instead of the relative unknown that I am. I was so enamored with these two lovely women I gave them each a signed copy of COOKING WITH KANDY that I just happened to have in my carryon. I was never a Boy Scout but that thing about always being prepared is smart! I also gave them some swag and my business card with all my author info on it.

Now, when I was reaching up to put my carryon back into the overhead compartment, the second shining light appeared in the guise of another lovely woman who was sitting in the row in front of ours. She excused herself, told me she hadn’t been eavesdropping ( with the loud way I talk it’s  unavoidable for people around me not to!), but she was a Librarian, and could she have my card so she could look up my books?

Well, this is me, peeps, so I did one better – I gave her a copy of my newest release CAN’T STAND THE HEAT, which I also had in my carryon ( see? always  prepared!) as a donation for her library, and I gave her my  business card as well so she could look up my other titles.

Best. Trip. Ever.

I lovelovelove making new friends, and friends who happen to like reading are my absolute favorite people! So, Mary Pat and Honoree – here’s to you!

I told those lovely ladies this, so I’ll tell you, too; you can find me here if you need me:

Winding down….

I have to admit I have been remiss these past few days in posting. So freakin’ much has been happening here in Denver, it’s all I can do just to keep up!

Let’s recap.

Thursday was the Kensington Book Signing.

My table was filled with readers all wanting a copy of my newest Lyrical book CAN’T STAND THE HEAT, plus the handpainted bags I give out as swag. I “sold out” within 15 minutes of the 1 hour aloted signing. But I got to hang out with one of my fav Kensington authors Jenna Jaxon.

Then, the Oscars of the romance reading world, THE RITA AWARDS completed the day with a ceremony filled with heartfelt moments and more than a few heated speeches about the state of the romance book world, and the world in general. The RITAs are a strange mix of glitz, glamour, and casual. Some of the writers wear gowns, sparkly stilettoes, and I spied 2 tiaras. Others wear business clothes – suits or cocktail dresses. Some even wear their comfy jeans and blouses. This diversity in attire -to me- explains the romance writer to the…T ( Heehee). We come from all backgrounds, races, economic statuses, age groups, and styles, yet we all write HEA’s, hunky heroes, and strong women. Love that. Simply, love that.

The workshops have been, for the most part, informative. There was a wide assortment of Indy workshops this year that didn’t pertain to me, since I’m traditionally published. I’ve seen this as a trend in most of the conferences I’ve attended the past few years. More things relating to self publishing than to the more traditional avenue. I don’t know how I feel about that, since I’ll never go Indy ( and you know what they say about never saying never) but I guess it’s a good thing the workshops are offered for all aspects  that comprise the romance publishing realm.

On Friday night I attended the Kensington Books party where the appetizers were the most delicious things I think I’ve ever eaten!! Then off to the Contemporary Romance Writers Awards ceremony, where I was a finalist in  the romantic suspense category for A SHOT AT LOVE.

Stiletto Finalist 2018

I may have mentioned I was a finalist once or twice ( or ten million times!) on the blog. Alas, I didn’t  win, but it was really great to be a finalist in such a prestigious group. The more people who see your name, the more readers you can potentially garner who will like your work. That’s the way I look at it, at least.

So, yesterday, Saturday, was the final day and again – jammpacked!!! I’ll be posting about that later. For now, I need to get to the airport and leave for home, my bed, and my hubby!! Miss them so much!

My favorite Holiday Memory…

I’m at the RWA conference in Denver this week, but I didn’t want to miss a week of this blog challenge since I’ve written a piece every week since we started! Yay, me.

Any hoo…

The topic this week is a my favorite holiday memory, and there really is only one that comes to mind. I wrote about this back in May of this year, so I’m reposting it here now, because it fits with today’s prompt.

My favorite holiday  memory

And since this is a blog hop, make sure you hop on over to the website to see what the other authors participating have to say about this challenge prompt.

#RWA2018, day 1 done…

First day done and gone. What a funfilled day it was, too. Got to reconnect with some old friends and finally met some of my Wild Rose sistahs in person. That was amazeballs.

Yesterday’s first and only workshop for me was a master class in perfecting your writing newsletter. I have to admit, it was waaaaaaay over my head almost from the get-go. That has nothing to do with the presenter and everything to do with my lack of techy skills. The language, the constructs, even the terminology was more than my little brain could take, so I didn’t master the class, I was strictly a lowly apprentice.

Very lowly.

I did get a chance to tour the area a bit, though, before everything started.

Found this appropriate plaque on a wall tucked in an alley. It’s like the Denver Chamber of Commerce set it up just for RWA peeps!

This little guy was tucked into another alley, just hanging out and smiling at the passersby.

Denver-ites sure do love their Tex-Mex cuisine. I took this pic at 8:10 in the morning and the locals were already lined up and buying their flavorful truck food for the day. The name on the truck says “Asada Rico – Mexican Grill.’ Burritos and tacos before 9. Whoa!

Along the 16th Street Mall there’s a center lane that’s filled with these food trucks, artists, even a few pianos placed by the Chamber, where people ( mostly the homeless) gather, sit, and in one very special case I saw, play Chopin brilliantly.

This little stoop was a surprise. I found it as I was walking along and thought it was a private residence with an owner who loved his/her flowers. Here’s the surprise: it’s the MUSEUM of the Wild West!

Kinda cool, eh?

So that concludes my little Denver tour for the day.

Today is a full one. I’ve got tons of classes back to back AND my KENSINGTON BOOK Signing at 3pm, and capped off with the RITA AWARD ceremony tonight. For those of you who follow me, you know one of my dear and talented NHRWA chaptermates, Lisa Olech, is up for an award. All my chapter sistahs who are in attendance are going to be screaming our heads off when she wins. You might even hear us wherever you are.

Just sayin….

Off to the gym. More to come, so stay tuned.

And so the madness begins….

So, it’s officially the beginning of the conference today, but after being here for 2 days already, I’ve done a ton of stuff.

Yesterday’s workshops with R.L. Syme and the amazeballs Damon Suede were the perfect little amuse bouches to get me revved up for the week ahead. But I wasn’t only listening and learning yesterday. I went exploring as well.

Did you now Denver lives…bulls? Or is it Broncos? Whatever…

I found these two beauties on my walk downtown yesterday. I’ve been told there are others scattered all over the city. When I spot new ones, I’ll post pix of them

Yesterday was the first official day to register for the conference. I’m all set….

I lovelovelove this pop-up in the registration area.

Dinner last night was spent with great company: My NHRWA chapter President and 2 other dear writing friends. When in Denver, you must eat in a local steakhouse.

Two of the gals had steaks – one bison, one cow – another had a delicious looking vegetable platter, and I settled for an old standby because, you know…..food allergies and such.

Cocktails were had – not moi, of course – andI  just have to put one of them on display because it was, to my non-alcohol-knowing eyes, so unusual. Tequila with a habanero pepper, a lime, and a sugar rim. Very western.

So, today’s agenda is a light one. A master class on writing Newsletters this afternoon at 2. Then I’m getting to meet with some of my Wild Rose Press sistahs for a littler meet and greet later on this evening. I’m super stoked about that.

More to come from Denver. Keep tuned….

Denver or bust…

SO I made it! YAY!

I didn’t have the best experience on my second flight. On the first I had a flock of Nuns on board with me so those of you who know me KNOW how happy this made me! I felt safe, protected ( hello? Brides of Christs, peeps!) and so calm.

Then the second flight happened.

What is it about some men that feel they have the right to manspread? To invade your personal space without a care? A thought? The guy sitting next to me was about 6 feet 2 and almost as wide. When he shoved himself into the middle seat ( his wife was at the window) I lost more than a third of my personal space because took over 1/3 of my seat. I even put the arm rest down between us but that just made him spread his arm all over it, so I had absolutely no room to put my arm. He was touching me from shoulder to knees for 4 friggin’ hours! I wanted to work on my WIP but when when I opened my laptop I realized I needed my left hand to type and if I wanted to do that, I hit him continually with the movement.

So horrible. You think he would have gotten the message, but who am I kidding? The guy reeked of entitlement and masculine douchery. Is that even a word? Don’t know, don’t care, because it describes him perfectly.

Any hoo.

I’m here now, and ready to party, that rude gentleman relegated to a quick mention in a blog piece. On the agenda today is the Contemporary Romance Writers Retreat all day long. The speakers are R.L. Syme and my writing spirit guide, Damon Suede. Oh, and BTW, I’m a finalist in the CRW Stiletto contest in the Romantic Suspense division. Pretty cool, huh?
