Tag Archives: Pay it forward

Happy Thanksgiving 2019!

As you spend time today with family and friends, please remember those who have neither. If you are blessed with a table filled with more food than everyone seated can finish, please remember those who go to bed hungry and wake up the same way everyday. As you bow your heads and give thanks for all you have, please think of those who have nothing – no roof over their heads, no warm clothes on their backs.

Thanksgiving it a day we should not only give thanks with our voices, but show with our actions and intention, so, why not volunteer at a homeless shelter or a community kitchen today?  Why not visit a nursing home and spend some time with people who are forgotten and lonely? If you see a cop or a fireman or a nurse working today, why not say Thank You to them for all they do and maybe treat them to a cup of coffee or a pie of pie? It may sound inconsequential and trite, but believe me, actions speak louder than words ever can and I’m a big believer in show not tell.

In my opinion, the best way to say “thanks” for all you have is to pay it forward.

Just sayin’…

Until next time ~ Peg

#HappyThanksgiving

I tend to think the actual message of Thanksgiving gets lost somewhere amongst all the tedious and never-ending travel, shopping, cooking, and planning for Black Friday shopping.

Or maybe that’s just me.

Thanksgiving, for me, is a day to reflect on my life. Where it’s going; where it’s been; how can I make it better. This year, as I have every year for the past 3 years, I’ve written a blog post for my writer friend Angela Hayes’ Thankful Authors blog.

Unlike in past years, though, this year I asked a question instead of writing about what I was thankful for. I’m reblogging the post here, and providing a link so you can read all the other blogs for the month on Angela’s website.

My question this year? Are you a blessing?

Blessings come in many shapes and take different forms for different people. Sometimes a blessing is a gift, given to you just when you need it the most. Other times, it can be the fact that someone was thinking about you and reached out, never knowing you were having a horrible day. Their out-of-the-blue connection helped you get through that tough time. A blessing can also be a notion that was put in your head that sparked into a full fledged idea, and then with a little elbow grease and good luck, blossomed into something that changed your life – or the lives of others.

However you define it, a blessing is always – ALWAYS – as Martha Stewart is fond of saying, A Good Thing.

I’m blessed in many ways.

I’m healthy. I have a wonderful and close family unit and structure. I have my faith that gets me though everything on a daily basis. I live in a country where I’m not imprisoned for having an opinion. I have a roof over my head, warm clothes in the winter, and more food on the table than I can ever eat. I get to do what I love for a living and I am supported by friends and family in whatever I try.

I never take those blessings for granted. Never.

Ever.

And I tend to think I am the exception to the norm, especially during the current time we live in. In the affluent community I reside in there are homeless citizens begging on the streets. There are children who are separated from their families and living in foster homes because of incarceration or drug addiction issues with their parents. There are elderly people who must choose between eating and paying their winter fuel bill. There are children who have no access to new, warm winter clothes. There are veterans suffering from PTSD without access to the help they need. There are families who have nowhere safe to live because of the economic ravishes brought about by job loss or illness.

Where are the blessings for these people? Where is their hope?

I know I’m lucky. Believe me, I know that there, but for the Grace of God, go I.

So what’s the point of this ramble you ask? If I’m so blessed, what am I droning on about?

Just this: if you are as blessed as I am, have you ever thought about being a blessing to someone else?

Maybe reaching out and volunteering to serve a meal or two at your local food shelter/pantry? Donating the clothes you haven’t worn since you bought them to a shelter for those who have nothing but what’s on their backs?

Have you ever thought of purchasing a few extra food items when you do your weekly grocery shopping and  then donating it to your church food pantry, or the local food bank?

Have you ever adopted a child or a family for Christmas and helped them with the cost of much needed winter wear or even the ability to give a few toys to the kids?

Have you ever thought what your life would be like without your blessings?

I have. I was one of those kids who didn’t have enough food at times when I was growing up. I didn’t have a new winter coat and had to wear one two sizes too small and missing some buttons. I had no winter boots to guard against the frigid, wet snow. And because I remember what that time was like, I honor the blessings I have now by giving back. By volunteering. By trying to make someone else’s life better.

Thanksgiving is a reflective time for most people. If it is for you and you realize how good you have it, maybe you’ll consider being someone’s angel this year.

Maybe you’ll decide to be a blessing to a person or family who needs one.

Believe me, the blessings you have are nothing compared to the ones you give to others.

Wishing you and your loved one the Happiest of Thanksgivings. May your tables be full, your heart overflowing, and your blessings be immeasurable.

#MFRW Top 5 things on my bucket list

Until the movie THE BUCKET LIST came out, I’d never heard this term before.

Once I knew what it meant I kinda ignored the term for about 10 years or so because I wasn’t ready to make a list of things to do before I die. I mean, come on. It’s not like I’m imminently north ( or south) bound. I don’t have one foot tipping over to the hereafter yet.

Yet is the definitive word in that previous sentence.

So, since I can dream about what I want to do someday, here are my top five thoughts on the bucket list in no real order of when or how I want to do them.

GO skydiving.

My daughter went a few years ago and said it is unlike any feeling or emotion you will ever have.

TUSCANY. I want to visit Tuscany for an extended stay and take cooking lessons from real, old world Italian chefs. My pasta making needs expert instruction!

Testify before the House Committee on Funding. These life-long bureaucrats need to hear from real people about why funding for Mental Health, Cancer research, and Education needs to be fully funded. I’m sick to death of my tax dollars going to pork spending. These guys need to hear from me in person!

Start a public service organization dedicated to PAYING IT FORWARD. I’ve been so blessed in my life; I think if a person can, they should pay that blessing forward in any way possible. We’re all in this together, folks. We need to boost each other up. I know I personally have stood on the shoulders of all the women who came before me who fought for reproductive rights, voting rights, mental health rights, employment rights. I want to be able to do the same for the next generation of women and the generations to come.

Plant a tree in all 50 states. I can see some eyebrows rising with this one, but it goes along with the paying it forward thought. Every day, millions of trees are cut down for various reasons. I understand most of those reasons, but if we cut down one, shouldn’t we replace it with another so the cycle can continue? If we continue to destroy our natural landscape without any kind of replenishment, the future will be a vast wasteland. I don’t know about you, but I want my great grandkids to be able to climb trees, take a walk in a forest, and breath in clean air!

So, those are my top bucket list items. Stop by the other authors in this blog hop to see what they’re planning on doing with the rest of their lives!

5 things on my #BucketList

Lovelovelove this challenge this week!!!

We all have (or should have) dreams, wishes, desires that we want to accomplish/do someday. Just like the movie it was named for, these dreams are called our Bucket list.

I will admit, mine was an empty list until 2 years ago. Up until then the only thing I wanted to do was make it through the day, upright, healthy, and fairly unscathed.

Then I got a book contract….and retired from the work force.

And then I allowed myself to dream about what I wanted for my future. I’ve narrowed it down to five because that’s all the blog post allowed for, hence the title!

In no real order, the top 5 things I have on my bucket list are:

Visit Hawaii – and not just visit – take a helicopter flight over the islands, swim under a waterfall, climb the Road to Hana

Visit the Great Barrier Reef before it erodes away.

Skydive with my daughter. She’s already done it so I figure, go with an expert!

Make the USA bestseller list – this one is a little farfetched, especially since I’ll need a runaway bestseller in a category that’s glutted ( contemporary romance) but hey! It’s a wish list, so why not?

Open a charitable foundation – the concept of to whom much is given, much is expected rings sosososos true to me. I have been blessed. Spiritually. Career-wise. Financially. I want, one day, to empower others the way I have been. By paying forward my blessings, I can accomplish this.

I can’t wait to see what some of the bucket list items for my fellow blog challengers are. Click on their links to find out:

Happy Thanksgiving from me to you

Thanksgiving means different things to different people. To me, it means being thankful and grateful I live in a country where I can try and make someone else’s life better. I wrote about this recently on Angela Haye’s THANKFUL AUTHORS blog. Pay it forward, in life and in Gratitude.
